Thanked 1000+ means Millionaire?

Hi,

When I Joined this forum, I thought all the warriors
who got thanked 1000+ were millionaires

But after many years, it is realized that
number of times thanked is just a measure of
how helpful a warrior is.

Yet one question arises from curiosity

"Is there any relationship between number of times thanked
and how much money they make?
"

When ever I see someone with 1000+ thanked, it's fun
to imagine that he must be making at least $10k/month

Your thoughts please

Regards

There's honestly no correlation. And in my case, at least, the high thanks is because I'd rather help people than make money. I hate it when I have to tell someone "hey, I could help you, but you didn't give me money so I won't." I'm too much of a soft touch and I give out way too much help for free.

I don't know, I would have a suspicion that the people here with the most thanks would be sought-after professionals in whatever field they're in. Now, maybe that doesn't mean they're making huge money, but helping others is a basic trait of any good business.

The majority of some people's thanks are for telling jokes or sharing cute stories in the OT section. So no,thanks has absolutely nothing to do with anything other than someone liked something that was written. What was written may have been a zinger at Democrats or about life on Mars or a joke about a fellow member.

Absolutely not. The number of thanks are an indication of appreciation by members of the forum for a particular post. It could be that the "thanker" agreed with a post, that he found it helpful, or that it was an answer to a question by the OP.

If a member carries a lot of thanks, it suggests that he/she has been around for awhile and (most likely) tries to help others often . . . but the number of thanks have no bearing on a person's income.

The very best to all of you,

Devote enough time to the industry and you come to learn the players. You either know of them by reputation or you meet and get drunk with them at conventions. While the following list of traits is not concrete evidence of the wealthy, I know from personal experience that, as a whole, these act as quite a sturdy indication.

    1. Garners Respect.
    2. Upbeat, Highly-Positive.
    3. Respectful of Others.
    4. Wide Industry Knowledge.
    5. Often Introduces Little-Known or Discussed Topics.
    6. Intelligent.
    7. Literate.
    8. Rarely Asks Questions.
    9. Keen to "Pay it Forward" by Helping Newbies.

Those don't apply in many cases, of course. I'm more than a little familiar, for instance, with such chaps who are decidely lacking in the "literate" department, and I could give further examples. Overall, though, pretty good tell-tale signs.

Now for some advice: I'm surprised, or maybe I missed it, that no one has said something along these lines, "Forget about how rich other people are; concentrate on getting rich yourself." If you receive it, ignore it. I discovered a long time ago, approaching 20 years actually, that following the highly-successful and, when the time comes, working with them, has a "rubbing off" effect. In short: you pick up a great deal of useful information.

even if there was, what difference does it really make. There are lots of thanks that are not deserved, in fact, I have a few. But when I see questions/conversations like this I always think back to a question that is often asked here. and that question is "Why do people fail at IM"

Man, if each thanks I received on my posts here equated to $1000, than I'd stop working a lot of projects I was working on and spend more time posting here.

But yeah, as others have said, no correlation whatsoever.

What the thanks number indicates, if nothing else, is that you've made a positive connection with others, even it was just for a goofy comment. That's an important skill in marketing. And there are other marketing lessons to be picked up if you pay attention.

For example, notice how reciprocity (one of Cialdini's principles of influence) kicks in when posts are return-thanked. Also, see how certain groups of members (tribes?) within the forum tend to thank each other more frequently.

Then there's the perceived authority effect whereby those with tons of thanks tend to receive more thanks at least partly by virtue of the number of thanks they already have, even if they might not be saying anything particularly original.

So thanks have their uses. And we get to trade them in for Air Miles when we reach 10,000.

I was going to thank that post Frank, but the thought of being in your tribe frightens me a little. If you get to 9,999 maybe I'll go back and thank it so you can get your air miles. Hope you understand.

When I Joined this forum, I thought all the warriors

On this new platform in 2008 - the "thanks" system replaced "buy me a beer" as I recall.

I don't know why anyone would think "thanks" is a measure of money - or why some think it's always important to claim "thanks" don't matter at all.

I appreciate it when someone thanks me for bothering to answer a question or make a suggestion to them...I thank people when they post a good idea or answer or when I agree with what they posted. That's it - nothing more to it. The last thing anyone here should be worrying about is someone ELSE's number of thanks!

You'd be wrong for a number of reasons.

One reason is that many in this forum market to this forum's members. So posting and helping is part of their marketing strategy. That's no different than other marketing activities such as writing an email or posting a guest article or tightening up page optimization which are all done off forum.

Thank you all for your replies.

It's really great to see a lot of "high thanked"
      warriors commenting

I think this thread will help those who are
looking for a set of warriors with high thanked numbers.

Anyway it's proved that there's no relation between
number of times thanked and how much money they make.

Willingness to help(or being funny to) others has nothing to do with

    Too funny.

I have never heard anyone make this observation or have a question about this.

There is NO correlation. But it stands a reasonable chance that these people are doing relatively well

Not 100% but a good chance.

I deliberated about adding a caveat to the above, and in that original post, obviously elected not to mention it. You'll see why after I say it.

Saying this as delicately as possible: in an environment where sharing business models is encouraged, by all, the number of received thanks is indeed an extremely accurate indicator of wealth.

    It works like this.

You share a business model and the forum community reads it and assess its value. Since a large forum is comprised of many experienced marketers, and since many marketers of all levels of experience are want to try your mentioned business model, you tend to receive very accurate feedback:

    "This works! . . . Thanks for sharing! . . . I do this myself; fantastic share! . . . Etc."

It's a bit like Amazon. If a product is good, the reviews are good; and vice versa.

Onto my point: what you tend to find is people, in such an environment, people who have very high "thank counts" have shared some extraordinary information that has, as a consequence, garnered an extraordinary amount of thanks. The average marketers, or the inept, are not rewarded as well; the clever, and usually that means the wealthy on a marketing forum, are rewarded. It's as simple as that. And if someone points out that this scenario happens in the War Room, hang your head in shame.

I love WF and I enjoy posting here. The setup is just a little different than the design above. Having a high thank count generally means that you have dipped into thousands of threads and given some worthwhile advice. It takes a great deal of time to do this; meaning that people with time on their hands to do it are either not wealthy, or they are wealthy, but have the extra time on their hands to post a lot. Maybe it's a better system, but it does make it impossible to base success on thank count, and therefore who to follow for educational purposes.

I have a high number of thanks and posts - built up since 2002 when this forum was NOT free to join. I've earned a living online for years. Some years were great, some not so good - but I've survived and paid my own way.

I got my start on this forum and had a lot of help along the way from members here - so though I don't sell MMO products or try to sell anything to members here now...I do keep posting because I like people here and I can pay it forward a bit.

In recent months there have been quite a few threads claiming number of thanks/posts/comments/years of participation are irrelevant.

Those threads are usually by people selling stuff here - who are trying to create a reputation and think putting down long term members makes them look relevant. Maybe it works for them - really don't care. Maybe they truly believe those who are NOT selling here should not offer advice. Really don't care about that, either.

I'm not looking to sell products in my sig, add you to a list or become your paid coach. For that reason, I may not tell you what you want to hear - but I will post the truth as I see it...from years of working online. Feel free to ignore me - it's been done before

I haven't read any of the post before me (on purpose) as not to be influenced. So, forgive me if I've repeated something. But no 1,000's of thanks doesn't mean millionaire.

I speculate in many cases it doesn't even mean making money. Much like a school teacher whose good at teaching but not at making money from what they teach. Or the person who spends too much time on the Forum (instead of making money), unless he's doing forum marketing.

What Thanks means (to me personally) is ...
        • A person whose active on the forum.
        • In most cases they make it priority to be helpful - not just sell.
        • They're usually good listeners (sometimes to a fault).
        • Usually they're people who listen not only to what you say ... but what you don't say and will call you on it at times.
        • They're especially active at helping or scolding newbies (or newbie acting Warriors) when it's appropriate.
        • You normally have to have a somewhat thicker skin when you ask them for advice, because you'll often get it straight with no chaser so brace yourself.
        • Many are somewhat impatient with newbies who ask questions without using the search function for answers. So, be prepared if you didn't do it.

On the other hand they're many "Thank You cliques" floating around. These cliques
        • Pay each other thanks for posting one liners and quips, (that has nothing to do with the question).
        • And others for just coming back and posting because they've been gone for awhile.
        • There's also the Thank Me ... I'll Thank You Back gesture.
I have no problem with any of that, it all adds a "positive social vibe" to an otherwise ALL BUSINESS forum - but it doesn't mean rich or even making money. It just means making online friends.

So, in my opinion it's all good, it just doesn't mean money earned.

It's my personal goal to give more thank you's than I get this year. I'd like to think the person who takes the time to thank others will tend to be the millionaire sooner - whether inwardly or outwardly.

It's not like WF pays you every time people thanks you... it will be so cool though...

It's more like the reputation you have by helping other people, most of the most thanked members are successful marketers. This doesn't mean they are millionaire (even though some of them must be).

Success is not measure by the amount of money you make... not for everyone at least.

On the other end of the spectrum, some people take them much too seriously. I've had 3 people scold me for thanking other posters in a thread and not thanking them ( two was on someone elses thread). Talk about silly. Those are people who put far too much weight on them (as if it meant money in the bank). Either that or they need therapy (or a hug).

I've always had the attitude if I give a 100 word answer with plenty of white space and killer links - and get no thanks. And someone else gives a 3 word cliched' answer and gets 5 thanks. That shouldn't bother me. If it does ... I gave my answer for the wrong reason - that reveals more about me and my motives than others. Note: Just speaking for me.

It means nothing of the sort. The two factors are completely independent of each other.

Firstly, it doesn't take that much time to build 1,000 thanks over a seven-year period (the "thanks" option began in 2008). And second, equating money earned with time spent is only applicable if you have no leverage in your business.

OK here's what I think, I look at warriors who have been thanked excessively as the kind of people who, in normal lives, are regarded as the go-to people...you head to them whenever you're in any kind of situation. you know, you won't get no for an answer from them unless it's something that's totally beyond their area of influence...even then, you will go and share your thoughts with them, in hope of getting some good advice...

that's how i see the warriors who've been thanked countless number of times on this forum...

while i don't believe it has anything to do with their ability to make more money, i do see them as being highly resourceful...naturally, if you've helped a lot of people in your life by going out of the way, you will end up making some very serious friendships with at least a few if not most of those people you've genuinely reached out for

but again, if you do go out of your way to help someone, i doubt it would be from the monetary perspective alone ...to say that would be to disregard all the good that remains of this world...

on a professional scale though, you could be lending advice/help pertaining to your area of expertise, n naturally, if people start trusting you as an authority, they would definitely keep you in mind when they have an important financial decision to make relating to your area of specialty...n chances are you might make good money out of it as well...

so here's my summary of it:

people who get thanked are great people : )
they may also be great marketers
    they are resourceful
they are the go-to people in our normal, everyday lives...
all of these traits naturally position them well for any capital gains that come in the way
but the financial gains are only a small part of the whole picture...

    : )

Thanks indicates the person's knowledge in the field..
and it need not be correlated with making money..
even people with less thanks had made great sum
of money than most people who had more thanks!

Make great post > many thanks > sig clicks > money (maybe).

Make great thread > many thanks > sig clicks > money (maybe).

    Padding posts > ....

No metrics here matter, 99% have agendas, many success stories and failures all trying to get noticed or stay relevant. I find most of the oldschool/bigger successes pop in once in a while out of familiarity because this was a part of our come up, and we brain dump here or help noobs/people that are plateaued where our experience makes sense to share.

Those still here x-xx years later posting daily my hat goes off to you I dunno how/why you're still doing it but everyone is different. I don't have time usually for this stuff, or facebook/social stuff and I like to keep a lowprofile now..

If you're trying to look for successful people here, well first off good luck sifting through the filters of false positives, and secondly it's not going to come from post count, thanks count, sig claims, or any other metric. It's going to come from keeping an eyebrow raised as you read through people's patterns once you're here long enough, and start to realize a bit of success of your own to compare against.

And yeah, KayKing For President if metrics mean anything .

Wow. I never expected these many replies
when I started this thread. Thanks for your replies.

I'm really glad that everyone agrees that
"There's no relation between number of times thanked
and how much money they make"

It's great to see a lot of "high thanked" warriors here
    sharing same opinion.

    Regards
