Adobe Photoshop cs2 - Now Free

I know photoshop is one of the tools that I use on a daily basis. Whether its creating banner ads, wso's, or images for my site it is a must have for the IM industry.

I ran across this article on Yahoo that states Adobe is offering Photoshop CS2 as a free download so I thought I would share.

Here is the link for more details:

This is a really smart move by Adobe. They already offer their software very cheap or even free for universities, plus they have the cloud version starting at $9.99, so they are probably going to be the only real digital design software. At least they will dominate the global market. Let's just hope they keep innovating.

Not a big loss, back years ago, CS2 was good for its time, but there are a lot of other alternatives out there now. So dont feel too bad.

I'm not one to argue with Forbes magazine but in fact I downloaded it and used it for free for a couple years until I formatted that PC. I hadn't previously used Photoshop and had no license. So at one point it was available.

The clarification, apparently came after the fact that it was initially released by Adobe on their website and product keys offered.

That may not have been their intent (as clarified later) but in effect they were giving it away for free and on the initial download there was no indication it was only for previous users or anything like that.

Whatever Forbes once was, today its fairly low quality content.

Just recently I read them misquote people by attributing what they said to Ghandi. Writer actually wrote this entire few thousand word essay about how clueless Ghandi is, based on three lines by some author somebody on Facebook misattributed.

Forbes DOES NOT have it wrong... ADOBE CS2 IS NOT FREE! You need to have purchased CS2 to download the product and the serials legally.

    From the CS2 download page:

"If you purchased a CS2 product and are having activation issues, you can download replacement media from this page.

Read before you download a CS2 product:

Adobe has disabled the activation server for CS2 products, including Acrobat 7, because of a technical issue. These products were released more than seven years ago and do not run on many modern operating systems; Adobe no longer supports them.

Adobe strongly advises against running unsupported and outdated software. Only customers who legitimately purchased CS2 or Acrobat 7 and need to maintain their current use of these products may use the serial numbers provided during the download.

If you purchased a CS2 product and are having activation issues, you can download replacement media from this page."
Adobe has deactivated the licensing server but you still need to have made a legit licensed CS2 purchase to use the serials provided otherwise you are pirating the the software. See the screenshot from the download page that I quoted above.

    Adobe scientist Dov Isaacs:

On behalf of Adobe Systems Incorporated …

You have heard wrong! Adobe is absolutely not providing free copies of CS2!

What is true is that Adobe is terminating the activation servers for CS2 and that for existing licensed users of CS2 who need to reinstall their software, copies of CS2 that don’t require activation but do require valid serial numbers are available. (Special serial numbers are provided on the page for each product download.) See <http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1114930>.
Anyone that is still offering CS2 downloads to unlicensed users has it wrong. Yes, tons of sites got it wrong, and many today do not read the details on the download page prior to checking the "I Accept" box.

Not to mention the fact that the setups that it was designed to run on were the oldies, and making the program run and/or run smoothly on modern stuff stuff might be a stretch for many.

    Mac OS X v.10.2.8–v.10.3.8, PowerPC® G4 or G5 processor
    Microsoft® Windows® 2000/Windows XP, Intel® Pentium® III or 4 processor
Yes, I too remember when this was first announced a couple of years ago, and it's my understanding that Adobe never intended to give it away as freeware. Supposedly what happened was many licensed customers were having trouble with activations on reinstalls after Adobe deactivated the CS2 licensing servers (you figure), so Adobe went this route and published the serials for existing customers. I think a bunch did download it in the beginning, and then Adobe had to clarify that it was only offering the product and serials to licensed users.

    Cheers

When Adobe originally offered PS Cs2, they failed to clearly state things. Thats Adobe mistake. Not mistake of poor folks who are reduced to using Cs2. Forbes still sucks.

And Adobe would have got far better publicity if they did just give away Cs2 for free. Not like most people not in 3rd world would use it anyway. Adobe gave me free licenses for several Cs3's when Cs3 was newest product, then again with Cs4's, as part of promotion to sell it to students. They give away thousands of copies each year in order to dominate market. Its next to free to students and educators.

Today, 2015, while I use CC because its a tax writeoff, I am fairly certain that free options which are competing with CC edition are superior choice to Cs2, whether you obtained CS2 for free or not.

I'd suggest people who are seriously sad that Cs2 is not free look at Gimp instead, which came a long way since days when average Adobe user was using Cs2.

Gimp, 100% free, no nonsense: GIMP - Downloads

Freaking out over Adobes copyrights is like freaking out over Windows being pirated. If it wasnt, people would use Linux instead, Microsoft would not be making even close to money they are making by controlling #1 OS on planet.

Piracy is not always a bad thing, if you know how to use it to your advantage. Plenty of us pirate some of our own products, which are pirated anyway by others, to promote and sell our other products which might otherwise not get any publicity.
