Do classified ads in newspapers work for driving website traffic?

I used to invest in some classified newspaper ads to drive traffic to my online sites. Made some sales, just enough to break even. Anyone else tried this method?

Craigslist is free and better for local in my experience. Last time I tried newspaper ads was ..... I think 2002. And I was testing them against using bot to spam Yahoo Chatrooms. Bot won. And bot was cheaper.

Local print media classified ads MAY work if you do the following......

Announce a sale but they have to go online and enter a DISCOUNT CODE

Offer some digital premium which they can use to enjoy TANGIBLE (physical?) premiums

I agree with icoachu, doing local print media classified ads is not easy to track and by doing a discount count, you are sure that the sale you got came from the ad.

Don't do any paid ads unless you can track your results.

Yeah, offline advertising works if you are offering something 'irresistible'. But you seem to have done something good, since you made a few sales already.

I tried one with my local free newspaper a couple of years ago which goes through 30,000 letterboxes. Result, two enquires and zero sales

The area I live in the NE of England isn't probably the best, as it's an industrial area and there aren't many folk involved with internet marketing or working from home. When you tell folk what you do for a living, they have a puzzled look about them, as they're mindset is not progammed in that direction.

In addition to the above, if you incorporate a QR code into your advert (you might need to buy a small-ad rather than a classified ad) then readers with smartphones can access your offer right away.
