How would YOU market this?

The following is a website that I started for fun.

During slow times at work, or bored times at home, I'd peruse the internet and read Wikipedia, and once in a while i'd read an interesting business fact. Such as "Google was offered to Excite.com in 1999 for only $750 thousand -- Excite turned it down. Google is now worth $365 BILLION".

I would post these little snippets of interesting facts on my personal facebook page, and I'd get TONS of likes from friends and family.

So I started www.BusinessFactoids.com - just as a way to share interesting business facts and history.

It's an interesting concept (only truly viewable on desktop - mobile wont work right now). But you click the "red button" and a new fact pops up every time you push it. I've caught myself wasting 20 minutes at a time just pressing the red button over and over.

Then I realized - why am I not trying to market this? So I put some banner ads on the side.

I tried StumbleUpon, but they refuse to advertise the website. Because they see it as 'thin content'. Nevermind the fact that it has HUNDREDS of page. They just all load on one page, via the red button. But anyway.

Anyone have any good ideas?

I like the push-button and quick facts, but you might want to build the site out a little more with some interesting articles.

And then have the push-button quick facts at the top of each post.

For instance, take each quick fact and expand on it in a blog post; even 10 or 15 posts would make it qualify to submit to StumbleUpon and other social media sites.

You can post a tweet about it on Twitter and share it on Facebook too.

Just tossing some ideas out there that came to mind.

    Good luck with it!

      Appreciate the ideas!

I did originally make each post a little longer, but it pushed the red button below the fold, and I worried some people may not figure out to scroll down to find it.

Every fact is auto-tweeted and facebooked!

I love the tips, I like what you did with the email list thing...

but the ads on the side... ehh, seems misplaced, now don't get me wrong, a ad isn't bad, but seems like its in the wrong spot! Try it underneath...

also why not turn this into a app? use a up front fee, or a ad!
    Hope this helps!

I agree that the ads seem dominating and out of place.

I just haven't figured out WHERE to put them that would look normal. I tried up top but it looks very odd under the banner. And below, it pushes the red push button down out of screen view. You're right though.

      Love the app idea.

I don't think the ads would look out of place on a full page though. But you might want to only put them on one side bar, maybe.

Neat little site and concept. First idea coming to mind was lose the ads as they are right now. In their place for generating revenue maybe try finding relevant products, affiliate opportunities, etc. but...

Take a factoid and spin it into a question. For instance, Did you know Apple has three times as much readily available cash as the U.S. Treasury? kind of unnerving huh? <Give Factoid> Then ask, would something like this help you increase your cash deposits?

That last question being a link to an appropriate offer, opportunity, etc.

I realize not every factoid can easily be matched with an offer, but I think you get the concept.

      That's a great idea.

And definitely something I should do.

However, my main question is - how should I go about driving traffic to this website? I apologize if the original post wasn't clear.

Driving traffic to this site is the same as generating traffic for almost any other site. You can share the blog posts, share the site to StumbleUpon, Tumblr, G+, etc.

I would also set up some automatic updates to Twitter via SocialOomph or Hootsuite. You can also post to Facebook groups that are relevant to your site's topics.

You can create videos around the topics and share those.

Those are just a few ideas; I'm sure more experienced marketers will have more ideas.

You could try Reddit advertising. If you find the right subreddit to advertise on, I think you will find some interested people.

You can only try and see how it goes.
I thinks it's an entertaining topic for some people.

The short, and frank, answer for traffic is to purchase all you need.
I imagine you can find one or two avenues to meet your need, once you decide your offering.

          Good Morning Doug,

Do you feel that purchased traffic would be a good fit for a website such as this? I thought about that avenue but wavered.

Not in it's present condition, no paid traffic at this point. However you are on to a neat idea and with some thought "Business Factoids" could be a nice go to hub for business people.

  • Create a free report/ebook/video etc.with 50 best money making facts/tips in it, then give it away to your prospects in exchange for their name email address.

Then create another report/ebook/video etc with 100 to 200 more detailed tips in there to sell to your prospects.

They will only click the red button so many times until they realise that 20 minutes have gone by and they cannot do anything useful with those facts until you can show them how to arrange it in an order that will help them make money, or pass an exam or some form of transformational process that you can sell to them..

I trust this all makes sense

Your lead magnet needs to be more specific so people will really want to get it.

Also, your Site confused me at first. You just keep having to hit that button to see more content ?

I think you should be more conventional with regular Pages on the site

Could you tell me more about what confused you?

Did you think pressing the button would bring another page?

I like this site a lot. Shouldn't need to go paid traffic with a nice hook like that. It's all good stuff. But what's been said above is true....bin the tacky adsense...and put targetted ads up....affiliate links, testimonials and your own products. I would imagine that in harvesting all the facts you may have seen some patterns emerge, could they be tailored into tips and advice. Sort of...hindsight messages and emails that can be put into an autoresponder sequence to really create value.
If I had the time and money, I'd buy the site of you....you have a great start in my opinion and not many people putting really original ideas together in this scene so props to you man.
