How to be James Bond: Viral Traffic and List Building 007-style?

I just saw this crazy method for building a list virally. I'd like to know if anyone has done it before and if it works? (I've been around the block a few times, but this one really blew my mind.)

Last night I watched this hilarious secret-agent spoof on youtube. It looked like a movie-trailer but it was a skit about IM (type in "goldenvault")!!! So naturally it made me curious I went to the guy's website. Here's what happened - let me know what you think:
  • Step 1: I signed up to access the inside (marketing secrets, bloopers, yada yada) but just got a message my access request will be reviewed.
  • Step 2: Earlier this morning I get the access-email and inside I find some cool info (video, blueprint, bla bla) BUT - and here's where it gets interesting - BUT I'm asked to "sponsor" two friends - which I did!
  • Step 3: The two sponsored friends got an invitation to check out the site.
  • Step 4: Now after the two sponsored friends signed up, they ALSO have to sponsor two friends!
So it's a viral method of building a list in the process of building a list! Anyone have seen this work?

Sounds like something similar to tell-a-friend, just positioned a little differently.

This is a common strategy these days..

"Tell a Friend" scripts are widely available and can help increase your list and sales faster.

It's very different from tell-a-friend and I may have not been clear about this.

In Step 2: You only get to access "the real stuff" aka "the inside" IF you sponsor two friends - otherwise you don't get access!

I've seen this at work. If it's not tell-a-friend, what would you search for when looking for a script like this?

So now I followed this for a while and found another guy (Gauher Chaudry) who did this recently in his launch. Anyways here's how the technique seems to work:

-Then 1st person HAS TO sponsor 2 friends to access the material ...
-Then 2 friends have to sponsor 4 friends to access the material ...
-Then 4 friends have to sponsor 8 friends to access the material ...
      ...
-After just 32 rounds 2 billion friends sponsor 4 billion friends to access the material ...

oh and the original video on youtube is here
Where can I get this script?
