Hi Warriors,

I am planning to make Lyrics website where I'll concentrate on Indian Music and Movie Industry, but before going ahead I have couple of question.

- Is it legal to make such site, coz I see couple of them already.
- I just have knowledge of wordpress and I tried setting up a demo lyrics site, but for every song of an album I got to make a new post in wordpress.
Is thr a way by which I can post all song lyrics under one album without making new post or I need to use a different script all together.

Best Regards

  • Yes, It's legal.

It's probably best to use different post for each song.

And use categories and tags for albums etc

With your requirement you don't need special plugin or extension. Just need to use post and category default of wordpress is good enough.

Maybe you should have a browse through the information on the Indian government website below before you go any further:

      Copyright Office

Song lyrics are subject to copyright laws in many countries and from a quick look at this website it would seem that India is no exception. Better to check the position with regard to possible copyright infringement before spending time and money building a website.

Yes, you see free song lyrics web sites all over the place.

Are the songs copyrighted? Yes, at least in the U.S., all creative work (books, music, art, etc) is automatically copyrighted to the creator.

Could you be sued for copyright infringement? Yes

Come on . . . will it really happen? Probably not.

Are the copyright laws different in countries outside the U.S.? Most likely but you should check for specific laws where you are.

Is the material copyrighted? If so, it is likely illegal to use it without permission.

  • Sorry Selfdisiplineacademy, and sorry Steve B,

But entering this game of music, lyrics, etc, requires little bit more than just slapping up a site without having the proper licensing in place.

As with everything else online, there are folks who create a site, and think it's ok, because "there are others that do it to"

In the case of a lyric site, you "will" get shut down once you draw enough attention.

I believe it was only last year that the National Music Publishers Association sent take down notices to over 300 unlicensed lyrics sites.

From those sites, they were able to legally license about just over 30 of them.

This required agreements and paperwork in order with the right music industry entities.

For the most part, unlicensed sites that may still be up, which there shouldn't be too many,
are pretty much flying under the radar. And that's no way to run a biz. What's the point.
You'll just be hoping it doesn't become popular.

Culturally Chinese view plagiarism as a compliment rather than theft. So brands and product designs as well as music, media and software have been regularly copied.

    Hope the world understand's this.

I read somewhere online that google is planning to integrate this with search in a similar way that when you google a famous personality or location it provides some facts on the first page. Always good to do your research first if it covers songs in your loc.

What if I change a word in the lyrics or replace one word with another. Still that is going to come under copyright act.

Here's a crazy idea for you - How about you create your own original content instead of stealing other people's?

That's what I am doing by replacing the words and if the music labels are so freaky about their lyrics then why don't they make their own lyrics website.

No you are stealing other people's hard work. Replacing a couple of words doesn't change that.

For your second question - They can do what they want because they own the copyright. You don't. Deal with it.
