Does a .co domain worth registering?

I am looking for registering a domain name. But .com/.net extensions has already been occupied. Only .co is still free in this row , so will it be worthy? The niche I am going to target is very low competitive. Will it be too hard to rank that site with .co domain?

It will be no more difficult to rank than any other domain.

What are you planning on doing with the domain? I almost always try to get a .com, but I don't see why a .co would be much different than .net, .org, etc

The domain extension won't influence your website's rankings or visibility in search engines, if you have your mind set on that particular domain name, then get it. You should be able to have the same results with it as you would have with the .com.

.co will influence your rankings and visibility in different countries.

Just make sure you set up international targeting in google webmaster tools for the country you want to rank in and you will be fine.

Personally I don't like the .co extension. Because if users type your URL in to the browser, they will probably add an "m" to the end out of habit due to .coms. Also, how many times do you see these types of domains on page 1 results? Not many, that's for sure, so I'm sure they don't rank as easily.

.com is the best by far, followed by .net and .org... I would get the .com if possible and if not, get the .net or .org..

On a technical level it makes no difference. However, some people have preconceived notions on the reputability of different extensions. For example, in school for research projects we were told .org are more reputable. Obviously, this isn't the case, but just goes to shows the amount of disinformation out there.

Yes Google will treat a .co as a generic TLD.
A .co will work just as well as a .com, .net or .org.

Take a look at what Matt Cutts from Google has to say about .co and ranking them in
          this video

Having said that, I always go for the .com whenever I can. Most Internet users consider the .com to be the most trustworthy.

          Hope this helps!

You are going to want to register a .com domain name.

The nice thing about picking up a new name is that if it is not available in .com, is that you can always change little things in the name itself.

For example, if you are trying to get a name like dogtraining.com and it is not available, you can try something like:

(I'll use my user ID for this)

    talfigheldogtraining,com

So you can use your first name or first and last name then DOGTRAINING.com

What are you using the domain for ? You could use a subdomain to get a desired name with another .com extension - eg - mydesireddomainname.generic.com - this way you can find a generic.com domain name and subdomain to it with the name you're interested in. As Robert mentions above, the extension names are treated the same -albeit .co, .com, .net or .org. I use this approach to form URL's for landing pages with .biz domainnames and save a little in the process. Just a thought....

I always look for a .com extension mainly because it sounds better. The .com extension is also more natural for people to type IF they want to manually search for it.

Use this well-known synonym site to find the right words for your domain name if some are taken already.

I've not seen a .co domain rank for any keywords I've targeted. I always try to find a .com domain, mainly because there are still a lot of people who don't know that other extensions exist.

So, if you want repeat visitors who remember your domain name, go for .com domains. You won't need EMDs anymore. Just buy a domain that lets people know what your website is about. I'm sure you'll find a .com available if you find a letter or 2 to the name you've chosen.
