Do You Want to succeed in Internet Marketing? You must be Different Take a lesson from this old Coot

Hi All,

If you want to be a success in Internet Marketing you would do well to take a lesson from an old Coot.

I call the Coot old because he/she has been around for a long long time.

You see the Coot is a bird that lives in Argentina, Bolivia and Chile.

At a certain time of year the Coots have a need for a nest so they can procreate Coot style.

Now you would think Mr. and Mrs. Coot would simply fly up into a tree and act like all the other birds and build their nest in a tree. Or maybe they could be like the ducks, chickens and Penguins and build their nest at any ol convenient place on or near the water/ground level.

Nope not the Coot. Just like successful Internet Marketers Mr. and Mrs. Coot just have to be different. They want to carve out a "special" place for their family and do so from the comfort of their "own space."

One day eons ago The Coots decided they just had to have an island home. Well, darn it all, there were no Islands anywhere to be found. Mrs. Coot looked at Mr. Coot and said, "Well what the heck, let's just build ourselves an Island."

It sounded like a great Idea to Mr. Coot so he picked up a pebble and carried it out into the water and dropped it. But who could build their nest on one pebble?

So he picked up another pebble and took it out and dropped it in the same place in the water.

He went back to shore and continued the process one pebble at a time until he had dropped 3,000 pounds of pebbles in the water.

BEHOLD, beautiful Coot Island!

This is a true story, The Horned Coot to this day builds it's islands in this manner.

So Internet Marketer, overnight success might come to some and get rich quick might be true for others. If you can do it more power to you.

In the mean time, take a lesson from the Old Coot and start doing something each day. Build your Island, one pebble at a time.

Excellent information and presented in a fantastic way. Kinda opens up the reality of IM and by doing at least 1 thing every day to help promote your online business will be well worth the time and effort.

Thanks for a great story! For putting in words how my attitude's changed in the last few days. From feeling a little desperate that this has got to work VERY SOON to just letting go and doing a bit more each day and building more for the long run.

    Very cool, George...

I just had to THANK you on this one because I
love being able to relate to something by using
    an analogy or story.

I have a little yellow sticky note on my calendar
that says, "One By One, You Get It Done". It was
a note I put up when starting my affiliate marketing
    business.

    Thanks for the post, George.

Thanks George, you are more than right. Not every one of us can succeed overnight. I have been here for over a year and I can not say I have succeed neither can I say I have failed.

Success Brian Tracy says ( and I agree) is a journey and I am willing to go all the way.

    Thanks man.

Really enjoyed the story George, thanks for sharing.

The 'expert' email marketers suggest weaving stories into your emails to use as analogies, this way your subscribers actually enjoy and look forward to reading your emails rather than feel you are directly trying to sell them something.

I do believe though that the ability to tell a story is something you are blessed with when you are born. Although it's a skill that can probably be developed to a certain level of averageness, (I'm referring to myself here on a good day!) it's a gift or talent that is inherently part of your genetic make-up and embedded in the marrow of your bones. For example people with the best singing voices are normally born with good singing voices, as the child develops it gradually becomes noticeable to the parent(s) that the child has a nice singing voice.

My father is a natural raconteur, my mother is quiet, thoughtful and analytical. If I could persuade the pair of them to work together and write my email marketing campaigns I'd be on to a winner. Alas, my father would find it extremely bothersome and insulting to limit the emails to less than 500 words, and my mother would be bemused as to why anyone in the world would be interested in her (or more to the point Dad's ) ramblings.

    Thanks for the inspiration George,

Guess I am an old Coot myself: my daily plan includes 4 new articles and link building. Only after those tasks I have the right to check forums, newsletters etc.

Hope my island to be finished before summer is over

    George,

The great thing about this post is that you can apply this story to any challenge you are undertaking.....I've been lazy about working out to lose weight and yet since yesterday when I first read your post I realized that I've got to work on it every day.....

I'm actually having fun with this as I made the committment to work out every day....Now every time I go work out, I draw a little pebble on my white board.

I've got 20 pounds to go and although it's a challenge....I'll be curious to see how many "pebbles" I'll accumulate once I hit my goal.

    Great, GREAT post!

      Hi Michael,

I'm with you on this. My way to lose a few is walking several times a week. Thanks for noting that this can apply to more things than IM.

That is some fine story telling. And what a lesson. Everyone is always looking for the magic/turn-key/instant solution to their problems. They waste all this time running around looking for the prefect get-rich quick scheme. Meanwhile the old Coot just goes about his business one pebble at a time. One article at a time. One blog post at a time. One product at a time. Before you know it the Coot is on his own private island while the get-rich quickers are still looking for the easy way.

  • I remember the transition from the mindset of "Instant Riches" to the "Pebble at a time" mindset. It was a rather sobering moment when I thought the "Big One" was going to work out beautifully, and I didn't know a thing at all about traffic generation.

When it flopped, I literally remember the blood draining out of my face, and asking myself, "Well, how are the other people doing it?" and then, I started researching, and learning that it really is simple, but certainly not easy.

Now, I can honestly say, totally worth it.
    Thanks for the growth reminder.
