Beginning an Internet Marketing Career

Hi there, I'm not sure if this has been posted before but whilst I was searching on these forums I couldn't find anything specific that I needed so I thought I'd just ask.

Basically I am completely new to the world of internet marketing but I really do want to give it a go and after finding this forum would like to make use of the expertise available here.

Would anyone be able to advise of where to start in learning about internet marketing?
Any relevant/top picks of books to read and study with?
Any other hint, tips or guides?

Would really be nice if there was a sort of sticky with a guide for the newbies and with a bit more help to navigate the WF.

Anyway, bit about myself, currently working full time, with a Top Rated eBay store (through sheer luck more so I believe). 24 year old, Degree graduate with plans of doing a Masters MA later next year. A bit of a workaholic at the moment and just want to kick start a business career so willing to put in the hard grafting.

Any advice would be very well appeciated. Thanks.

    Yadz...

Getting started doesn't have to be difficult. I can only post an overview here since I sell info products that cover this specific topic (wouldn't be fair to those who bought my guides).
    • Choose a social-friendly niche
    • Register a "brandable domain"
    • Setup a nice-looking website (hire someone if you cannot)
    • Setup a matching Facebook page
    • Ensure all branding is consistent
    • Fill your website with articles, videos, etc about your niche
    • Share your content on your Facebook page
    • Once our website and facebook page have lots of content, launch a Facebook "like" campaign.
    • If done right, you can build an initial facebook fan base for under $200 easily (maybe even $100) - depends on the chosen niche
    • Once you have your fan base, continue posting content to your website and sharing it on your facebook page
    • TRAFFIC TO YOUR WEBSITE WILL BEGIN BUILDING IMMEDIATELY

After a month or so of building this relationship with your fans, you can begin monetizing by throwing in a product promotion now and again (Amazon, clickbank, etc - anything that matches your niche).

There you have it, in a nutshell.

I follow this plan for every brand that I build. I currently run a youth soccer website that generates 1000 visits per day with under 2000 facebook fans (very localized). I monetize in several ways.

    You can do the same....

PM me if you'd like assistance setting this up.

      Thanks wolfmmiii,

Have you ever bought an existing domain at auction which had high PR, over 10 years old, lots of quality backlinks, etc. and then repurposed it with your own content in a different niche?

I'm wondering how much time I'll save gaining "authority" by doing this as opposed to starting a fresh domain.

I don't worry about PR and SEO because if I'm relying on SEO, I'm targeting low-competition products with my Amazon review sites and they rank with simple on-page SEO, even if they are brand new domains. However, when I build a brand (like my soccer site), I rely on social media so no SEO required.

Yes Wolfmmiii has it right and I would add to that ...build it over time and enjoy doing it ...treat it like building a home or a car, piece by piece. It can be overwhelming at first to try and figure it all out so be realistic and give yourself time ....most people bomb out too soon. Think of it like planting a seed, and then you will need water and sunlight. You will need to nurture it ...over time it will grow and become more.....getting good support and making a plan to apply yourself, anything then is achievable...Jennifer and your list is everything!!!! List building is your audience, your customers.

I will also add this extremely simple idea....

Be consistent in everything that you do. That to me is a major piece of the puzzle that is left out. Even if you have have a small amount of time to build your business make sure you are there everyday.

      Hope That Helps

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I'd go through the free content provider to begin with. I understand I'll need to learn more about SEO and have several books to go through with these in mind.

    Any suggested books/courses though?

These ideas/tips are good, but don't really know where to even start on this or what to actually research to begin with

Building an online business really takes a lot of time and dedication. If you want to learn internet marketing that would be huge. It is a very wide topic. It covers a lot of things so if you are looking for a definite way to get started without suffering from information overload, I suggest you select from any of the three below and stick to one:

      1. Affiliate Marketing (Selling Other Peoples' products online)
      2. Selling Your Own Products Online
      3. Selling Advertising Space

        Hi There,
Most of these guys are correct, especially Wolfmii. The really time consuming part is the building of traffic. Post relevant articles to your site everyday and share them on Facebook. Do not overdo it. Join relevant facebook groups as well and be active. But above all, use your online common sense!

When you use social media instead of SEO, you can literally build hundreds-to-thousands of visitors per day in under a month.

I don't know what to tell you man.

It seem like there are tons of people who are attempting to learn IM by compiling as much free info as possible. Some of these individuals can graduate to buying info products that will help them learn even more.

I have heard before that the majority of people in my target market (that will buy from me) are people who want to be more knowledgeable.

Some people are here not to make money but just because they like learning stuff and get this...they like to buy as well.

So OP, I don't know where you fit into all of this.

I got into this industry when I was 34 because I was a burned out Truck Driver. I was already making good enough money for my lifestyle back then that supported a wife, two kids, 3 bedroom detached, 2 car garage with 2 cars.

    On my own.

But I came to the Internet (10) years ago looking for another way to make money that would give me more time.

So what I would tell you to do and what I did are (2) completely different things.

I found something I liked and just got started out of sheer enthusiasm, made a ton of mistakes, struggled for a long time and somehow it all started working and now I am here today writing this post from my home office (AKA bed room)....without having to rely on my trucking job anymore.

What most people want to hear is...

Research, stay safe, get all your info, be consistent and bla bla bla.

Just follow your own intuition man (and just do something, anything).

There'll be some work to do, but I think you're up to it. I can't add much beyond some of the great advice you've already been given here.

This is all really useful information. Will take a look into all that has been suggested and forward to starting my IM career.

What appears to be the 'easiest' or most user friendly for users would be affiliate marketing to begin with and just registered for affilorama.I have my own products in my store and will be expanding on my own site, but think it's best to seperate the two aims for now and get as many boats out as I can.

    I'd say...

    Start a website.
    Put good content on it.
Make a instagram account for it.
Get 1000 real followers by following other people in that niche and likeing their pics. Also don't forget to post new content on it.
Set your website as your instagram bio.
    Monetize your site.
Also don't forget to collect the traffic to e-mail signups!

If you have any questions, let me know. I'd be glad to help out

Is there any way you can model what the
company you you are working for is doing?

That seems like a good start. you are already
in seeing the inner workings of the company.

I am not saying screw them over but rather
model their successful model and get some
    success for yourself

Personally, I'd say learn how to create your own product so you can build a real buyers list. Google and Youtube are pretty good. Launch it and see what happens. You'll make mistakes but you'll learn and the next one will be better.

Simple, approach it the same way you'd approach a college course.

      Step 1. Do an overview,
Step 2. Create a study plan.
      Step 3. Learn the basics.
      Step 4. Master the fundamentals.
Step 5. Find your niche or specialty.
Step 6. Master (pardon the pun) your niche or specialty.

affilorama this is a great resource to start and learn the basic's you can also learn list building here as well you will here any good internet marketer say the money is in the list and it is true instead of paying for advertising once you can market to your list over and over again and gain repeat business.

Sorry but I think you are getting the cart way before the horse.

So you got some suggestions to join Affilorama and you did that already? You don't mention anything in your first post about affiliate marketing. Is that even what you want to do or where your strengths are?

There are so many, many ways to make money online. Before you start looking for books, tips and guides you need to decide the type of business you want to start. You have a top ebay store so you may want to think about marrying it with an ecommerce store or Fullilment by Amazon (FBA).

Before you listen to any advice about "marketing" do some research and decide what business model you want to concentrate on because it will make all the difference in "how" you will be marketing.

You have the smarts and the work ethics to choose from dozens of business models, you do not have to pick affiliate marketing.
