What do you feel is the difference between a silo structure and proper navigation structure?

Just very briefly, a silo to me is done mostly for the search engines so they understand the flow of your topics and relatedness to each other. The navigation bar I consider more of an element to ease navigation for your readers.

If you are thinking either or, I'd have both and I would design a very clear nav bar.

The problem I have with the silo structure is that it is too tempting for people who use such structures to stuff their site with CRAP.

You're better off using a MINDGRAPH of your average target user and addressing their NEEDS and PREFERENCES.

I don't think you understand silos because the whole point of a silo is logical site navigation (relevancy).

Look at the Amazon left sidebar, it's dynamic depending on which category you're currently browsing. Example, it doesn't make sense to have chainsaws in the left sidebar while browsing the toy category.

Now look at a typical blog, complete chaos with internal links.

Yeah I learned more about and got it clear. It can be a stupid subject.

      Excellent summary.

A silo is a style of navigation, not a replacement for navigation.
