1 niche at a time?

I am wondering if I should focus on 1 niche at a time.
Spend 8 to 10 hours building up 1 website

or
have many difference niches and divide them in to 8 - 10 hours.

I m thinking 5 different niches a day because "you do not want to put all your eggs in one basket" ?

    Yes, definitely put all of your eggs in one basket to start, and don't stop until-

    1) You're ready to give up on the idea completely.
    2) The site is fully optimized and doing well

    You'll be much more successful if you focus on one thing at a time. After your first site is on auto-pilot though, then go ahead and build a second one in the same niche or something completely different. That's your call.

    Its good that you are thinking to diversify but, to be frank, concentrate on 1 niche right now. Try to build some good traffic before you start working on your next website. it becomes really difficult to manage websites. Remember, you can earn a lot of money from one single site as well. But, if you can manage up to 3 sites effectively then go for it. You will need to constantly work on every site that you build. Just creating and forgetting won't get you any money.

    If you have a team to assist you them you can simultaneously work on many different niches. Only applicable if you have adequate resources.

    The thing with the eggs and the basket doesn't apply in all cases. It's better to focus on 1 niche at a time, otherwise you risk building 5 different websites, that are 'weak', instead of 1 strong website you can actually benefit from.

    The whole eggs in a basket thing is often spouted out here but a lot of people don't understand what it means. This isn't just a problem with internet marketers, but any business owner.

    People think they have to diversify immediately.... but the companies that successfully diversify, do so long after they have dominated their market.

    If you try to diversify too early, then your time is scattered, focus is scattered, and your results won't be very good at all.

    While I agree with those that say get one going and doing well before you move on, I would also throw this scenario in to consider.

    Many people here suggest that newbie and even more experienced folks offer services to get started online.

    What if you took that advice and were writing articles or setting up websites for local businesses in order to feed your family? Would you only work on one dentist's website until it was super successful and not take on or consider any other business opportunities or would you work with the dentist, the family doctor, the CPA, the life coach, the plumber, and the hardware store together in a logical, systematized way?

    Unnecessarily jumping around normally causes all kinds of problems as some of the other posters have mentioned.

    But in some cases it makes sense, it seems to me, to be working on 2 or 3 or 5 projects at the same time. If we do that, though, we've got to be careful that all the projects don't suffer because of this decision. That's hard for a lot of people to pull off.

      Mark you make a good point, but it's an entirely different scenario. A writer would of course want to expand their writing business by working with different clients. A web designer would expand their web design business by working with additional clients.

      The issue here is when that writer, or that web designer decide they want to branch out way before they're ready by offering something unrelated like, Reputation Management services.

    You should only start with one. The reason is because your first site helps you to establish a baseline for you to know what you're doing right and what you need to work on. After you get that one up and running and making money, then you can think about a second niche site and beyond.

    Interesting question that generated some awesome answers. In addition to what has been suggested already, I'd like to recommend you look for a mentor. There are mentors in every niche. They charge fees but whatever you pay will be peanuts compared to what you could make by following their advice.

    Don't spread yourself too thin and don't try to be a jack of all trade and master of none.

    Some people may venture into more than 5 niches at a time and come out profitable but others can't.

    From your question, I can smell newbie and wreckage if you try to go more than one.
    Besides, even the one don't have a guarantee from you.

    Not sure what you do in 5 niches. Niche sites with adsense or amazon affiliate review sites?

    When I started i personally did 3 sites at a time. Main reason for this is to beat the monotonous. I dont want to one niche for 8 hrs at time ( you feel bored soon and stop doing it)

    Also it spread the risk of success. 1 or two may take off of other fails and helps in spreading promotions etc

    By the way I did Amazon reviews sites for physical products

    If you build one website a year, you you're happy, and you're customers are happy, it's all right.

    Depends a lot on the particular niche/s. Some niche, the most popular, can take an awful lot of time and effort in order to build. They can also take a significant amount of time and effort to maintain.

    If you are going into one of the big, popular, niche then my advice would be concentrate on one (or two)... if you are heading for less popular, or sub-niche, then it may be possible to manage 5 or 6 at same time.

    Strongly advise you do not try to manage more than this.

    I would go for 1 website at a time approach. Just try to rank and get good traffic for your main money site and once you are bored then sell in on flippa and go for another. If you like to go multiple niche websites then try to maintain your focus on 1 niche website that you think have most potential. All other website should setup as automation. In this way you can get more income for your main website and less income but on automated way on other small niche websites.

    IMO, when starting out. The less things you can focus on the better, for example - when starting out, i recommend sticking with 1 traffic source, 1 niche, etc.. once you learn how to make money with that traffic source, niche, etc, then start to diversify.

    I agree it's important to not have all the eggs in 1 basket, but at the same time, it's very important to stay focused and not jump around.

    When you build your first niche website, you want to make sure that you are making money with it first. Don't build the site and that's it. You can build 5-10 of them in a few days but there is a chance that you will not get any results from any of them.

    So work on one, tweak it here and there, and once you start to get traffic and sales, then build more.

      Building a niche web site, in and of itself, is really not a money-making activity. You can build all the sites you want . . . and at the end of the day, or week, or month all you have is a bunch of web sites but no money in your account.

      Marketing is what turns the faucet on!

      So IMO, those who have said don't move on until you finish your niche site only have it partially right.

      Build your website, get your marketing campaigns in place, get the traffic coming in, build your list in the niche, and get your income into your bank account at the level you desire . . . then think about expanding.

        It really depends upon your personality type. I started back in 1998 and built a whole bunch of sites. By the early 2000's... I came to the conclusion that these sites weren't serious players in their niches. So I went back to the drawing board. Over time, I came to look at building websites like building software products.

        You have version 1.0 to start with. Then, if it catches on, you move to version 2.0. If it doesn't catch on... you take a serious look at it and figure out why. Maybe the sales copy is weak. Maybe the design looks dated. So, you give it another shot. All this time, the domain's get older and (in my case) more established in the eyes of Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.

        If nothing works on a domain by version 3.0, you sell it on Flippa. For me, the turnaround time is about five years. If you can't make money with the site, you make it in the middle or at the end. I've built 200+ sites since the 90's, so I'm answering this question based upon my own personal experience. That said, I enjoy the whole process and it doesn't seem like "work" to me - most of the time.

    Ideal way is to not only focus on one niche at a time but to also focus on one method applied to that niche till you get results from that niche.

    Results mean either revenue or subscribers started generating. Better if you get both.

    However, if you are expert in one niche and are comfortable with other niche then you may start working in both the niches. Don't go beyond that unless you are doing well with either or both of the niches.

    However, follow one method at a time principle applied to both the niches you work in. Do not hop from one method to another until you find that a particular method is not worth trying for that niche. Otherwise you will lose focus and you may get deflected just when you are about to see the results with little more efforts.

    It is important to diversify with methods in a same niche rather than working with different niches simultaneously.

    What is your goal here?

    Building lots of sites fast and with little time invested is a viable strategy for certain types of business. For other businesses having just one site is the optimal strategy.

    So, the first thing to do is go back to your business plan (You do have a written business plan, don't you?) and look at your goals and consider your current position.

    To be honest with you the question you ask would pretty much answer itself by reference to your business plan.

    If you don't have a written business plan then before doing anything else sit down and spend some time in planning your business.

      I perfer to work in one niche and once I build a list of reasonable size I move on to the other.
      It all depends how good are you in getting out of your comfort zone.

        There are more than enough aspects to consider with one niche. Stuff the other four niches on the 'to do' list and focus on one job and complete development and tweaking of that first.

        The target landmarks will be the completion of each niche site - and being able to see progress. This will hopefully keep enthusiasm up to move forward.

    Thanks again, Yes I do have a business plan. I am working on 1 niche at a time. I want to get a feel on this and keep daily diary of my mistake and what work and what didn't work. That way I can go back and review those on the next project.

    Yes one niche at a time. try doing 5 websites a day, its much harder than you think unless you're paying for everything to be done and all you do is post articles.

    in this sense, I guess you can do 1 niche every 3 days. That allows you to set everything up (creative and management) all you would have to do is wait for your content to arrive.

    If you have a business plan then you are already ahead of most people -and most people fail to build the online business about which they fantasised.

    Take what you learn and apply it, discard the bad and keep the good.
    Record as much as you can on a spreadsheet - track activities, time taken, money spent, results from the activities and over time you will build a picture of what is, for you, best practice.

    Overarching most of this though is deciding what your business is. Does the world need yet another copycat affiliate marketer? What can you do to add value for your chosen market sub-niche?

    Chances are that you will need to build quite a few sites, it is like fishing. But an expert fisherman learns to maximise his return from each rod, even though to the outside spectator he just has some sticks with threads dangling in the water.

    I pick a market and niche that I know people are spending money in and I just focus on that one niche and work with different products that I find useful that can benefit that marketplace. Take the time to do this part and really only suggest very good products and you know what? They buy when you do!

    Biggest thing is the type of traffic you are sending. Who are you sending anotherwords. Again take the time to know your ideal prospects demographics and ask yourself where online are these people hanging out. Try and keep your marketing very targeted or places and people that are narrowed down to really wanting a need for your services.

    Don't make the mistake that Iv been doing, trying to take on too many sites at one time. Pick one. Take action. After you're making enough money and getting enough traffic, move on to another project.
