I remember back in the day "Blackhat" referred to SEO, in the sense that you were either Whitehat (publishing good content, building links slowly or naturally) or "Blackhat" (spamming websites for quick backlinks, ranking terms extremely fast but risk getting banned).

It now seems that the term Blackhat is synonymous with "illegal" and "unethical". I think this gives the word blackhat a bad name (irony huh?). Blackhat now refers to anything that could be deemed "unethical" even borderline illegal. That's not what the original term blackhat was used for, sure some of the back-link building technique that blackhat SEO experts used were frowned upon, but I don't think you could have risked jail time for it.

Now you see things like CPA fraud being listed as "blackhat" when in fact it's not blackhat, it's down-right illegal.

Am I wrong in feeling that blackhat/whitehat evolved in meaning or is what I'm saying have some truth in it?

My farting has stayed about the same as it has for years, I don't see any particular evolution. My wife claims it has gotten significantly worse over time, but I'm pleased with it.

Black hat is nothing more than a buzzword to sell ebooks now. If you create a forbidden fruit that people think gives them an unfair advantage, they'll want to buy. Real black hatting had nothing to do with IM originally, it was all about hacking and security.

I agree it's not the same as "illegal". In IM it really just means doing something that violates your partner's TOS---which COULD be legal or even ethical.

    BH pertains to TOS
    ethical ~ fairness
    illegal ~ the law

It was eating goobers that gave me bluefarts in the first place. Now I'm on a strict goober free diet to try to minimize my bluefarting.

The probƖem when you venture into the bƖackhat arena is the sƖippery sƖope of accepting a 'cheat to win' mentaƖity. "BƖackhat" but ƖegaƖ Ɩeads quickƖy into a grey area of ƖegaƖ but unethicaƖ, thence to the iƖƖegaƖ as weƖƖ as unethicaƖ. It's heaƖthiest to resoƖve you can pƖay by the ruƖes and stiƖƖ win.

But what color would it be? And what if there is only one person on the elevator?

You know that warning about a colorless oderless gas? Well, that warning would only be half true.

And if there is only one person on the elevator, everybody still knows who did it.

And if they're wearing blue jeans...well, you do the math.

The trick to this is to be the first to accuse the other. It puts them on the defensive. You have to stand your ground when you do.

        Thanks,

I just returned to this forum after being away for some time, and suddenly I am seeing terms such as BlueFart and Goober, and I was wondering what the heck was going on.

It seems that language, like technology, has continued to evolve to the point where I feel like a nerd. Or is that geek? Loser? What do we call people like me now?

Maybe it's a lesson that I should not stay away so long, or I'll just get left behind?

So, does anybody have a good free FFA ad submitter I can borrow?

Success is an endless series of falling down and getting back up again. Sometimes, you fall a little less. Sometimes, you fall a little more. Keep getting back up. Keep moving forward.
