Is a domain name required for the main Hostgator reseller account?

Hi Folks

I'm currently on their Baby plan and am planning to upgrade to their Reseller plan. For the main reseller site, do I need to have a domain name for it? I'm not planning on reselling hosting but need to manage my 20+ and growing addon accounts as separate cpanel accounts (already surpassing the infamous inode max for the 20+ combined site)

Thanks in advance
Norman

You have to enter a domain when ordering a reseller account, but it doesn't have to be used or registered. Just don't use a generic one like test.com or Google.com.

Yes, the account will be set up using one of your domain names...doesn't matter which one as you are not planning to resell hosting or to have your reseller acct "branded" in your name so you can sell hosting.

It doesn't affect the other domains used on that reseller acct - just connects the acct to a domain name.

If I'm understanding correctly then yes, you would need to have a domain linked to it.. Why wouldn't you want this?

I don't want to pay for a Domain name just to have it as an anchor to the Main Reseller site. From what I see from the replies, I can use one of my existing domain names for this. If I do, can I still have that site in it's own cpanel? Or do I need to keep it as as an addon domiain in the main site?

Sorry for all the newb questions on the reseller plan.

      Thx

Yes, the only reason there's a requirement for a domain is because a "reseller" account is just like a normal cPanel account but had privileges to "own" other accounts. There's a parent account that is assigned reseller permissions to control the accounts under your plan. The permissions are based on the owner or system "user" not so much the domain, but you have to have some sort of domain in order to have a user account - the domain does not need to be registered, but having a registered domain would be a good idea. The reason for this is because if you create an account with a bogus domain, then someone actually buys that domain & tries to sign up with it (they own), the hosting company will most likely force you to agree to change the domain name since you don't own it.

To add, there's also settings on WHM servers that won't allow an account to be created for non-registered domains.

Lol, ironically, I also recently had a Hostgator baby plan before I switched to the reseller plan.

You do need a domain name registered/tied to the reseller plan.

Well, you have your answer to your question. And you don't need to sell anything to anyone, I don't think Hostgator cares much about what you do with your reseller plan, as long as you pay them their fees.
