1-Tip for Newbies Trying to Wrap Their Head Around IM

My one tip is to not to spend any money for a year and take that time to study how other people are making money.

Until you can write down on paper step by step and you clearly understand the model of the publishers system you should not spend any money.

Here is how you can learn and clearly understand publishers models and systems behind how they make money.

Go to different websites and do the following:

Click on ads you see around the internet and save the copies (headline, image, description, sub headlines) as pictures or on a piece of paper

Then write down these things in answer form on a piece of paper.

1) What ad units and where do they come from.
2) How much do those sources pay on average per CPM/CPC
3) Where is the traffic coming from and how?
4) What things did the publisher your studying do different than a similar publisher you've studied.
5) Ask yourself, can I duplicate what they are doing using a different niche.

You can use websites like similarweb.com to see where traffic comes from and where it goes when it leaves. I advise you to go to every one of those URLs and learn about what those companies are and how they are being used at the website/publisher your researching.

Study what other people are doing in a scientific manner. Ask yourself questions and find rational solid answers and write things down, you can throw them away after your done, but write them down.

This is a very technical industry. You have to look at it in orderly steps. Bring your throughts back to pen and paper and follow these tips.

Yes I am impressed with the research steps mentioned above. IM can be confusing, complex and down right deceptive. Spending a good amount of time just learning and reseaching will help in the long run.

I expect that many newbies are over anxious to make things happen, jump into things too quickly and get burned. I know that this happened to me when I started out.

Remember - the "shiney objects" are NOT your friends!

If everyone could/would do that then there would be no stopping them. Unfortunately I think that is too much time and work for most newbies. I have been there too. When you start with the wrong mindset is hard to change it to where it needs to be. Thanks for the post though. It is a good way of looking at it all.

I also agree, it is too much time and work for most newbies. A lot of newbies want to start making money immediately, with minimal time and effort. At least it seems that way.

And if you do all this and the sites you are looking at and researching are not converting those ads, because you can never know if they are or are not. Then What?

Al, you lovable curmudgeon. You nailed it on the head. Heck, even if a site RANKS WELL, that fact says squat about ROI.

      It's all about ROI.

You have to look at it like this al.

If you consistently see a website being advertised or showing up in your feed. You can intuitively know that they must be making money. Nothing is 100% that's why some people figure it out by taking risks after asking questions and some people just wonder and never take action.

It's business al and it comes down to you in the end and how you look at things.
