Is there money to be made in this?

I'm still experimenting niches and what works best for me so I wanted to ask what you guys think about marketing, "Custom Decals", or Custom Vinyl Stickers.

I have the entire set up at my house to create custom "die cut" stickers, not digital stickers. I'm running about 5-6 years of experience with my machine and it has been an excellent source of side income. All local sales only pretty much. Iv had about 4-5 successful sales on Fiverr with custom stickers so I thought maybe with the right marketing or campaigns, I could make some serious income.

A lot of websites offer custom decals, but they have minimum orders of 50-100. What if I offered the service for NO minimum orders? It doesn't cost me anything extra besides just a few minutes maybe. Not $ wise. The materials for creating decals are very cheap, as low as $20 a roll of 10 yards of vinyl. 5 stickers makes my money back on a roll.

I tried researching keywords and competition with the Market Samurai software. When I google custom decals, I don't see any ads on the right hand side. Is that a bad thing if nobody is paying ads?

Should I try and test Facebook campaigns?

I normally make around $200-$300 a month from local word of mouth business. Just from my Facebook like page and friends.

Any feedback is appreciated.

    I would absolutely do a test ad on FB. You can target only your local market to begin with and then expand.

    You can get soooo targeted with FB ads it is ridiculous. I would try the college crowd, t shirt lovers, cat lovers, skaters for custom decals. I know cat lovers sounds weird in that list but they buy everything kitty related!! Showcase a few awesome designs and you should be set.

    Do it right and you really should have more orders than you can possibly fill!!

      I have boosted a post before on my business page and I received thousands of impressions. Instead of targeting my customers friends, what group interests should I try and target?

      Any examples of interest pages that I should try and add?

    Hello fellow Floridian! (I grew up in Ft. Lauderdale myself)

    Honestly, I think that you could be making a killing online...but I also think you have to step outside the box a little bit and see the bigger picture. Give me more information since I don't know what "die cut" is compared to digital....what makes you better? And how big can you go? I'm asking to see if you could make a FatHead for my wall or a full endorsement for an 18-wheeler...or anything in between.

    What I'm getting at here is to look at a company like Threadless....they do the same thing you do in essence. Only they specialize in T-Shirts and they created a frenzied following by becoming the cool kids on the block in a very tough industry. So the way I see it, you're not a decal business....you're a customization expert. But you have to show your customers the canvas first to get their inspirations going.

    Now excuse me if you already do that...it's been a busy day and I didn't visit your website yet. I do think that you can scale nicely though if you start finding niches within what you already do and push the heck out of them. Here are just a few random ideas off the top of my head-

    - A running "submit your best graphic contest" to quickly gain followers. Let followers vote on the best submissions and you give a free print to the winner each week. This will explode your brand!

    - Custom graphics for bicycles
    - Custom holiday/seasonal window decorations
    - High school logos for student vehicles and staff
    - Custom mailbox skins
    - Custom video game console skins
    - Custom laptop skins, school notebooks, tablets, etc.

    Again, you just have to inspire folks to envision these things to get them to become customers. Hopefully that helps.

    Well my goal is to eventually make enough money to upgrade to a digital printed machine. Digital decals I can print pictures in color and turn them into a sticker. Die cut is basically just lettering. One color stickers.

    Iv ran s Facebook ad before and got thousands of impressions and s few likes. But not really any work requests. I targeted my friends friends. People who I am not friends with. And it was a promoted post.

    I also can cut people's actual faces and expressions of the face picture is clear enough.

    In that case, I'd head over to Kickstarter and plan a campaign around going digital. Make a 3 minute video telling your story and showing what you can do, then give them some awesome ideas to show why you're a fast-growing brand. If necessary, find a local that will let you play with their digital printer for a day or two...I bet a small business selling that stuff would agree.

    Then work your contacts to build up momentum and launch the campaign. There is a lot more to crowdfunding than that (contacting your local media/radio stations, reaching out to others with influence, etc.), but I see no reason why you can't run with the idea and make it a hit. You just need to find a couple of things to design/print that would make us say, "Woah, I would have never thought of doing that before." Then you'll be good to go.

    The best local Marketing / Advertising online today is facebook. With Facebook you can target people in your area and get fast results. Best of all, Facebook ads are fairly cheap and they WORK period. If you are not very familiar with running facebook ads I advice that you visit Youtube and search for "facebook local advertising". Trust me you will get a wealth of information that will help you make the best decisions in growing your business...

    I don't mean to burst your bubble but make sure SHIPPING costs are covered and the final price you charge (WITH SHIPPING) is still competitive and profitable. I know, I know, this sounds basic. Still, we sometimes get so bowled over by our ideas that basic stuff like shipping/taxes/return ratio/fulfillment costs are overlooked... and that leads to losses.

    I think the premise for the business is good. As long as your pricing is right and product has good quality, you shouldn't have a problem making sales. Here are a few tips I have for you:

    Create a plan to scale the business, before you get big. You can manage your sales now because you aren't doing any serious volume. What would happen if you started getting successful and had to create 50-100 decals per week? Could you do it? What about 300? Have a plan in place. By the way, this is a good problem to have!

    Define "custom" clearly for your buyers. Make sure you aren't selling a $5 decal that takes you an hour to prepare and produce. This is impossible to scale. Either you have to charge more for truly custom designs or improve the intake and production process. This is why most companies require larger orders, to ensure it's worth their time and effort.

      Thanks for the advice. I can put up a big number of decals per day and week.

      I can only do smaller decal jobs, not vehicle wraps or anything major though like local shops can do.

      The local shops who make decals also won't do anything small for people who just have a single request. That is where I come into place. But I want to find LOTS of other requests so its keeping me busy.

      Honestly, local friends. All over Facebook, I will get random messages, "Hey can you make this?"

      I'm also apart of over 10-15 groups on Facebook for local buy/sell/trade groups and people recommend me and tag my name and I end up getting more business.

      But there is also a car group on there a bunch of people once a week meet up in town to show their cars. There is a group for it I get a lot of business there sometimes for car decals. But nothing to where Im being kept so busy though. Its every once in a while.

    Forget all the random Facebook/Youtube advertising.

    Target something specific like people that own/ride horses (one example). They all own pickup trucks, most have/buy western style window decals (example).

    Where do horse owners hang out?

    Repeat with other niches as needed...

    Think like a buyer in order to find buyers.

      Continuing with the horse niche example...

      Each traffic source is unique, there's not a one size fits all for everything though you can find some traffic searching Google.

      Example:

      ...which returns a forum thread (here) where someone else was selling the same decals/stickers but they abandoned the thread.

      The same person from the horse forum has etsy & ebay stores, notice all the horse related sales.

      If you was interested in the Love Valley horse traffic then do a Google search like this:

      Maybe even partner with other well established small mom & pop horse businesses where you give them custom made decals/stickers in exchange for email list (advertising).

      Example:

      The horse niche is a single example that I know has the buyer attitude for decals/stickers.

      Be creative in how you find targeted traffic.
