"Google Wave" the future of communication?

TechCrunch and Twitter is buzzing about Google getting ready to launch "Google Wave"

From the Google Blog:

Here's how it works: In Google Wave you create a wave and add people to it. Everyone on your wave can use richly formatted text, photos, gadgets, and even feeds from other sources on the web. They can insert a reply or edit the wave directly. It's concurrent rich-text editing, where you see on your screen nearly instantly what your fellow collaborators are typing in your wave. That means Google Wave is just as well suited for quick messages as for persistent content -- it allows for both collaboration and communication. You can also use "playback" to rewind the wave and see how it evolved.
The first thing I thought of was NO SPAM!

It appears to be IM + eMail on steroids..which could translate into a drastic improvement in online communications and efficiency

It will be fun to play with and see what others come up with due to it being open source ..(new form of subscription content delivery?)

Official Google Blog: Went Walkabout. Brought back Google Wave.

It seems Google Wave will have inherently my value than Twitter. People actually talking to each other and conversing, rather than shouting at each other: "Look at me, look at me." No sign of Twitter's much predicted death - yet - but Google Wave will likely be another nail in the coffin.

It's hard to picture exactly from the description... but sounds cool. I'm looking forward to checking it out.

I think it has the potential to change the way we communicate on the web.

Here's the abridged version of the demo (10 min):

It looks to me like Google is just trying to find a way to horn in on some of Facebook's market share. Typical Google.

I mean just from watching the video, what is really revolutionary that leaps out at you?
    A Friends list?
    Instant messaging?
    Adding Photos?

Maybe I am just pessimistic but all I see here is Google doing what it does best: copying a smaller competitor with all of their might to squash it.

Obviously Facebook won't go away like most, but still.

    Anybody else see this?

I don't see any similarities or competition to Facebook. This allows a real-time, inline conversation among only the people you choose to participate. I can see using it personally as well as professionally for collaboration.
