You're probably better off just deleting those type of emails instead of opening them up and confirming that the email addy is a live one.

If your email program has a 'Mark as Phishing' option you could click that option as well.

Or, you could comply with the email instructions and let us know how that goes...

Sadly there seems to be a lot of people from that region who don't care one bit about morals and ethics. It's a reflection of the problems Africa deals with.

Let this be a reminder to IM'ers and all business people to keep their act straight and don't indulge in clever masked scams passed of as 'incredible offers'. You know what I am talking about guys.

Are you saying this is all a scam and I will not get part of the 10 million dollars the good Mr. Duvall (R.I.P), high ranking diplomat in Nigeria left in an account his poor widow can't access, but is happy to share with me if I give her my account number to transfer it all into... I thought with F.B.I approval that must be all above board now...oh, I better cancel the order for the Ferrari then!

Yeah, no kidding. My husband's close friend from L.A. has some sort of "techie" job as a civilian working for the US Navy or some such. He needed specialty clearance. What happens in these cases is that people the person knows and knew in their past are interviewed by the FBI. (I had this happen a couple times when my former employees got into the military.) Anyway, my husband was quite surprised to see a well dressed gentleman with FBI credentials at OUR door in podunk Washington State. And they didn't even know they could simply have EMAILED him!

Sadly people do - take a look here. Often the victims use English as a second language and/or are very poor and so either can't see what to us is obvious or want to believe the email is true.

Several months ago, Oprah had several guests who had fallen for scams.

One of the guests had been conned out of some big bucks by online scammers.

I think that if I had been duped by these people, I'd be too embarrassed to go on national TV and admit it.

A while ago there was a TV Documentary, I think on 60 Minutes (maybe only on our "down under" channel), about this retired Australian business man who had fallen for the Nigerian scam and paid about $100K to these people. The TV crew, with him in tow, went to Nigeria, found the scammers, handed them over to Nigerian Police etc. The unbelievable thing about it was that at the end of the program he still believed he would get "his share of the 10 Million" eventually!! Some people are just totally stu... ah, gullible and I am not sure whether to feel sorry for them or just laugh about it.

To be honest, when I saw the first of these emails some years ago, I actually did contemplate for a little while to respond. "Hmmmm - sounds too good to be true, but what if it is for real ... maybe it is difficult to get money released out of a Nigerian US Dollar account.. and I could do a lot of good with my share... and even order that Ferrari!"
In the end I decided that "If it sounds too good to be true - it probably is." and deleted the mail. So, I do have some sympathy for people who fall for it. I can even understand somebody making this first $2k "release fee" payment (not really, but..) but to hand over $100K and still believe it is real, I don't know, beats me.

I get these on a regular basis...apparently the FBI does not have access to a .gov domain, as they usually come from some ridiculous email address. (Of course after my
curiousity was satisfied the first time, I now mass delete).

In my life, as I am sure in many others here, every day wealthy people are dying without a friend or family in the world...you know how that happens all the time...and I am the only way to get the money from the hands of some corrupt government...

and now it so refreshing to see that the FBI and other relevant agencies (whose names we don't know LOL) is on the job to stop this fraud from happening.

The sad fact is if nobody fell for this crap, they would not keep sending these emails.

At this point in time, it is hard to really feel sorry for anyone who does.

Darwin would probably have an opinion on this.

I have to tell you. It is actually AGAINST THE LAW for the FBI to do something such as that! It amounts to misuse of public funds, and is OUTSIDE THEIR JURISDICTION! HECK, they are generally fined $500(at least according to federal law, last I knew) for using federal envelopes for something like this. It even says so on the envelopes! The FBIs purpose is to protect US citizens and the US from interstate fraud/crime and commerce FROM abroad that is contraband or dangerous, and to investigate such matters, and a few affilated things! THAT IS IT!!!!!! PERIOD!

They are NOT to assist foreign governments going after US citizens, etc....

BTW I had TWO REAL runins with the FBI! 1 was interviewing me PERSONALLY because I was used as a reference for someone that was applying for a job at JPL.(The FBI was doing a full background check for top secret clearance.)(The FBI has jurisdiction, because they are investigating the background to provide government clearance!) I ALSO got documents involved with their investigation of interstate fraud, and I was one of the victims.(The FBI has jurisdiction, because they were investigating interstate fraud!) OH YEAH, they have my fingerprints on file, because I registered as a securities dealer. The FBI has jurisdiction, because they are investigating the background of someone licensed by a federal agency, and facilitated investigations in the future!) They ALSO maintain some databases(such as fingerprints).

They NEVER contacted me via email, and email is NOT secure!

There is TOO MUCH wrong with that letter, but the FBI will NEVER communicate with you in such a matter unless you are a VICTIM, or a principle in such a matter, etc....(If Mr.Tunde Lemo were real he WOULD be contacted!) The FBI does NOT support or endorse foreign governments or businesses! They will only blackball them.

    BTW:

WOW! They should only talk to some people getting hired to do work FOR the US, some people working in/for the US, victims that are US citizens, and people associated with agencies that hurt US citizens! So they either think australians are stupid, or they are pretty stupid themselves!

Yeah, their jurisdiction is overblown. If the store across the street steals my money, or arrests me, the FBI has NO jurisdiction. If someone steals from THEM, it is local. Steal from other states, or a bank, or arrest a 12yo, or younger US citizen, illegally, and THEN it is an FBI matter. They couldn't care less about most local crime, ESPECIALLY if it is in other countries.

Actually, it's what you should do.

The government wants all this stuff, and they got a special email box set up for it:

        spam@uce.gov

Oh, and quit worrying about falsely getting accused. The origianal email it was sent from always tags along when your forward it. It's built into the header, so they know it really wasn't you.

I had a "friend" who fell for that crap a long time ago when they first came out. It was the old: transfer us $2,000 so that we can transfer you $100,000 scam. They got him for the $2k and then kept having problems and needing more money to get it going. He ended up losing (giving away) almost $10,000 before he realized it was scam.

In fact, until a few years ago, the FBI hardly used computers at all. Not until Louis Freeh left. He did not understand computers or the significance they play in modern times.

Good point. It's like direct mail, most non marketing people I talk to think everyone throws them away without opening ( i do) and if it didn't work think about it....they would not be any more direct mail advertisements---they work! Sucks that this is being used to scam others out of hard earned money...i guess enough people are getting scammed....
