What is Infraction?

by Anup Mahajan 17 replies
Hello all,

I see a Infraction icon besides Warrior Profiles in the forum posts.

Any idea, what does it do?

Cheers,
Anup

It's a way of informing admin that someone is breaking the rules.
Clicking it takes you to a menu which gives you a list of infractions.

My best guess is it's the opposite of the reputation button. So it's a karmic voting system to determine who's got the real stuff in here. One builds up, the other takes away.

Hmmm, I wonder how that differs from the report a post button.

I guess we can try all permutations and combinations when we come across a spammer...

An infraction is easy...it's breaking the rules. My guess is this is a step to the self moderated board that has been being discussed.

Infractions do NOT appear to be the counterpart to reputation.

When you click Reputation you can approve or disapprove, and the
reputation info in the FAQ indicates there are positive and negative reputation.

I clicked the Infraction button on someone (but did not submit it) and saw the following screen:

              Infractions (Active / Total) 0 / 0 Points 0 Warnings 1 Infraction Level Title Points Expires Warning Inappropriate Language 1 10 Day(s) Insulted Other Member(s) 1 10 Day(s) Signature Rule Violation 1 10 Day(s) Spammed Advertisements 10 Never
This means that if it's an infraction, you are reporting the message, and it counts up points toward ??? Most infractions it appears wear off after a time, but SPAMMING is a PERMANENT 10 points.

              Good to know!

One of them will reveal your identity as the referrer to the recipient of the infraction. In my opinion it is not a real good idea to use that option as I reported someone for doing something once and got a barrage of hostile email from the person I reported as the mods deleted his account, and he was pissed at me because I was the one that reported him.

I found it funny that the person couldn't take responsibility for breaking the rules. But then isn't everything someone else fault?

Yeah, I really don't understand why people do it... so let's stop posting here and it will return to the 1739576th page.

I don't understand why some people are so concerned when someone does it.

                Hi Black Hat Cat,

What makes you think people are 'so concerned'?

And why does it bother you so much (see I can antagonistically exaggerate too) that some people want to help others out that you need to post about your confusion?

I guess if you only write snarky one-liners and have never taken the time to write a detailed helpful answer you wouldn't know the disappointment that comes from realising that the person you're trying to help gave up IM three years ago.

well if nothing else, maybe it will help users realize they can use the infraction button still? I'm new to the forums and didn't even know it was there lol. If it still helps lighten the moderators load then it serves a purpose. but yeah, it was pretty random for this to get a reply. She must of been using the 'search' feature and found it...as her post describes to do for finding information about infractions haha. At least she practices what she preaches =)

Sometimes a spammer bumps old threads, then people answer it. Then the mods delete the spammer, but the rest stays. So, quite often the person who looks like they bumped it, actually didn't.

I've noticed that a lot lately Roger.
I really can't understand the reason for that.
If the whole thread isn't going to be "cleaned up" they might as well
leave the bumpers post there too.
At least the members will know who the real troll is.

          Hi Les,

I can only speculate. Are you still a mod?

I presumed that a busy mod nuked the spammer not knowing the thread was an old one - maybe someone reported it with the message 'spam' or perhaps they deleted all of the posts made by a person without even viewing the thread or something.

I've seen it a few times in the morning (UK time) - the spammers seem to be trying to find sweet spots where there are less mods or something - and they presumeably do a search for their keyword, then reply with drivel to 20 threads. You arrive at the forum and see one name running all the way down the right side of the page!
