What makes a successful Internet Marketer?

What's up Forum!

I just wanted us to talk about what you feel makes a successful internet marketer...

These are a few of the bullet points I wanted to share...

Successful Internet Marketers are folks who do not settle, these guys are driven to make sure they stand out from the crowd and ensure that they follow their goals, and methods even though some folks may tell them something cannot be done or will not be successful.....as we all know in order to be successful we must fail several times because success is overcoming failure and all obstacles surrounding your goals and project.....in my humble opinion I believe that most folks who do not make it is because they quit to early - I'll admit I don't consider myself to be a successful marketer yet - but I am definitely on my way - I have already beat the statistics and I have made some $$ online and i think if folks understood that success if overcoming the constant failures we would have even more internet prodigies.

Successful Internet Marketers are Successful Business owners and in my opinion these folks are driven by achievement rather than becoming Rich overnight...These folks make sure they set high goals for themselves and are consistent in achieving the task.

Have you heard of the saying that says "If you always do what you always did you will always get what you always got? well this is true in IM and in all aspects of life...successful IM'ers repeat the process that made them successful in one project to ensure success on another, however, they do new things, and perhaps do what they are already accustomed do in a different and better way - its all research, consistency and study.

These are a few lines on my long list of what makes a successful Internet Marketer...let me know what you think.

Thanks!
Ruben Ricart

My keywords for success online are:
        Consistecy, creativity, focus, and dedication.
I'm currently working on all of them right now =P ( except creativity, which has always been in overdrive, hence not making me rich yet)

I agree with your keywords preben - I for one am not as far as I would like to be because in the beginning I lacked one of the most important factors which was consistency and focus - I juggled too many projects at once - this is why I feel I was so frustrated at the beginning of my IM career - but I think I beat the statistics - I made money, and I'm very passionate - that's another keyword that I think makes a successful marketer - PASSION.

    Hi Ruben,

Thanks for starting a thought provoking thread.

First you have to define success and that is done on an individual to individual basis.

Personally I could name you several Warriors I consider successful, (starting with Allen says) but that would be based on my criteria.

As you said in different ways successful IMers "stand out," I agree, however, there are people (I know some of them, but I doubt anyone here knows who I'm talking about) who want nothing more than not to stand out and as far as their goals go they focus on helping others reach their goals and are rewarded for that, working quietly behind the scenes, for peanuts compared to what their "stand out" clients get. The people I'm talking about, I consider to be sucessful.

How do I define success. Probably differently than most. That is not important, what is important to me is that I reach my definition of success in the next 10 or 15 years or the only successful thing I will have done, referring strictly to Internet Marketing will be to push up some virtual daisies.

    My best to you,

I agree! and when I posted this that thought did not come to mind.....
We all see success in different ways and success can manifest in different forms as well.

I guess I can say that I have been successful in one of my projects which was starting a Social Network that has grown to about 6,000 members or so..

I have been successful and in achieving the goal of that particular site...but overall I dont think I have achieved a comfortable level of success when comparing myself to other marketers that are making a living out of their business......

Would love to hear others thoughts on this post....

I define success as freedom and happiness.
I have completely erased my old mindset of making autopilot profits online and leave with it.

I have realized that I truly enjoy IM. It is one of my biggest hobbies.
I am extremely creative, and I get new, great ideas all of the time.

I list them, plan them and move on - Which is my biggest mistake. I need to DO things. - Because I also enjoy completing projects. Reaping the rewards, and feel well.

So what I need to do, is making enough money to be able to go through with my projects and ideas. That is my personal definition of success.

I agree with your ideas completely.

Furthermore, I would like to add that a successful internet marketer understands the concept of viewing failures as opportunities for improvement that eventually lead to working smarter instead of harder.

Too many people expect too much too quickly. Take the failures in stride and keep going

    Hi Ruben,

In my opinion success is the term for when you're truely happy with what you have and are not looking for something to fulfill you.

In the context of Internet Marketing, that can mean anything from creating your revenue goals by doing something you love, or knowing how you're helping people live happier lives by adopting practices that serve others at least as much as they serve you.

I recently had sometime tell me that they literally attributed their new house and marriage to advice I gave them about their IM business a couple of years ago over lunch in London - THAT made me feel more successful than any amount of money I've made for myself.

Well, I would sum up an attitude of an internet marketer in one word PERSISTANCE!

That it the key to persevere in this business, be persistant and consistant.

Just my thought on this matter.

I agree, I kind of associate all of these under one keyword which for me is passion...Im so thrilled about this business and I think its very helpful to see what others think a successful internet marketer is.....

so far I think Focus and Consistency are what most agree..

A successful internet marketer knows he/she cannot do it alone!

When you work 18 hour days (sometimes even longer) on a project or multiple projects at a time you are slowing yourself down.

You need to realize and take comfort in the fact that you need help. You need to find talented people with different strengths, bring them together and collaborate and accentuate each other.

Do this and very soon projects that took you weeks will take mere days with your newly fined tuned orchestra of talented partners.

        That's a great point.
Being unable, or really slow to do something just doesn't pay off in the end, unless you are really interested in that spesific thing.

For a looong time, I have been trying to do everything myself, but then I realized that I will have WAY more success ( as I define it) if I let go, and outsource what I'm unable to do.

For example graphics. I am a bit interested, but I know it needs a lot of work and training for me to produce satisfying results. - So I outsource it.
Same goes for articles/article rewriting if I need many. I'll outsource the ones I find "boring" or the ones that needs extensive research.

After all, I am the MARKETER. Not a writer, or graphics designer =P
I get the ideas, I plan them, research the market, and get people to do what I don't like doing myself.

I think that point is extremely important for people to remember, and a reason why someone are considered "Successful". You are the marketer.

My take on your question - successful internet marketers...

          1. Get pissed off when they work for someone else...largely unemployable, know they can do it better and they DO

          2. Idea people - they see opportunities within markets and they quickly move to test or capitalize on that idea

          3. Know what they are good at and what they are not...this one is tough and many of us are still wrestling with this one

          4. Leverage relationships and other people's time to get the job done effectively and professionally

          5. Like a good race car driver - they don't let their foot off the gas, even when they are in front of the pack

          6. Action oriented - have come to terms in their life with "failing" and have programmed themselves to look at "failing" as stepping stone to success
