What is your best advice for building a website following?

About 5 weeks ago I started my newest website(local travel/adventure site) that shows ALOT of interest. The problem is I know absolutely nothing about what types of marketing works and I'm a little stretched for money at the moment.

On my own I have built my website up to 250k hits and 425 FB fans from posting my articles on my websites Facebook page. Other than that I have done no other marketing and don't know where to start.

My goals:
100k FB fans
First page of google(i know that takes time and SEO optimization)
1 million hits a month

I know this is possible because a website similar to mine(smaller area) has 300k fans and has already accomplished the goals I have.

Do you guys have any suggestions on what has worked for you in the past?

Find where your target audience is hanging out and approach them there.

Use high quality, viral content mixed with good keyword research and high quality backlinks.

Youtube is a great place to start. If you haven't already I would suggest creating and uploading some videos...

You got 250k hits in 5 weeks and you're asking for advice?

Now, don't get me wrong, I think it's hysterical that someone else ignored the rules and advertised his "how to get 1,300 visitors" eBook when you're at a quarter of a million, but I can't really understand your question if you're getting that much traffic so quickly. There are two possible answers-

    1) Turn off the robots and focus on real traffic.
    2) Just keep doing what you're doing.

A quarter million views in 5 weeks is legendary though with no paid ads.

I guess I just see the feeds on Facebook for articles like CollegeHumour, Diply, Buzzed etc and feel like that's how my articles are supposed to behave. Obviously not that big(mine is a much smaller regional demographic), but other local related websites are still doing exceptionally well in this niche.

99% of my visitors came from Facebook, they aren't robots. I have been tracking my unique visitors, time spent on website and average page views per customer and have ruled that out.

I just figured if I got some advice on how to actually market I could see some better results. I know that my content is really good, I just have no idea how to spread it intentionally.

I have read online about asking other related websites to post my articles on their blogs/networks but I haven't had luck with that.... I have no idea how to build quality backlinks(they say they are important but i haven't figured out exactly what I am supposed to be doing), and I know I have another 5 months until I can expect to see traffic from search engines. The internet is a great place to learn about all these awesome marketing ideas, but not so great on how to implement them. It is incredibly confusing.

That's not true...great content ranks very quickly, especially when you're getting that kind of click-through rate from social media. So either your friends really love you or something unnatural is happening, but just keep doing what you're doing.

As far as the backlinks, start writing on true authority sites within your niche. Their standards will be very high but you're saying that you can meet that standard, so use that to your advantage. Don't link to your site in the article though, just the bio link is fine. Also, drop a few press releases advertising your site, get listed on directories and review sites, and just keep plugging away. You should also probably start reaching out to journalists and offer to be a source or pitch story ideas and offer to help write it....even local newspapers and tv stations can bring major followers.

Again though, you're doing everything right...so just keep doing that.

Did you started to promote that blog on your page? I had one travel blog and seen in other travel blogs too as they have very low fan base pages.
1 million likes is only have to buy from FB, but still you have to spend money.

Every article I write on my website gets shared to my websites Facebook page. The whole reason I created the page was so that my followers would be able to see my latest articles in their feed and continue to come back to my website. I have started sharing related content, posting quotes, etc as well to keep the following growing and engaged. But some articles do well, others only a couple hundred hits.

Do you guys think a flyer campaign would help get the word out about my website?(a month or two down the road)
I know the target demographics and where to post them... but do you think it would actually yield results or be a waste of time and money?
