Advisable to build websitename.com/keywordhere??

OK so I am looking to target some keywords for a service industry in various cities.. and I've read that it is recommended to use your keywords in an exact domain name if possible.. so here is my theoretical question:

If I'm looking to target the gardening industry for example, and say my keyword phrase of interest in seattle is "garden supplies seattle"...

Would it do me just as good regarding SEO if I were to have gardensupplies.com/seattle OR gardensuppliesseattle.com ?? Would both be equal since the keywords are the same? Does anyone know? Ty in advance

The only problem I see with doing it that way is that "/seattle" by itself may not pass on-page SEO because that page or post's keyword would simply be "seattle," and it's too broad.

Yes, it helps to separate the target cities but you might want to make that particular page/post name more than just the city name.

I read somewhere (don't remember where right now) that it might be better to purchase the domains of multiple cities; i.e., seattlegardensupplies.com, dallasgardensupplies.com, etc. and then build the blogs/sites out with information about the different supplies.

      For example: seattlegardensupplies.com/the-best-mulch-for-gardening

      or /the-right-tools-for-gardening

You get the idea. You can use similar blog content across the sites by changing the words and titles of the posts a little bit from site to site.

For example: /the-right-tools-for-gardening on one blog and /the-best-gardening-tools on another blog, etc.

Personally, I think that may be the best way to go about it as far as on-page SEO and site-wide SEO.

At least, that's how I'd do it. Just an opinion.
