Having a hard time getting traffic

I run a number of websites in Norwegian (health niches) and I'm having a very hard time getting traffic. I first began making websites when it was easy to rank in the search engines; just make a lot of links, and you'd rank. Then Google came up with an update that made things harder; and the time came where everyone said, "just make good content, and people will link to you". Well, sure - but you'll have to rank for people to find your stuff and link to your site, right?

...and who in their right mind will share a link on their blog or Facebook or whatever, to a site they found after googling for a solution to their dandruff or some other embarrassing problem they have.

Off course, we have a couple of obvious traffic sources - Facebook pages, paid traffic from Google etc. But that costs a *lot* of money here - getting 1000 likes for your Facebook page will probably cost about 6-700 USD, and a single click from Google in just about any health nich will cost 2-5 USD. (Oh, and Bing and Yahoo is worthless..)

I'm all out of ideas here. Simply making good content over time just doesn't work.

One thing you might do is guest posting.

Write truly amazing content for other peoples sites that are in your niche with a link at the bottom back to your site.

You siphon off their traffic which is precisely in your niche.

The other thing is to do videos and put them on YouTube or the equivalent in your country with the link in the description going back to your site.

    Thanks, Patrick

Any good sites to write content on for free? I am looking to submit content, but for free. I rather not pay for content that I write.

Hi, building traffic is sure can be long process.
You can try youtube videos or participate in a forum in you niche the put your link in your signature.
Or you can write article in other people blog and put a link back to your website.
    Hope it helps, good luck

you can try Facebook advertising itself, not just pages - their platform takes a bit of study but enables direct targeting - a lot of people have good results depending on their niche - plus it is a lot cheaper than other PPC. Interesting you say Bing is worthless because i have heard the exact opposite, it really does depend how you target the ads, those additional options. I know article writing has fallen out of mainstream favor, but it actually still works if you do it properly and write good quality material -ezinearticles.com still generates traffic. what about your on page SEO, and quality of your links. It still is a question of quality, and of course supply/demand ratio.

If you are in a health niche then yes content would probably play an important role on your traffic and conversion. But I guess you haven't experimented on your marketing strategies. I wonder if you can give us an example subject headline of your content/s? As a searcher and a reader I want to know how it will catch my interest.

Learn Search Engine Optimization - this is probably the most important way that you want to get traffic and probably the hardest too. Search engine traffic is highly targetted traffic of people who are searching the web for a specific item.

I hear you pain. SEO? Not too reliable nowadays. What you can do is start 'syndicating' your content all over the place. That will help with the SEO until Google comes up with a new change regarding 'syndication'.

If I were you, find out where your target market hangout online and start sharing over there.

Join online communities in the health niche and start making some connections.

Have you removed all those links you talked about building in years past?

If not, the answer is fairly simple...Google is penalizing you for spam and your content will not index properly until you clean it up. So disavow those spammy links and comply with Google's last few updates, and your rank will slowly begin to return. Otherwise, social sharing and paid ads are the only way to go.

There is actually a tool that can find all those built up links but it does take a lot of work to clean house depending on how many you have.

Sometimes web masters find it easier to just start a new site.

Well, start implementing some activities like business listing, classified and most importantly you can start a social media campaign regarding Health Tips and keep increasing your fan community and ask people for their reviews. You can even use other digital media like YouTube etc. This might help you..

Ideally you should be syndicating your content (and no....content syndication is not 'guest blogging')

Content syndication is such a misunderstood, but extremely effective and powerful way to get laser targeted traffic, build links, and build your authority.

The beauty about content syndication is, if done right, will make your sites immune from any Google updates that come along.

But most people have no clue how to do content syndication the right way.

I could point you to a great resource explaining all about content syndication, but I would be breaking the rules if I mention it here.

I would highly recommend using solo ads.

Also there are ways you can still get social signals to your website to rank for these embarassing terms. Just use sites like microworkers.com to do the social signals for you.

It's artifical but as long as you do it conservatively you won't be flagged and it will work. Obviously also build an email list and email them with new articles or blog posts to get visitors on your site. The longer a visitor stays on your website, the more Google will like it.

As far as solo ads goes, I'm sure there are a ton of health newsletters that could be related to your target market that would work well.

    Hope this helps!

I kind of ignored this at the start of my journey, but You Tube is a great way in which to
achieve targeted traffic towards your business. Just make sure you have a long tailed keyword phrase (4+ words) in the title, first line of your description and your first tag and not forgetting a link to your website and/or offer.

      Hi larsjorgenbr,

Traffic is very crucial. For this, not only the content matters, what matters is your opt-in page, emails(this is contents what you referred to).

Most important is traffic. There are 2 ways to get traffic. One is paid traffic and the other is free traffic.

      Paid traffic - Solo ad's, facebooks ad's, banner ad's
Free traffic - Youtube videos(monetize it to make your video to get listed in 1st page), create a facebook page and ask your friends to like your page, you can do guest blogging etc.

Paid traffic - udimi.com(for solo ads)

If you have few dollars, what I recommend is to invest in solo ads. This will definitely fetch you more subscribers.

Later, by your content, you can convert subscribers to leads. And by your product, you can convert leads to buy your product.

      Thanks,
      Ramyashree

Loads of great stuff here, thank you! A couple of comments:

    - Guest postings. That's probably doable, I would think. The market and number of sites is very limited, but I'll look into it.

    - Youtube. I've just ignored that one in the past, but it keeps coming up so I guess there's something to it.

    - Yes, I have tried creating content about attention-grabbing news etc. but what difference does that make if I have no one to show it to in the first place. No point in having great content if it's buried in the serps.

    - Yes, I have participated in discussions etc. Did it over time, and didn't help that much. Got a lot of likes etc on for example my Facebook comments, but the volume was simply not there. I mean, there's gotta be better ways to spend my time, right? Instead of spending hours on end posting comments etc I'd rather get a day job a couple of days a week and spend the money on Facebook ads or something.

    - Maybe it's worth using Bing ads in other countries, but I've tried it in several niches and it did absolutely nothing at all. An example - a lot of people use Google to search for for example "acne" (in Norwegian, off course), but in Bing, according to their keyword tool, they've had 26(!) searches the last 3 months, and no searches at all the last 30 days.

    - SEO.. I kinda agree with Rory Singh there. Not worth the time and effort. Who knows what will happen after the next Google update..

    - No, I haven't removed the links, I've deleted/sold the sites where I had that kind of links.

    - Seems like Norway is a weird country, but business listings have done absolutely nothing for me in the past, not even for my 2 computer companies. I'll most likely do a social media campaign or two or three though.

    - Solo ads sounds interesting, so does microworkers.com. I'll look into it.

    - I've never tried syndication before.

Got some reading ahead, I suspect.

If you aren't getting any mileage from this, i.e. Organic search and social traffic comprised of people who search and share more info and details regarding these controversial news stories and trending topics, then:

You probably aren't doing it right ...
Your onsite SEO probably sucks, since the freshness of these controversial news stories gives your posts the opportunity to rank for exact match and long tail keywords ...
You probably aren't doing social media marketing right, since the freshness of these currently trending topics gives your posts the opportunity to be shared across heavily trafficked social communities by people who find you in their searches (see point above) and are enticed enough by your posts to share it with their peers (one of the most important results of social media marketing, in my opinion) ...

If you aren't getting any mileage from this, i.e. Loads of organic social traffic comprised of people enticed enough to check out what you have to say about these things, then:

You probably aren't doing it right ...
The topics you're commenting on probably aren't controversial and attention-grabbing enough for your target audience ...
Your insights probably aren't enticing enough for your target audience ...
Your commentaries probably aren't thought-provoking enough for your target audience ...
You're probably participating and contributing commentaries in the wrong places, i.e. Dead places that don't have significant viewer engagement and activity ...
You can easily train and hire someone who can do this for you and also contribute more, i.e. A native Norwegian-speaking college student in an undergraduate medical degree program (related to your niche) of a densely populated university in one of your target countries, preferably someone who's active in large social circles like fraternities / sorrorities and academic medical groups, for obvious reasons ...

And, doing the things above can allow you to become a familiar name to the owners / Webmasters / admins of those offsite locations and social communities (the right ones, of course), which could increase the likelihood of getting a positive response when you contact them for possible guest posting arrangements, content syndication agreements, ad banner / advert / solo email ad placements and other mutually beneficial collaboration opportunities ...

    I agree, to a degree...

As it does work to an extent.

Not for the fact that it's bad to create good content over and over...

But if you build it, it doesn't necessarily mean they will come.
