Any Tips on How To Improve My Site?

Hi everyone,
Im tentatively putting up my first niche site here for you guys to give me advice on. It gets very little traffic, and has made pretty much no money thus far. That said, I haven't been promoting it, and I'm really bad at link-building. I've had it for a few months.

It's in a topic I like and know a bit about, and I would love to be able to turn this into a money-maker, but before I start paid ads (both Adwords and Facebook targeted ads) I want to make sure that my site is up to scratch.

Any advice you could give me would be very much appreciated

Thanks.

Is this strictly a review site for beard trimming products?

Or is it a Community of sorts for guys who are passionate about having beards and like to talk about it,and create bonds with others, get and give advice etc..etc..

You need to really identify this. Because your Optin is kind of ambiguous about this. Join our Community ?????

It is not really a good 'magnet.'
You should say something that gets people to want to sign up. And give out their email address. This does not do that.

Like...'Join our VIP List where as a Member you will get EXCLUSIVE special Discounts on selected products that will give you that Beard you always dreamed about '

      Hey Robert,
Thank you for this. Yeah, so I just set up my Opt-In box today and haven't really tweaked it yet. I'm pretty sure that I will need to offer a free ebook or other enticer, but at the minute, I'll work on the wording of it until I have something to give away.

The static home-page is indeed very affiliate site related. Perhaps I should make more of the Beardology section shine through.

Do you think there is more profit potential in a community or just a niche site?

Not a bad looking site. I like the background picture you see first. I agree with the post above that the magnest of "joining the community" is not much of a draw. I am not sure what would be better but I would think on that a bit.

For a community page it seems rather ad / review centric. Perhaps some other content such as The History of Beards, or great men in history who had beards, etc. Also for the building of a community perhaps having people post there own "cool beard pictures". Just a few ideas. Best of luck to you.

So there's actually quite a nice community of us on twitter (1500 followers) and I've just started a Facebook page today with a Beard Of The Day because I kept getting so many pictures!

I agree that for a community, the homepage is very much like an affiliate. Would you recommend not having a static homepage?

      Thank you for the reply

As said twice above, joining a community doesn't entice people to give up their email, i wouldn't especially when i only see reviews on beard trimmers, where's the community aspect in that?

A good point, the review page is the homepage, which isn't a great idea maybe, but most of the traffic comes from social media, so they are aware of the community.

Nice tips so far, but instead of giving you more of what everyone has already given you (general/ marginal tips). I'd like to encourage you to go to the copywriter section and get their views.

Maybe, you have your own personal reasons, but I'm not sure why you'd ask advice from random internet marketers (sorry guys, I include myself too) when you can get experts who make a living at it to help you for Free.

This is your web site (your bread and butter). You don't just want any advice, you want the best advice you can get, don't you?

Most people in this section are not million dollar copywriters, many in the copywriter section IS ... and they'll critique your website for FREE.

        So, to Summarize ...
        Million Dollar Copywriters
        or
Internet Marketers (most who are still trying to succeed like you)

            Zenith Blue,

I would make the background picture smaller. Reason being so you can have your opt-in above the fold.

There is not an incentive for me to give you my email address and opt-in to your newsletter. Try giving away a lead magnet to entice me to opt-in. An example of one you might offer is 5 reasons you need a beard trimmer (you already know 2 of them). Make up a one page PDF that the prospect will receive once they opt-in.

            I hope this helps!

That's how they make a living, most charge upwards of $200 an hour creating, advising, critiquing and writing copy for websites.

Show your passion. The domain is my man beard and you don't talk about yourself. That personal touch and that hint of passion will bring you visitors. And it will create your community.

Another tip -- I'm sure you can't always talk about your own beard. Go to CL and ask for personal stories there. Compensation is preferred but there are PLENTY of people who will support your site and provide articles/stories for free as long as you provide them with credit.

Build it up and you'll be good.

    Best of luck!

The bounce rate for this site is probably over 50%. You need better line spacing and reader-friendly font sizes and font choices. Also, you need more pictures.

You're totally right, bounce rate is 78%. I'm looking to bring it down. Haven't thought too deeply about the font, kind of focusing on the bigger stuff, but sometimes it's the little things that matter! Thanks for the comment.

Yes, it's the 'little stuff' like font, spacing, and visual cues that can reduce your bounce rate and give your content more time to BUILD credibility. Remember, no one will buy from your site if they don't' think it's credible. You don't give them that opportunity if your bounce rate is over 50%.

          Great point,
Would you suggest I get rid of the static homepage and just have it as a rolling page of the newest content? I'm concerned that there isn't enough affiliate offers on the 'blog' style posts that will result in sales.

Basically, I'm torn between building up a community and a list, and just trying to make Amazon income. Which would you suggest is the better option?

Hey Steve, Thanks for the comment.

Yes of course I agree with you. I never said there was anything wrong with the site, and I also outlined the reason why it wasn't getting traffic was because i want promoting it. I am starting now and asked for advice, which has been very helpful.

I don't think there's anything fundamentally wrong with the site, just wanted to see what people thought. I'm glad I asked because the suggestions have been helpful

What is your niche? And why did you say you are bad at link building?
Any link building strategies you've done already??
In order to make money from it there is no other way than to promote it.
But first you must have to optimize it on page, analyze your competitor and your target market so you'll have a direction on where do you want to be.

I would like to suggest you that firstly you should make your site attractive so that it can attractive more online visitors towards it and secondly you have to make your site fully informative. Both these points are very crucial in order to drive more customers towards your business.

Next important thing is that you have to use high quality content in your website to give all the information about your business in short. Even by connecting with social media sites you can get the huge people's presence on your site within an instant. This is what you should do for getting huge profit for your business.

The guys above gave you some great advice on how to 'implement' changes in your Ad Copy, Lead Magnet and the like. Make sure that you actually make these changes first (and get them out of the way) then get on to some 'traffic' generation strategies.

I would look into FREE Marketing methods like posting your content where your 'target' market hangs out. I don't have a clue where 'beard' guys hang out other than Youtube. However, the one's that hangout there are already selling similar products.

You can study them since you are in the same niche.

In the end, without real 'consistent' traffic coming in daily, you won't get enough statistics on how to improve 'conversions'.

I agree with others on the sign up call to action. The visitor is going to want to know what's in it for them - what are they signing up for and why? I'd work on that.

Overall, a sharp enough looking site - crisp and clean. The navigation, though, needs some work to make it more user-friendly. Here are some thoughts:
      1. While the large header image looks nice, the only navigation options your visitor sees on many desktop/laptop sizes is the Contact Us and Privacy Policy tabs. Those are probably of no interest to a new visitor and limited interest to repeat visitors. Your visitor needs to more quickly see some site organization that will let them know what's available on your site.
      2. Slightly different experience on mobile (at least on my Samsung) but the Contact/Privacy nav menu takes priority and then, lower down, there's a second menu for the meat of your site. You want that "meat" readily available.
      3. I would change the content of the home page and remove all affiliate links from that page. The number of affiliate links inside content can have an impact on rankings and you want to give that home page the best shot possible at ranking well. I know there are lots of people who will tell you to keep affiliate links on the home page. I'm not one of them.
      4. I'd remove the ability to post comments on the home page. You'll either lose control of the on-page optimization for that page OR you'll irritate visitors who post there only to find you've deleted or not approved their comments because you don't want it to be part of your home page. (I would, though, make sure to keep comments open on your posts.)
      5. The content in the reviews is....odd. Most of it reads very well but every now and then a phrase makes me stop and think "spun". Look at the MB4040 post. In the third paragraph it mentions something about "even if you don't have enough to sell". I have no idea what you're saying here. Later in that post it refers to "delicious hair". ???? Okay, I'm female so maybe this is a guy thing? LOL! The phrase just makes me stop short. It's those odd sort of phrases that make me think a spinner was used somewhere but then it's mixed in with this great content and phrasing that's easy to read, informative, and natural-sounding.
      6. I get WHY you're linking out to external sites in your reviews but I'm not sure I understand the choices for the content to which you're linking. Why make your visitor open a tab to a FB post? A picture of Cliff Richard? I have no idea who that is (no laughing) but once you've piqued my curiosity I'm the sort that will leave your site entirely to go off and figure it out. And I might forget to come back to your site....the link just doesn't tie in with the goal of helping the reader make a decision on that trimmer.
      7. You might consider using <h2> tags for your review subtitles rather than <h4>. They'll carry a little more weight.
      8. Where's your required Amazon Associate's disclosure statement?
You're off to a great start, though. Stick with it!

Great but from the look of your site , you can change it to post type homepage. You're brand name are not that limited to content and you can scale up to 100 article . Still , you can add more if you're really passionate about that niche.

By the way , I've been a long time reader of nichepursuit and spencer ( owner of the site ) coaching a student. Which you have more likely the same niche . But his site are more about safety razors/electric shavers . Try to look up on this site : apennyshaved.com this the case study that they've made .

Oh yeah, I actually read Niche Pursuits, and saw that. Similar niche, but targeting different audiences and keywords. His site did really well if I recall. What do you mean by post type homepage? You think I should remove the 'money' page as my homepage?

I just saw your site. I think your site is awesome. It is working fine. What I suggest is for you to increase user interaction. For example, you would give huge discounts for those who will join your community for the next 30 days... Give them offers such as sales of the month or deals for the month. Set up a community forum for members and give them electronic points which they can use as credits in their future purchases.

That sounds like a great idea in theory, but seeing as the product are affiliate products, it's impossible.

A while back, there was a post on BHW that detailed how to make successful Amazon affiliate niche sites (I'm not sure if I'm allowed to link to it or not). It used a beard trimmer site as an example, very similar to the way you have yours set up. I'm guessing a lot of newer marketers did the same thing, without picking a new category.

The niche itself is very saturated and you really need to be able to get on the first page of Google to be successful with Amazon sites, unless you're able to find another stream of steady traffic. Honestly, with this particular niche, you're going to need some heavy SEO done on your site if you want good results.

Otherwise, I'd expect it to take a long time to start ranking. If you can't afford to do SEO, I'd post at least one article on your blog every week that was highly optimized and hope for traffic to start coming that way.

P.S. - You need to make your images link to Amazon as well, and I'd be sure to optimize the titles i.e. "best-mens-shaver-2015" etc. Right now, if I click one of your images, it takes me to a static page of the image itself rather than Amazon. Big no-no.

Big no-no.
      Thanks for the tips Jennifer!

You're right, the niche is saturated, but the keywords I'm targeting are definitely rankable. I've done a lot of keyword research and very flimsy sites are ranking and have been consistently for months and months.

My aim is to publish at least one post per week onto the site - I've noticed a small bump in rankings across the search engines (although nothing of note obviously).

I also seem to be making amazon affiliate sales on non-beard related products. I know their cookie is stored, but half my sales have been from non-beard related stuff. Very odd.

Most of my images actually do link to amazon, but you've made me aware of a lot that haven't, so thank you! I will rectify that immediately.

No problem! That's awesome that you're at least making some sales from it. I wish you luck in ranking.

By the way, most of my Amazon sales are stuff I'm not actually promoting, either. That's the power of the cookie

        Cheers,
        Jen

The site looks great except for the huge header pic at the top of the page. Get rid of it and replace with text/graphic that communicates what your blog is all about - and what each visitor will get by visiting your blog.

Why should someone "join your community"? Clarify. What will each subscriber get from giving your their email address?

Sounds like you're all about the quick buck. I don't see much content till the end of the page. The site is good, but with some simple changes it can be better.

Thanks. There's lots of content on the site, did you not see? Perhaps that is because the homepage is the main sales page. This is obviously hurting my site when it comes to building a community.

I have the feeling that if I can build up a list, it will be more profitable than the quick buck.

Instead of encouraging to joining the community if you could just run a picture competition for people with beards and give away the best trimmer to the winner & runnerups you will get the email, attention, repeat visitors, interaction, buzz.

The website design is good and clean. just consider the above suggestion.
