    Yes skoomar, you can.

You can blog in your own language.

Take times to learn english. Take a class.

Read a lot of english books / websites (preferably news website).

    Write what you love.

Block an hour a day of your time to write. write and write.

Your English in this post is much better than a lot of others.

Your age has no bearing on your chances - 40 is quite young after all. If you can't write very well, and do not have a firm idea about what you want to write about - probably blogging is not your ideal choice. If you have money you can pay other people to produce articles - but I would look at something like affiliate marketing, selling physical goods from Amazon, eBay or your own web store - have a look through this forum and investigate other online business options.
    Best of luck

I suggest that you keep your job until you can at least match your current income with your blogging income. That is of course unless you have no one depending on you to put food on the table and if you are 'on your own' you are willing to live on bread and water.

It is a miniscule number of people that can generate a liveable source of income through blogging.

People telling you that you can do it may be correct, but they have nothing to back that assertion up with other than pie in the sky platitudes about 'believing in yourself' and 'anything is possible.'

It does not matter one iota to them if you starve to death. Trust me.

Keep your day job while you test the waters and be sure to have a Plan B. Many people dream of being a successful blogger. Most experience the nightmare of abject failure.

That's not negativity. It's honesty splashed with a dollop of pragmatism.

      Cheers. - Frank

You are asking the wrong question - and people are answering by telling you what you want to hear.

Your age has nothing at all to do with anything. Online - no one knows how old you are - what color you are - what your gender is - or whether you are handsome or ugly as dirt. None of that shows.

Your English is another matter. If this thread is an indication - your English is not good enough to be a highly successful blogger IF YOU ARE TRYING TO ATTRACT ENGLISH FIRST LANGUAGE AUDIENCE. That might change if you have a unique selling point or an outstanding product but that doesn't seem to be the case here.

If, however, you are writing in your own language...and you have something to say - you could do well with a blog.

Some will say this is "negative" or "unfair" - no, it's realistic. There are too many good sites and blogs for anyone to stay on a site that makes them uncomfortable due to misuse of language.

  • The vast majority of blogs out there make little to no money, even with well written content. Those that do make money have typically been up and running for years.

While it is theoretically possible to replace your current income with a blog, it is exceedingly unlikely that you will do so. If you feel that this is something you want to try anyway, go for it! But do it as a hobby or side business until you become a success, if that time ever comes.

Whatever you choose to do, I wish you the best of luck.

    God Bless

There's a need to correct some things written about John Chow - a friend. John was born in China and emigrated to Vancouver, BC with his family at 8 years old. In China he lived in a rough 'house' built by his grandfather that had no electricity or running water. Today he's one of the very top money makers online worldwide. He now lives in Southern California and makes $200,000 (est.) a month from various enterprises. His blog brings in perhaps $30,000 or so. Read more about him here http://bit.ly/1uqQ8Ou.

You can very well become a GREAT blogger, given the determination and grit to crush through any hurdles that stand in your way.

The only limitation from becoming a good blogger is yourself.
All the information, training, and mentorship is out there (mostly for free).

take it step-by-step, don't try to learn EVERYTHING before starting (this is called procrastination).

Take massive, yet imperfect action and learn as you go.
Accept that it will be a fun challenge.
Marry the process, divorce the outcome.

As a native English-speaker, I have o say that your English is not as bad as you think. Also, blogging is not about the speed at which you write. It is about the quality of your content and building a following. Also, if your native language is common, you can write in it. Writing in your native language could be a good thing because it allows you to stand out. If your blog is one of the few blogs in your language, people that speak your language will automatically come to your for whatever information you provide.

Your age doesn't matter. I am going to be 44 this July and this wouldn't stop me from trying out anything new. You are generation X like me that have Baby Boomers for parents.

I know about (3) Baby Boomers who have just learned how to blog over the last 2 years and they are not only blogging, they are actually making money.

Don't ever put fences on your potential or sell yourself short.

As others have said above, your English isn't bad and it has room for improvement. The more you write and read, the more fluent you will become.

You could also choose to write in your native language for that target market.

Well. You mentioned here that your writing speed is slow, it does not matter. If you write 1 month daily, your speed will be increased. so the speed is a lame argument. You also mentioned here, that your English is poor. Yes, it is very important. You can learn the Language by practicing. By doing practicing, your Skill will be increasing gradually. Most of the people of the world are using the English as a second language. So you will be able to use the language also. Best of luck.

Yeah you can become a good blogger. You have to put in the work and market (and monetize it) if you want to make money from it. Don't let your age get in the way. Find a niche that you can cater to, and let your blog serve as the "destination" to be at in your niche. Consider put Google Adsense and affiliate products on your blog too. Or if you know how to create info-products, promote those on your blog too.

Certainly everyone can be a good blogger if they only write about what they are really good at or their area of expertise.

A blogger fails in most cases when they try to focus more on earning money then writing genuine content and providing useful information out of their experience and domain/vertical.

You said your english is poor, you didn't said that you "don't know english". I suggest you should start blogging about what you are good at and use english as your language so you have a large audience to target.

Being a good blogger won't help you make money, if that's what you're asking. Being a good blogger and great at generating traffic and monetizing it, now that's more like it. There are people who write well but couldn't drive traffic to their websites even if you put a gun to their heads (like me), and there are others who are mediocre at writing, but great at generating leads and sales, so who cares their writing skills are mediocre? They're making money, aren't they?

Age has absolutely nothing to do with it, if you will become a successful blogger or not is all up to you: your writing skills, your ideas, how you manage to keep up with the changes and the new trends and so on (for instance, a big issue for many website owners is making their websites responsive).

I suggest you keep your job though, start blogging on the side and see where it leads, you're gonna need some time to gain popularity with a new website.

Wow don't let that get in the way....to an 80year old you are a baby,,,,,just remember that...and who knows you might live that long so here's to another 40years of perfecting something. Was the pope born the pope? Did a flower just appear? NO - these things became what they are now from something else....the only person that gets in your way is you...you can do anything just start somewhere and watch it grow,,,,it is the natural momentum of things....but you must add to it regularly just like a plant or flower needs regular nuturing. You will become an expert over time.Pick something you like to write about and go from there you have nothing to lose.

You've got a lot of good advice in this thread and I agree that 40 is young enough, long way. Your age may even be an advantage if you target a more mature audience (and older people generally have more spending power).

But from your question I got a feeling that your main motivation is the money, or quitting your job, and blogging is just the means.

If that is the case let me tell you that blogging is not the best or fastest way for most people to achieve such a goal (although I understand that from reading IM forums and materials one would get such impression). Yes, we all know the superstars with popular blogs, but 1) these people have been around for many years, growing their blogs and businesses gradually 2) besides these dozens/hundreds of star bloggers there are millions who have tried and the success didn't come. If you have some language limitations, they can be overcome, but they are yet another factor that makes your odds lower.

I don't want to discourage you and if you have a vision and feel an urge to share your ideas with the world via a blog (i.e. the money is not the primary motivation), then go for it. Otherwise, before you commit to the hard work of blogging, you may want to spend some time researching and thinking about other ways to make money online. Not every website needs to be a blog - in fact, most are not. For every famous blogger there are tens or hundreds of noname internet marketers and businessmen who make the same or even more money, just without the high profile.

There are many possible business models and blogging is just one of them. Generally most sound business models include
      1) something to sell, like products, services, other people's products or ads,
      2) a way to get visitors/leads/attention and
      3) a way to make these leads/visitors do the action that brings the money (buy the product, click the ad... = convert).

Note that blogging, in its narrow meaning and without anything else, only deals with 2) (and perhaps a little of 3 via long term build up of trust and brand), so even if you choose blogging as your business, you will also need to find something for 1+3 to make your business complete and profitable.

If you read just this forum for a while, you will keep coming across different ways of making money on a daily basis. Not all advice is good of course, but there's a lot of useful info.

Of course, there is no reason to wait and not start your website/blog now and start writing articles. But think beyond blogging. Think what you will do to grow your income once your blog starts to get more visitors.

      Good luck.

You could easily start building your network while you keep your day job. That network is going to be one of your first sources of traffic when you do start your blog. Build up your social profiles on Twitter, facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram or wherever. Make some friends. Share some great links with them. Build up trust. Have conversations with them. Be helpful.

Then, when you start blogging and sharing your own content into what you are already doing, it will be easier to get started as a blogger. Someone with a good social media presence can start a brand new blog today and get traffic today.

Anyone can blog once they go through few articles or videos about how to blog.
Regarding the language, there're many sites available that can give you advice about the grammatical corrections to be done to the content.
Speed will improve over a period of time.
As suggested by someone you can take help of a proofreader. Or just blog and don't bother about the language. You will be definitely a much better blogger after two or three months. You can revisit the content and correct it yourself.
Regarding job, I suggest that you should continue with your day job and once you start seeing a decent income from the blog, you can quit it and totally dedicate yourself to the blog.

It's not about writing speed and English proficiency. No, you are not going to be a full time blogger, but you can think of just WRITING. You definitely saw and did a lot so far - write a book and publish it online. It may be a life changer from all points of view, including the financial one. Or not, of course. Nobody wants to be a full time blogger. I am thinking of writing good, original content and not just rewriting shit. There's a lot to say about this, but - as others pointed out already - you are asking the wrong question.

My personal advice - start a personal blog and write about the interesting things in your life. Family, stuff at work, general life hacks, stuff that others would find interesting. See if you can commit to writing at least one article every two days for at least three months. NO EXCUSES for missing more than two articles each month. If you can do this and still have stuff to write about after two months, then you're good to go.

Right, that should have the masses glued to their seats and coming back for more.

      C'mon, man!

@BigFrank: MAYBE his life has interesting stuff in it, not just click magnets/mail list building content as most people here think of. One of the top 5 bloggers in Romania started by writing about his own life and trouble he had with his neighbors. The blog took off in just a few months from a few readers to over 20.000/day. No SEO, no optimization, just well written, funny content that was shared by people with their friends and so on. That happened about 10 years ago and the blog is still standing, having a bunch of readers and earning him a good living (no other job, just blogging for himself). You should think outside the box for a bit...

That's hilarious. I love it when people take a very unique occurrence and try to equate it to something that anyone can do, 'if they just put their mind to it and believe.' That's pure tripe. Perhaps the OP has the most uninteresting life of anyone living on the planet. What if his writing induces narcolepsy? Why is your scenario any more likely than mine to be the case? News flash - it's not! Do you see how ridiculous your post is? lol

Thanks for your advice about "thinking outside the box." I'm going to write that down, post it on my bathroom mirror and see how life changing that trite cliché actually is.

          Cheers. - Frank

If his writing induces narcolepsy he could use it to treat people suffering from insomnia. I can already see it - www.insomniacureblog.com or something like that...
My post is based on a real story. I am sure there are plenty more like this. I think he should give us more details instead of debating here without a goal. I am not happy for being right the same as I'm not sad when I'm wrong. It just happens...

As far as blogs go, just a few per million, I would guess. :-)

See, we already found something for him! Now he only needs to start writing some narcoleptic stories and do a bit of keyword research in the meantime to improve the whole stuff on the fly. Next step would be a digital ebook that treats insomnia. "I can guarantee you won't get to the end - 99.9% of those who read it fell asleep by the end of third chapter."

I can guarantee that even if you created a step-by-step plan and offered to do half the work, nothing would transpire as most of these posters want you to do all the work and they should get to keep all of the money. Only then will the even consider it.

Posts like these should never be taken seriously.

Yeah, that's the sad truth. A lot of people who want to make money on the Web have no skills and they want it to be as easy as possible. Having no skills is no biggie, but lacking the will to acuire any kind of skills is the problem. Well, for some work-for-a-cent websites it's a gold mine...

    Sure thing!
Age has no bearing on the Internet. First you must ask yourself what is your purpose for starting a blog.
If you need fast cash. Fast meaning in the next 90 days. The blog is not the way to go. Blog take a lot of time to build up. Cheers!
