keywords or business name-offline business

What do you suggest for a domain name for the offline business websites.

Do you go with keyword type domain names like: (my city yard mowing.com)
or
do you use: bobsyardmowing.com?

Most business love to use their own name in the domain name which would suggest using the second one.
But for seo etc. the first would probably work better.

Do you get both domain names and maybe park it or redirect?

What do ya'll normally do?

    Glenn, I don't have any hard data to offer, but I did a lot of research before setting up some local sites on blogs. A lot of SEO types in that field are saying that the actual domain name isn't as important as the title tag.

    So either domain name should be OK.

    The title tag would read something like:

    Bob's Yard Mowing | City Name Yard Mowing Pro

    or

    City Name Yard Mowing by Bob's Yard Mowing

    Both get the city name in the title and the major keyword (yard mowing) twice without obviously stuffing.

    You could even go for a hybrid domain name like CityNameYardMowingByBobs.com

    Not a definitive answer by any means, but at least some food for thought...

      while local seo is much easier, it is something I try to study some. It is always nice to hear from folks who have been there and done that too.

        If your domain name exactly matches a keyword phrase your chances of getting ranked # 1 on Google for that phrase are MUCH higher.

        Of course for many businesses you'll also want to register their business name as a www. com too.

        For example www. JimsMowing.com

        But if you want to be # 1 on Google for "mowing services Austin" then if you have the domain name www. mowingservicesAustin.com your chances of eventually (or immediately) going to number 1 for that search term are much higher.

        Domain names matter because Google knows that if someone registers a domain name they're at least somewhat serious about that specific topic.

        Put another way if it's a competition between these two pages and all the other factors are equal:

        www. JimsMowing.com/mowingservicesAustin.html or
        www. MowingServicesAustin.com

        My experience is the second page is going to be the one listed higher on Google.

        Not only that but the second page will often rank higher than pages with better back links and higher Google page rank.

        Google likes domain names that match keyword phrases.
