Should I buy a domain that's catchy?

When it comes to domain names, should you just pick one that sounds catchy or move on?

How important is the domain name really?

Wondering just out of curiosity's sake!

I have no idea what that means. I like catchy domain names. My favorite that I own is oybay.com. You either get it right away or it's lost on you. :-)

    Yes.

There is often a distinction made between branded - or brandable - domains and keyword domains. In truth, and when choosing your domain, you should always view it as branding, whether or not it contains a keyword or not. A lot can be learned from the offline world; specifically, "company branding." Branding is essential for numerous reasons and, as an internet marketer, the domain you choose should receive due consideration.

What does "catchy" mean? Catchy is anything that is instantly appealing and memorable. Whether you choose a brandable domain like Twitter.com or a keyword domain like Business.com, you should always aim for catchy; appealing, memorable. Appealing means that, through domain branding, you're sending the right message to the target audience. Memorable means they can find you again, mention you, spread the word.

What I would suggest is choosing a domain of value that is, at the same time, catchy. The majority of internet marketers are not interested in being th next Twitter or Facebook startup. These are people who are making blogs, squeeze pages, info-products, and so forth. These are not people hoping to become a billionaire from the endeavour. And for this reason, you should think of resale value.

Think of it this way. If you register a valuable domain, assuming you can find one, or if you get a great deal on one in the aftermarket, you're instantly adding value to the project before you even get started. The ROI is already, in short, looking good.

My advice, then: choose a valuable, catchy domain.

It depends on how you define 'catchy' and how your target audience defines 'catchy.'

In most cases, these are two TOTALLY DIFFERENT things.

Besides, the success of a site doesn't depend on its NAME.

Its success depends on the QUALITY of readers' experience consuming a site's content.

I agree with that. People will remember the name if the quality of their experience is good. Catchy name with a bad user experience will either be forgotten or passed along as a site to NOT visit. In the later case, it's better to have a name that's not catchy!

Concentrate on building a good user experience. That's what Big Daddy G (Google) is looking for. If you want Google love, then build the best site and don't get hung up on catchy vs. non-catchy.

Also, perfectionists have a tendency not to take action. Ask me how I know this.

Personally, I don't think it matters that much. You could create a website called asdfjkl.com, and if you offer EXCEPTIONAL value, people will come back again and again. A great, memorable domain name means nothing if the site itself doesn't have that much to offer.

It really depends on what you're planning on using the domain for, i almost always try to go for something easy to remember. Something catchy would likely fall into this category as well

I prefer something both "catchy" and memorable when choosing domains. In fact my favourite is 3sumplus ....... unwittingly though, it has proved impossible to work with due to it having a sexual connotation and the country in which I live (Thailand) is a bit of a nanny state when it comes to things like that and blocks my access.

Domains use to be really important for SEO... they still can be but not as much anymore.

I would highly advise picking a BRANDABLE domain name.

One that is catchy could work - does the name resonate with what you're talking about? It doesn't exactly have to describe what you're doing, but you do want something memorable so your readers will come back again and again.

If you're just creating a one off little website though, a partial EDM (exact match domain to your main keyword) would probably be better.

For authority sites though... branding all the way.

In my opinion, the domain name is VERY important.

The name itself will affect Google placing (not just the content)

The name itself will also have an effect (positive or negative)
on what pops into a persons head when they first read it.

Don't move on too quickly, take the time to choose the right name.

It all depends on what you consider as catchy. If you're running a serious company, you should avoid 'catchy/funky' domains' but stick to those that have a keyword or a name of the company.

There's different reasons for buying domain names, all with benefits of their own.

    1. Important keywords are included in the domain name. Still useful for SEO.

    2. The domain already has traffic and or links.

    3. The "easy to remember, easy to type" domain name. This is an important factor if branding is the main priority for a domain. It could be two short rhyming words like "hubstub".

    4. I also consider a domain name is that is a short, containing as few characters as possible. This can be useful if a social site like Twitter is important to your marketing and every character counts. A short domain name is also useful for setting up your own URL redirect service.

    5. The domain contains a pronounceable "word", like "Google". This ties in with the branding keywords above.

    6. A generic domain name that implies "deals". Having a general domain name that can be used for a variety of affiliate purposes can come in really handy. Something like "PricePro.com" could be used for any number of products.

I always go for a brandable URL and never an EMD (exact match domain).

Google loves a brand and if you can build this and then send some links to your brand, will help you rank quicker

One that's related to your niche is always the way to go. You can make it sound catchy if it's possible, but one that also is general with your niche so you can also use it with other offers you're trying to promote
