Be Careful of Twitter

Head's up for all you Twitter fans out there.

If you have several Twitter accounts make sure you don't cross Tweet between them or your accounts will get suspended.

It doesn't matter if all your Tweets are legit, Twitter doesn't approve of this.

    Good advise!
And....all those programs that can "automatically add 1000's of followers, etc.) are NOT a good idea either! Don't get suckered into giving your hard earned money to people offering this scammy service!!!

I set up a Twitter account for my sister's business and frequently "impersonate" her because she's not very good at social media. I've been using a proxy for her account though, just in case they don't like the posts from the same IP address.

how does one do that proxy thing?

I keep reading about people doing that and up till now I thought it was somehow black hat or cheating or might get you devalued or sent to the 'supplemental' purgatory.

      Seconded.

Never heard of that term either. Do you mean retweet between user accounts while on the same IP? My wife, tenant, and I have been doing that for some time (when we're all on the same IP) and we haven't been banned, but if this is what you're talking about I'll surely stop it quick enough.

OP, Can you elaborate a bit more? What's your source?

I can only support this statement: BE CAREFUL OF TWITTER. My account was suspended last night due to "strange activity". I logged a support ticket with Twitter, which was closed as "resolved" by the support staff shortly after - no explanation, nothing and my account is still suspended. I reopened the ticket by adding to it and asking for an explanation, as I believe I followed the TOS completely: I was not using any automatic follower generating software, my follower/following ratio was balanced, I don't believe I spammed, at least not compared to 80% of people I was following, I interacted & retweeted and I only used the free version of Twitrobot, which only allows you 10 automatic messages spread 1 hour appart, of which I only had about four links to my products - hardly spamming!? I have now noticed that not only has Twitter still not responded to my query or given any reason for suspending my account, they now have also whiped all my followers/people I was following - and my account is still suspended. I had only started about 2 weeks ago with Twitter and only had about 340 followers, so not a big loss yet, although very disappointing, frustrating and nerve recking. Anybody out there wanting to make Twitter a keystone of their Internet Marketing business model should think twice. Twitter might be the rage of the day, but with the kind of heavy handed and unresponsive approach I have encountered from Twitter - your business could be over in the blink of an eye!

              Thanks, Renegade Warrior.

First I thought I would NEVER touch Twitter again, as I really felt frustrated about the way they treat their customers. I know it is a free service and one has to abide by the rules, which I thought I had, but a) the rules are not clearly defined and b) they are not communicating with you, which is probably the most frustrating aspect of it. Anyway, I have cooled down now and will wait for my account to be released and have another go in 6 days or so.

Twitter is intended for social tweeting so it's possible your automatic tweets trying to sell a product did the trick. Personally, I don't think getting rid of marketers where ever possible on a social network is heavy handed. I think it's smart. Allow it and you'll soon have a network that is completely useless for the original intended purpose.

Look at Craigs list. About the only thing a legitimate seller can try to sell on Craigslist without getting flagged is sex. Myspace - who's real and who is just a marketer ... hard to tell.

Use it to network and develop relationships and your business could benefit. Use it to auto-broadcast a sales pitch and it's probably going to be adios to you.

              Hi,

thanks for your contribution. The issue I have with Twitter and what I do find heavy handed is a) they are absolutely vague in their TOS what is and what is not allowed and b) there is absolutly no communication once they have suspended your account (at least not in my case). If your hosting account, for example, was blocked or suspended and the hosting company would just not communicate with you for days, you would be concerned too, wouldn't you?

But I absolutely agree with you: if all you get on Twitter is reams and reams of automated product promotions, interspersed with a few funny or uplifting quotes for good measure, what's the point?

So, yes, using Twitrobot, even the free version (which only allows you to send out 10 messages, all 1 hour apart) was a bad choice and I would never use it again. The thing is, as a newbie, once you get onto Twitter you get bombarded with messages of "use this program and get 1000 new followers a day" do this do that etc. and even Twitter itself promotes some of these automated programs! So you think (or at least I did) this is the way it works and from my very short experience on Twitter I would say at least 90% of Twitter users use these automatic applications - and not just the free version I did, but the professional/paid versions, which allow you to send an automatic tweet every two minutes.

Still, to suspend people's accounts without communicating with them is rude and bullying and I don't like to associate with bullies.

              Cheers,
              Peter

The difference is that you pay for the hosting, so they should provide an explanation, and I imagine they do. A social network that is free does not owe you that courtesy. In fact, I've had Digg accounts and Stumble Upon accounts banned and never received the courtesy of an explanation, so Twitter is right in line with what most major social networks do. As for the TOS being vague, what is vague about "You must not create or submit unwanted email to any Twitter members ("Spam") or We reserve the right, in accordance with any applicable laws, to refuse service to anyone for any reason at any time.?

I use an automatic friend adder, but that's as far as my automation goes, and I use it sparingly ... I never send out automatic tweets. When you think about what Twitter is intended for, you can see how automatic tweets can pretty much ALL be lumped together in the SPAM bin. Twitter was meant for spontaneous messages, and to give friends and families a heads up on what's going on with you. How would one automate that? You wouldn't.

I've seen a couple of my friends use Twitter for networking with other like-minded business people and it works out well for them. Let's say my friend is a designer and many of his followers are also. He has a new site and he simply tweets ONCE that he has a new site and it gets noticed by people who are in the market, since that's who his followers are. Twitter is not going to ban him over that, but if he started to broadcast his sites every hour, continually, he'd be gone in no time.

But Twitter is just a very small part of what your online marketing should be. Use it to create relationships and network and you might create some very important relationships and get your name and reputation out. But I doubt seriously that Twitter used alone will ever be a very effective marketing tool, even if used correctly. There's just too much chatter to really get noticed on it. That's why the best communications on Twitter might just be the direct messages you send to those you have developed personal relationships with. Just my opinion, of course.

              You know, Suzanne Bucciarelli

I really took your criticism seriously and even agree with you to a large extend. But then I clicked on your link, which got me to your site http://domainingdiva.com/ and then I clicked on "Follow me on Twitter", which took me to your Twitter profile "Suzanne Bucciarelli (DomainingDiva) on Twitter" and then I read through your last 100 or so Tweets and under that light I find your comments rather insincere - there was not one personal tweet, retweet or anything "social" amongst it. Following your own advice, maybe you should be one of "the marketers they should get rid of - if they are smart".

Yeah, I have tweet deck with multiple accounts set up and sometimes forget that both tabs are clicked...needless to say I end up posting the same post on both...

:/ yeah, I'm definitely not into Twitter as I always feel like I'm talking to myself anyways...even when I'm @ people...they just never respond...

And agreed with dude up top...takes to much time to have it lost in a blindside move from Twitter...

so ... is cross tweeting when you post the same tweet on more than one account? I have two accounts, unintentionally, and they are both starting to grow nicely. Both are my name in variation. I would really hate to lose either one.

I tried to find an explanation or definition of cross tweeting on google but didn't seem to find anything that was relevant. In fact, this very thread is already on the first page for this term.

I have definitely "cross tweeted" on several occassions. Hehe..oops!

I have to say though that if my twitter account were to be suspended, I don't think I'd really care that much. I've tried to have two way conversations and 99.99% of the time I just end up talking to myself.

I think, and I may be wrong here, that twitter is fast becoming a useless link farm. This is not to say that there isn't people out there making some money from it.

I once asked a guy who tweeted a question concerning linkedin how many people out of his forty thousand followers responded and after a few days replied back: "1. You".

I quit TwitRobot because they changed from unlimited messages that I could tweet on automatic from every hour to every minute and now the free account you only get 10 messages randomly tweeted every hour. I also noticed that what they said about their tweets interspersed with yours were happening more often than they said they would.
I quit TwitterAdder because of all the spammy messages they tweeted through my account after they got me only about 20 followers. I changed my password to get rid of them.
I did all my following manually from Twello and Twitter follower. I never got multiple accounts because it seemed the spammy types were doing that and I didn't want to cause attention to myself.
Like everything else in this game of IM I've come to realize - for me anyways - that slow and steady wins the race. It's when I try to force something is when I get into trouble.

This would be my guess on cross-tweeting: basically the same thing as cross posting on newgroups and forums. It's tweeting the exact same message on a number of different accounts.

A cross tweet is when you send the same tweet between accounts.

So let's say you have 3 businesses. You can't send the same tweet between all 3 accounts or you will get flagged, even if those tweets are legit and promote your businesses the right way.

So each account needs to have their own tweets.

    Hope that helps!

I have a question for everyone. I was excited about Tweet adder and got the service because they said it will automatically post messages throughout the day, so I loaded about 4 tweets spread 30-60 minutes apart which I thought they would send about 1 every 30 mins.

When I got home 10 hrs later all my preloaded tweets were gone and it said only 2 tweets were sent.

Does anyone know why that happened?

    Thanks!

Before seeing this post I guessed they removed the suspended pages. When I looked at my rank in my state, I see the person ahead of me at 15 dropped 1,480 overnight.

If you get suspended by Twitter, it's for a minimum of a week with no exceptions.

You can apply for reninstatement after the 1 week.

Your best bet just like everyone's been saying is:

Don't use automated tweet programs, and if you do, don't request a ton of people a day and don't send a bunch of tweets.

Also, Make sure every tweet is unique.

So you can have multiple accounts, but make sure they are all quality.

Start off slow with doing all these steps, then work your way up.

I learned this all the hard way. Trust Me!

But Twitter is rumored to be the next Google, so we need to have love for them as marketer's.

You can get alot of traction from Twitter if you do the right steps.

    Good Luck!

Let me clear up what I mean about a cross Tweet.

Let's say I was in Amway/Quixtar/Artistry and I had 3 separate Twitter accounts promoting all 3.

Let's say my Tweet was something like:

Artistry has the best cosmetics in the world.

Twitter doesn't want you taking this tweet and posting this exact tweet to all 3 accounts even though they are a part of each other.

Each tweet needs to be separate to each account. It's kind of silly since all 3 businesses are intertwined, but if you do this, they will ban your account.

    Best advice:

Go slow on the followers, if you do automatic tweets make them very far and few between and make sure you don't have duplicate tweets between accounts.

Also, since each twitter account needs a separate email account, you can get additional free accounts through Gmail

Sorry Guys! Twitter is really cracking down.

Here's another curveball for all you Twitter fans.

It's your preference but I highly recommend AGAINST linking your Twitter profile to Facebook, Myspace, Blogs etc. if you are sending out multiple tweets at a time. It will flood your blogs and social network sites with tweets and really make people upset at you.

If you send occasional tweets and they are content, then you should be fine.

Ping FM is a site that will ping your social networks together but be very careful linking your sites if you don't want alot of tweets going to them.

But Twitter is rumored to be the next Google, so we need to have love for them as marketer's.
Joke of the year, or just a rumour?

      Jeff.

The real value is the relationship you have/build with your followers...not how many people are following you.

You can have 100,000 followers and make next to nothing or have a few hundred and make a thousands a month...all depending on the relationship you have with them.

The thing is with twitter is as little automation as possible is the best way to go about it. I hate all these programs that will follow thousands for you at any one time its bad news and thats not what twitter is about.

If you use it responsibly you wont have any problems its like ebay. When the ebay craze was going on people had lots of ebay accounts and used to bid on their own items and leave themselves feedback. Then they complained when they were suspended its the exact same thing.

I have two twitter accounts and the second is what i use when im showing people how to set up a twitter account or for one on one twitter coaching but theyve never interacted with one another.

just keep it simple on twitter and you will NEVER be suspended.

    kind regards

    Here's my guess is:

It's the automated posting software that will get you suspended.

Spamming will also get you suspended, but where that fine line is I do not know. Basically avoid re-sending the same message from the same twitter account. I get plenty of the same messages from the same people over and over. It's getting quite annoying. Willie Crawford does this with automated software and I know his account got suspended for a while, but I am not sure if that was the reason for it. By the way, even with these automated messages with the same posts, follow Willie anyway, he has had some great tweets when he is actively tweeting.

Cross-tweeting as it is being defined should not be a problem. The only way i could see it is if you go over the line and start spamming your tweets. The safer way to cross tweet is to re-tweet messages (RT). This is a basic usage of Twitter.

Multiple accounts is not a problem, but I would suppose there is a certain number of accounts that Twitter will allow before banning. I can see 100's or 1000's of Twitter accounts all originating form the same IP would raise some red flags.

Doesn't anyone think its about all the promotions going on lately about using twitter for promotion, I would think they are very aware of these promotions, so if you start following the latest craze from the guru of the day and they spot it, they are going to start suspending accounts

they are not stupid or random about it

I get thousands of dollars of press release writing business from Twitter every month, so I am in the "Twitter is great for business!" camp.

However there are things about Twitter that are less then perfect from a marketing standpoint - the main one being that, since they are a free service, they don't have the kind of customer support that paid services do. So if something goes wrong, and all of your business relies on Twitter, you can't call them up and get the problem fixed right away. If 1shoppingcart goes down, I can call them. I can't do that with Twitter.

Just another reason why you should diversify and have multiple streams of income.

Interesting thread here. Thanks to everyone who shared their thoughts. I like the personal touch and treating people as individuals as much as possible. Just recently I exceeded 1000 followers and I've got some solid relationships building.

There are a lot of spammers on twitter, I agree. People are too busy to build relationship with twitter followers, that's why they use automated software to get followers and send out automated tweets. But this will not be a good practice.
Since I am very new in internet marketing, even now I don't think I am somebody. However, Twitter did help to change me from "nobody" to "somebody". I make a lot of friends from Twitter. I can share what I've learned in my life such as good quotes or readings with my followers and they really appreciate me and RT for me, and this really help me to spread my name to thousands of Twitter users! At least, soon or sooner they will know who is Elvin Tiong and what he is doing.
Don't promote your stuff too often, it's really annoying. Don't treat your followers with the ways you don't like to. Promote your business two to three times a day is ok I think, depends on your relationship with your followers.
Treat your followers as your friends and they will like you. It's almost similar as building relationship with your email list I think. Warm up your followers with good sharing before doing any promotion.

    Just share my two cents.

Twitter is a good place to learn stuff and have fun. It's not so great (in fact it's awful) for churing out IM bucks.

Unless, of course, you run a buesiness teaching people how to get a lot of followers.

Reread sbucciarel and Dana_W posts above. I know that like myself, they are seasoned Twitter pros. Twitter can work well for service businesses where what you are selling is yourself, your talent. I've had some good business for my website design and promotion but that was only after I earned the trust of a few of my followers.

Try to sell an eBook or any other info product. Like sbucciarel said, Twitter would be just one small part of your marketing plan.

I think "cross tweet" is when you pretend to communicate with someone else to create a disturbance or to elicit attention from the masses, but it is really with yourself.

You know, like some people do here on WF.

Some great advice especially as i am new to twitter. I have a number of sites in different niches and the plan is to have maybe four or five twitter accounts. I am going to grow followers slowly and try to tweet informative or funny tweets three or four times a day until i get a decent following. I see this as a potential for some extra free traffic for very little effort and as such i will only be posting a link maybe two or three times a week. That's the plan and i will post some updates as we go along.
Any other tips and advice always appreciated.

I might have missed something here but...... Why would you want to tweet from one of your own twitter accounts to another? What's the point of creating a twitter account that follows your own twitter account?

I can see why Twitter might think this was a dodgy thing.

Yes Twitter are very strict when it comes to multiple accounts, all your hard work can be undone in a second, and they will never renegade on reinstating your account/s no matter what you say
