How do they come up with such a funny but brilliant brand name? I am trying to come up with something similar but I am no where near. What is the secret ingredient?

Come up with something that grabs the mind of your audience members and makes them say 'WHAT?' You can make all sorts of random connections.

  • Natural creativity. I come up with amazing names and ideas all of the time. I'm sure others do as well. If you practice any creative activities, it shouldn't be too hard to come up with catchy names.

It really isnt hard, just don't doubt yourself and understand creative processes

those names are only great because they have successful companies attached to them. the names didnt make or break the success of the company at all. Instead, their successful business made those names relevant.

for every one of those kind of names you know, there are literally thousands of failed businesses with equally as creative names. Their creators just didnt have the business sense, skill, capital..... to make their business successful, so their awesome names are essentially worthless.

Think of two very familiar, short words that are not related and combine them. It's best if one is a noun and the other a noun or adjective.

Use the tools at Lean Domain Search and you can come up with a whole list of possibilities.

So, for example, you might want to focus on animals or birds, etc.

I found these available names in about a minute:

      bluerattlesnake.com
      cryingclam.com
      lazydove.com
      fatchipmunk.com

      You get the idea.

There are millions of combinations of unlikely terms that can be registered.

As David (above) said: In the end, it was the business that made the name awesome.

Excellent point. While an attention-grabbing name is important, what's more crucial is the marketing SYSTEMS AND METHODS put into play by companies.

  • Sometimes they are not brilliantly thought up but happen by accident..

In the case of Godaddy, the company was originally named: "Jomax Technologies"
in 1997 when it was founded.

It was named after "Jomax Road", an old dirt road that the owner used to pass
    when driving to work.

In 1999 when Jomax Technologies had their first real product, they wanted a better name
in order to compete, as they found themselves at the hight of the dotcom boom,
and they needed to stand out.

Someone in their staff suggested "Big Daddy"

    However that domain was taken.

"Go Daddy" was available as a domain though.

    So they bought it!

I trust that a large chunk of online business names today have quite a bit to do with what's available as a dot com. Or whatever domain extension is used in your country, etc.

For the non-native English speaker like me, I can only outsource the name to Fiverr or make a brand name contest.

Most of those type of names are neither brilliant or funny. They could have just as easily failed, and I am sure there are many that did. But, like a previous poster mentioned, it is the business and marketing attached to the name.

One thing you could do is go visit a state that has legalized marijuana. Bring a pad and pen and list all the funny and brilliant names that come to you.

A bar of iron cost $5. Made into horseshoes, it's worth $12. Made into needles, it's worth $3500. Made into balance springs for watches, it's worth $300,000. Your value is determined by what you are able to make of yourself

These brands are not great because of the funny names. Think how many thousands enterprises appear every day in the world with funny names, and how many of them really become successful brands.

Facebook would become great with any other name. What "face book" means? It's stupid. But since they are great in their business, now no one would say "Hey, look at those morons, what an idiotic name they chosen".

Carry a pen and paper everywhere you go. You might get a few names to pop up in your mind. When this happens, you need to be ready to write it down.

Most of these companies that you mentioned, have people working for them and the come up with different names. The owner probably does not come up with these names anyway.

First of all, creativity is the main 'ingredient' for coming up with such domain names. But they have also invested a lot (time + money, I presume) to brand themselves! Without some publicity, even the most creative domain name in the world will be forgotten.

I agree with David Keith, the name sound good because they are already successful.

Think about how many names does amazon have in the beginning.

When you become famous, all what you did/do looks like a great ideas.

Personally, I think most of the names are weird and some bordering on assinine. Sometimes I don't think these companies are successful because of their name, but they're successful despite their name. Maybe it makes them work harder in some psychological/motivational way (my speculation).

The old school rule book for naming a business says to choose a name ...
      • That describes what you do or aspire to do.
      • That's named after the owner or creator.
      • After an inspiring figure, symbol or idea.
      or
      • Any other active verb or noun.

But now it's like a "abstract/hodgepodge" of a word or words ... dot com -that only has meaning to the creator ...and away we go.

Now if you don't have to ask the owner what the name means you probably missed the mark by today's standards. The name shouldn't be self-explanatory that's for sure.

But as others have said it's the marketing behind the name that's most important. One thing for sure these new school companies don't depend on their name to carry them as much as the past. Not sure whether that's bad or good. Like I said this is "new school" so the jury is still out.
