Hello,

How do you keep calm when your internet marketing business slows down, nothing is going your way, and you feel like giving up on it altogether.

I normally just let lose my fuse in bad ways, but than I make things worse and end up looking stupid.

Its an endless cycle of frustration and sometimes I can't contain myself long enough.

It seems like the more I try to make full-time income in internet marketing the harder it is, like the clickbank screen laughs in my face and calls me a pathetic loser with nothing going for them.

to date, my clickbank bar won't budge.

I would love to see a day where I wake up with $100 in commissions.

But it looks like I lose $100 instead

/end rant
#calm
  • You just need to..

    1) Understand that everything is like the seasons. Sometimes it's better, sometimes it's worse.

    2) Fully believe that you can go back to (And go beyond) the level of success you had before

    3) Start doing. Debrief and see what worked before and do what works

Most people are not cut out for entrepreneurship.

It requires a great deal of patience, ability to withstand hardship, creativity to find new paths and the flexibility to actually pursue them.

A pattern of losing your cool and making things worse indicates that this might not be the right calling for you. I would consider trying something different.

I would say, hang in there. Maybe take a break. Have good time with friends. Sometimes, you only need time to gather all that up and let it sync in.

Give your mind some time to charge with new ideas to either support your current business strategies or just throw them completely into the garbage and start again.

Woa hold on a minute! Just leave it alone for a bit then when you are ready, come back. As has been said if this is your sole income or you are doing this after a hard day's work you may need to rethink your strategy.

Giving up is not the answer, if it was you would not have started this thread in the first place. Just read all the replies you have received. You should be blown away, I am. And look at the quality and experience of those people offering some help (self excluded), amazing.

Find something that you are passionate about to do with your life. And who knows, when you do, I'll bet you find your way back to business. The urge can be overpowering (I know it is for me).

        I wish you the best.

        (Added later...)

I notice so many anonymous people who try to be encouraging, urging you to keep at it. But they don't know you and the challenges you face. None of us do. You have to give this venture an honest assessment and do what is right for you. It sounds like beating your head into a wall is not something you have a burning desire for.

I would venture a guess that the ones who are the most encouraging are also the ones with the least experience with success. Success is not a thing to be owned. It is a process - a long, winding, bumpy process with lots of setbacks. Once you attain it, you have to hold on to it. Depending on the kind of business you run, that has varying levels of complexity. But IM (generally speaking) appeals to people because of the low barrier to entry. That same low barrier makes any success volatile, and the danger of losing it to the "next big thing" high.

If your heart is not in it, you will not make it. Your sense of determination and thirst for victory have to be higher than your distaste for risk and anxiety.

        Simple as that.

It's a decision you need to make - but posting it will only draw people into telling you "don't give up" ... "never give up".....and on and on.

Do a serious analysis of your mindset and your interests. If trying to work online is too stressful - move to doing something else.

It truly is NOT for everyone. My suggestion is you sit back and THINK about your capabilities, your stability and your attitude toward working online...and YOU make a decision to keep at it or not. Then either plug in and really work instead of going back and forth about it....or find something you enjoy doing offline.

Make a decision for yourself - and follow through on it. Don't let people talk you into or out of doing something you feel is right for you. I couldn't keep working in a business that stressed me out all the time....wouldn't be any fun.

I always wonder about the sheep who spit out that same mantra every time a thread like this comes up... So "Never Give Up", work at a loss and earn zilch for what 5-10-15 years, if you can survive that long until you realize "hey maybe i should have tried something else years ago"?...

There are many here who will never run a successful business or make a living online even if they tried for a 100 years, that's a simple cold hard fact...

But that's not to say they can have a successful career in another field, i just wish some people realize that sometimes giving up is the smart thing to do...

When I read, "How do you keep calm", my point of reference is when giving presentations. For my JOB (which I love) I often have to give high level presentations to executives and board for 100+ million dollar organizations. How do I keep calm? I think a few things, 1) I'm living my dreams, this is the moment I've been waiting for and 2) I think of my step dad who'se been in my life since I was 3..he worked 2 or 3 jobs at times, has health problems, went to work in pain for years, he goes into work and never complains. I think how "HArd" that was in comparison to what I was about to do.. just talk about stuff I love to talk about.

    That's how I keep calm

For business.. I'm fairly unemotional.. AFter the dreaming phase.. you know the first day when you think you're about to make a million dollars over night.. It hits me, I have not been "That lucky" yet, so I just focus on the execution of the project.. once it starts to slow down I just focus on the next project.

Project life cycle is probably like the dating life cycle lol.

Anyway, that's how I keep calm!

I don't. I don't think it's possible to be "calm" when you see a day that is 10x your average or, on the opposite end, a day near zero, especially when there are more of them in a short time.

The key is to not let it derail you from implementing your plan. We are humans and we have emotions. It is not the objective / it is not possible to completely remove your emotions. Instead you must learn to keep your emotions separate from your decision making and that is best done once you are able to recognize and accept your emotions at that particular moment.

      Some more practical tips:

      1) Go for a run.

      2) Watch your stats averaged over a longer period. It is more significant anyway. For example, the key revenue stats I watch are 7, 14, 28 days average (and then 13, 26, 52 weeks). There will still be fluctuations, but smaller.

      3) Keep a log and write down not only the work you have done each day, but also how you were feeling. You may use the log later to review and improve your processes, but merely the exercise of writing the log can relieve the stress. OK, I don't do this one very much.

      4) Use your feelings to your advantage. I have multiple projects and of course one day one project does better and next day another one... When I see a particularly strong day on one of my projects, I feel strong motivation to work on expanding that project right now, suddenly ideas start flowing and I'm "on". While sometimes I need to stick to my previously planned work, sometimes I choose to not fight it, change plans and spend the day working on the project that is "trending". The effect of strong positive motivation on your productivity can't be overestimated.

      5) Grow your profits Seriously, once your profits comfortably cover your living expenses and you stop worrying about paying rent and food and you stop (consciously or subconsciously) questioning your IM "career", the stress from low performing days will become much smaller.

      6) And finally:

This might sound silly, or at least some of this might, but it should help..

    1. Make sure you're getting enough sleep
    2. Make sure you're getting enough exercise, even if it's something simple like walking
    3. Review what you are doing, are you doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results?
    4. Network and see what others are doing and see if you can get ideas on what to change
    5. Utilize these forums, ask questions, read threads and try new things

When I started internet marketing full time, I had those days when I didn't wanted to to anything, or I just wanted to do something else. I thought that it is because the insecurity and fear of failure because the income was unstable. But that motivated me more to get to a stable and secure income. I let the new ideas to come, tried them and got there.

That is the point where the problems with concentration and motivation started. There are still good and bad days, but at the end of the month the paycheck is the same or bigger. I realized that the motivation does not have a lot to do with a bad or good day, but with what you said in your list: SLEEP, EXERCISE, Not trying new things.

The simple answer is that I don't keep my calm. If things are slowing down, I immediately look for new outlets for traffic, more ways I can monetize and more benefits I can give my clients. Then I dig down in research to see what others are doing so I can stay ahead of the competition....and then I implement those changes so I don't slow down any more.

Then I get calm, but only for a few minutes. Because being calm is not a business trait that drives success. If you want to build an empire, then you have to have a feeling of urgency in everything you do and never stop until you're either a billionaire or dead.

In other words, show me a calm business leader and I'll show you a person destined for bankruptcy court.

You know what, you are doing everything right....it's an inner attitude and what I mean by that is STOP TRYING SO HARD to make money and enjoy what you are doing. Learn more and keep going but the only thing holding you back is your attitude and it will keep you stuck there. You said that one day you would like to wake up an see $100.00 in commissions....then you have to muster that emotion and feeling and keep working at it. Also find fullfillment outside of 'work' and you will begin to have success when you apply these principles. Sounds airy fairy stuff but at the end of the day no one can block your sunshine but you.....and you will never stop learning....you will get there you just need to persist and persist with the right attitude...

I'm like some above - if things slow down...I have to pay attention, see what's happening and fix it or starting something new.

What the OP is doing is often over thinking and over analyzing and - my own term - "over emotionalizing" internet marketing.

Many of your threads are about how you feel about yourself - and how you need to stop "inconsistency and flakiness" - about your "fear of self employment"...etc. You ask about various methods but then seem to talk yourself out of them at the same time.

IM is not for everyone - that's the truth. The "aloneness" bugs some people - the stress of having to make every decision is something others can't deal with. Some people cannot take the pressure of not knowing when the next "payday" will come or worrying over whether the month's bills can be paid. This is not a "calm" business - I don't of any self employment that provides 'calm' most of the time.

Just focus on providing value dude, and the money will come.

Eben Pagen mentioned something in one of his programs once that really hit home. He said (paraphrasing BIG TIME here) something along the lines of...

If you want good health you focus on health. If you want good relationship, you focus on building good relationships. These work just fine. But if you want WEALTH, what do you focus on? Money, right? Wrong!

Eben goes on to explain that money doesn't really exist. Money is just a piece of paper that society gives value to. More-so nowadays, money is just numbers on your computer screen - numbers that society gives value to. If you want to buy a new car, you exchange some of those numbers for a car. Money doesn't really exist, but what DOES exist is value. What tends to happen is if you give people value, they give you value in return - in the form of money.

So rather than focus on making those green or grey clickbank bars get longer, focus on providing value. When you give value, those green bars will get longer.

Spend 30 to 60 minutes on waking doing stuff to feel good; meditate, exercise, visualize, stretch, yoga, etc, etc. Then, when stuff happens - as it will - you'll be less and less upset because you'll be in control of your mind. Case in point; I've been working on a potentially agitating situation for the past 3 to 4 hours. Should be a 5 minute deal. I remained calm, and poised, because I spend an hour after I wake up every day working on my mindset. When life intervenes - as it ALWAYS does lol - I am chill, relaxed and not too upset at all over outcomes, mishaps, roadblocks and all that stuff.

And when I do blow my top - which is rarely - it's done with in seconds. Or minutes hahahaha.....

    Hi Zodiax,

Yip, affiliate marketing can be frustrating, I have had periods when things have not gone as expected for one reason or another. I learnt some years ago that I was putting in too much time trying to work out why it hadn’t happened the way I thought it would.
After a short period of time I then realised that I was getting even more frustrated trying to work out why, this was only adding to the situation. In my case I realised that I had prioritised things incorrectly, I held my expectations very high on the priority list and when things did not turn out as I expected I ended up putting to much time into trying to find out why.
Instead I reorganised, I decided that I needed to come up with some ideas on how I could for example increase traffic, especially target traffic, so I would put my frustration to one side and make traffic my top priority.
Once I began to get to where I expected to be or it looked like I would get there over time I would then spend time analysing where I had gone wrong initially, what did I need to improve to make it work, the problem I had was that I tended to over analyse and get deeper and deeper into what I was finding when in reality I never needed to spend as much time on this in the first place..
Controlling frustration isn’t easy, the only method I have in my arsenal is to stick at something that shows an improvement and it tends to elevate the frustration and I move onto the next strategy/project.

(I think the comment two posts above by King Kay relating to ""aloneness" is an excellent comment and not often considered or not taken into consideration enough.)

By remembering that all of the above is simply part of the process of becoming successful. Many people have had to go through the same to get to where they are today.

"The greater the struggle, the greater the success."
    : )

Although it's not a prerequisite for success, something that keeps me calm is knowing that I can be successful ... (No matter what happens.) Sure, I may have to face some temporary defeat (and even some "failure") however that's all part of the journey (IMO).

Hey Zodiax, I definitely know how you feel. Some days are slow, and sometimes it gets so bad that you feel like giving up. It's an everyday struggle, but you just have to be in the right mindset. I know that sounds cliche, but if you keep thinking you're not going to make anything, it's bound to happen eventually.

Finding a good mentor is also key to building up your confidence in affiliate marketing. If you find a good mentor, then you will be reminded everyday that you CAN do this. Motivation, determination, and hustle.

It can be difficult, no one really tells you how to make money, so you really have to look at your options and figure it out yourself. That can be the toughest part. But once you find a niche, it can become easier.

It happens to everyone in any business. There will always be ups and downs. I am already prepared for this by accepting that these things happen. When I am down, I go to my mentors and seek for guidance and inspiration then I gather my energy and keep working with the end result on mind.

I think a very important question needs to be answered here, first:

Do you have a day job, or are you relying on this as your sole source of income?

    1. If this is your sole source of income right now and you're panicking and getting frustrated because you're not making enough to get by, that's understandable. If that's the case, you should get a regular job for the time being and focus on IM as a hobby until you understand how to make things work for you, start making money and can commit to it full-time.

    2. If you DO have a regular job, but are still getting frustrated in your IM career to the point that it's causing you to make poor business decisions – then as others have pointed out, it may not be for you. Running a business takes a very specific mindset and it's OK to realize that you may not be suited for it. There's no shame in that. It's better to realize that you're not cut out for it, than to keep trying when you don't have the patience and continue making bad decisions out of anger and frustration.

P.S. - I'd suggest spending at least 3-6 months on a site before you call something a failure, depending on how competitive your niche is. If you chose something super competitive, it can take longer than that to start seeing results. If you don't have the patience to commit for that long, I'll stand by my "it may not be for you" sentiment. However, if you can find the will to stay committed, focus on creating quality content for your site and helping your audience solve problems. Giving real help will bring you repeat and loyal visitors in the long run.

    Cheers,
    Jen

      Good point, Jennifer. : )

However I think it's important that (for people who are struggling) that they don't let that become something of a "limiting belief."

It's perfectly fine to be filled with doubt and uncertainty, in fact, that's when true commitment really shines: To keep taking action and keep persevering even when things aren't going your way and you feel like giving up ...That's what separates the "winners" from the "losers" (in terms of those who succeed at IM).

I agree, Jonathan. I only say this because Zodiax implied he is losing money due to bad decision-making with the whole "instead I lose $100" comment. If that was just figurative and he's not actually losing money, I encourage him to keep going.

Once you start getting to the point that your impatience and frustration is causing you to hemorrhage money with nothing in return, there's a serious problem there. That's when I'd suggest that people take a step back and ask themselves if IM is really right for them.

You can't make business decisions out of frustration - and repeatedly at that. If you do, you'll dig yourself a hole faster than you can blink.

    /end rant
I can totally understand and relate to what you are experiencing right now.

It is exactly what I felt before making my first $50 as Amazon commissions (I had only 'started' affiliate marketing and I waited 8 months to see some results. On the 9th month, I made some bucks - $50 in total. But, I sold 3 books only).

The only 'change' I did to get my first sales was that I 'designed' the Amazon testimonials in such a way which looked more enticing and contacted maybe around 100+ buyers of the same book (don't remember the figure but it should be more than 100) to be kind enough to share their headshot photos so that I can put them on my website to promote the book they bought.

Bold move? Yes it was, especially as a starter. Only 2 replied back and just were really excited to be 'featured' on a website... lol!

Then after few more sales, I felt more 'courageous'. I went on to learn how I can cloak my affiliate link in a way so that no one knows that I'm selling them something. I bought an online software which does so and yes I re-invested and there was no profit that month (i.e. the 10th month).

Since I am constantly in touch with mommy bloggers, I just shared my affiliate link to these women and from there, I made my first $250 in 10 days. Only 8 people bought the book, the rest of them bought stuff which I didn't even understand like what was the purpose of that damn thing. Let alone promoting it.

Anyways, the point of sharing this experience is to think out-of-the-box. If you get confused too quickly, write some out-of-the-box ways to promote your product on a piece of paper. I repeat - write the points down 'on a piece of paper'. This helps to get your eyes off your computer screen and close those hundreds of tabs searching for 'solution posts'. You would need only a pen (I prefer pencil) and paper to simply think and analyze ways that would help your business.

Hope this helps in any way.

    Sana.

Its one trait I developed over the years. Started IM back in 2008 and still growing till now. I learned about The Secret: Law of attraction. I know a lot will tell it a hype or shit but the hell its the most useful tool Ive ever encountered and it works. Use and apply it, then you'll be able to achieve your cool. I know there's some bad things about it BUT you can always take all the positives and throw all the trash away right?

2nd if you cant still do it, then having your own business maybe is not cut for you. Hard ways is one of the paths of being a successful businessman, Patience is one of your greatest tools. If you don't have this 2 then its better to pursue your dream money by working and getting high positions in someone else successful company.

Different people have given different advice on this thread. What I feel is that it is easier said than done. The advice given by many of the folks might work in the long run if you stick to doing them consistently but in the short term it would feel as if the advice is not working.

Time is the best healer. Take your time to get over this. If needed, take a break from all this stuff for some time (even a long time if needed) and come back with a fresh mind and fresh energy and new ideas. Do not come back to it while you are still feeling some effects of the previous loss. Try to get your mind completely clear and if you feel the energy and enthusiasm return, then come back and start analyzing what went wrong and what you can do differently. Try to learn from successful people.

In the meantime, as you are relaxing and taking a break from starting any new IM ventures, try to learn from the masters, the experts and the successful people. Try reading their blogs, their newsletters, their reports, watch their videos or listen to their podcasts. Learning new stuff can not only help in improving your mindset and getting new ideas, it can also help you overcome your feelings of loss and frustration sooner than otherwise.

    Very great question...

Not being calm is one of the obstacles of internet marketing.

Not giving up is one another obstacle in internet marketing.

Everyone can make money online right? But what's the catch?

It's the above two statements.....remember it's inevitable...and giving up will be the cause of not succeeding.

Just be patient... sit down...re organize your goals....then work at it again!

Think of how far you would be 6 years from now?

Acknowledge this will ALWAYS happen...and you just have to give yourself a break...let it pass..get motivated again..get organized...and keep LONG TERM GOALS.

If money is the issue...start smaller..... if something isn't working redo it in a better way or choose a different route...If your method isn't working....keep learning to implement it better....you can choose a way where you won't loose money too remember...only spend what your willing to lose if your going to put in big money.

I'm quite sure that during your struggles in IM you amassed a large amount of knowledge. It might be a good idea to think about creating your own product to sell, instead of continuing the frustration with stuff you are trying now.

I find taking action to solve my problem always calms me down, especially if i take a new direction. For you this may well be creating your first product and sharing your experience with this hungry market and building a list of buyers, who will help increase your CB income later.

    Hope this helps

      Are you for real?

      A) The OP is in this spot because he can't figure out how to sell online
      B) Your suggestion is for him to create a product to help others sell online
      C) Then he should try to... (wait for it)... sell it online

This is a perfect example of how ludicrous this forum can be.

Like others have mentioned, I'd just take a break from IM for awhile and read some personal development books, get plenty of exercise, and think about what you really want for yourself.

I can relate to wanting to give up (many of us can) because we've all experienced failures or things not working, especially when just starting out. But one of the great obstacles of IM is the giving up. I've felt like giving up many times but I always came back to it because I found that I like it and think that making a single dollar online is fun (once you've made your first dollar).

Like Tom Hanks says in the movie, A League of Their Own, and pertaining to IM, "...It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everybody would do it. It's the "hard" that makes it great."

Not everyone can do IM. Besides, most people I know don't even believe its possible to make any kind of money online at all. So a lot of this is based on your belief systems about what you're trying to do. What do you really believe? If you don't believe that you can do it, then you certainly will not.
If you believe that its possible and that you can do it too, then your chances of any kind of success has just gone up tremendously - and giving up will not even be an option.

You just need more time to figure out what you want to do and what method(s) will work best for you. Most times you will need to fail in order to figure this out. But giving up is not an option, unless of course, IM just isn't the right thing for you at all.

But whatever you choose to do, giving up will only send you back to square 1 with something else. Just my 2 cents...

    Hey, don't give up!

What I do is, if you like playing games, go ahead and play some of your favourite games, for me, it helps me take my mind off the stress, do whatever makes you happy and distracts you from the unhappiness for awhile.

After that, think long and hard about what went wrong. Is it the offers? Is the niche not working as you planned it to be, could there be another way? The angle?

If nothing still works for you, try ANOTHER method. In my case, I lost about $400 when I started on search traffic, it really sucked for me, I was close to giving up. Then I found this forum, researched a bit on PPV and other traffic sources and made it back from the abyss.

Keep grinding sir, the pot of gold is always just around the corner!
