Question about buying a premium domain

Hey folks- quick question.

I was looking at buying a premium domain that's listed for $2,000 on the major registration sites (GoDaddy, HostGator, etc.). I was wondering though; who does this $2,000 ultimately go to? Is it owned by someone else and that's their asking price? I've never quite understood how that worked.

Anyway, do I pay the 2k or is there a way to get it cheaper? I plan on researching it tonight anyway but I figured that I could get the answer just as fast here.

    Most likely it belongs to someone who is listing it on the aftermarket sites, and the money you pay will go to them, minus a small listing fee.

    Probably the only way to get it cheaper is the old-fashioned way - negotiation. That is common in domaining, so they will probably be receptive to a good faith attempt to haggle.

      I don't think the listing fee is so small these days on a lot of these sites. Heck GoDaddy is now charging ~20% of the total price on a smaller sale like that.

    Always negotiate because if they're selling then they want to get rid of it, so negotiate as much as possible. 2k isn't cheap for a domain so I hope it's a good domain name or a domain name that you actually want.

    When negotiating I usually never let the seller know I'm really interested in the domain name, and I try to find flaws such as no page rank, no backlinks, age of domain and so on. Try to get it to the price that you want to purchase it for or as low as possible.

      Thanks everyone for the advice...I'll try to track down who owns it and begin the process. It's a one-word domain (with an "s" on the end) that's perfect for a social media site I'm working on getting built. So I'm really not worried about the domain age and the links in place; the premium .com alone is all I'm really after.

      And honestly, I thought the same thing....it's dumb to pay $2k when I can just make a unique name that's easy to remember. I'm not coming up with anything solid though and I need to get something in place fairly quick.

        $2K is a lot of money when $1.99 can get you a great name in any niche.

        Try Lean Domain Search or Impossibility - they will give you lots of good dot com possibilities.

          That is completely 100% awesome....thanks a ton for the links. I'm still playing with Lean one but you're right, there is a lot out there that I wouldn't have thought of. Now I'm re-thinking everything; I've always used GoDaddy or Fatcow for hours on end checking possibilities and looking at suggestions.

          Honestly, I feel kind of stupid now. But thanks for it anyway!

    You can find contact info, via who-is search or put the domain name in Google to get more information and know where it is listed on different market places, forums etc....
