Wordpress.org - Please remind me

Sorry guys, I have been putting so much of my time and energy into writing my content (6700 words done) I have totally forgotten how to use self hosted wordpress.

Do I just need to set up my account and then build the page on the wordpress website then extract it up to my domain and web hosting?

Any pointers / how to guides links would be much appreciated.

I only need another 3 hard hours to finish off a couple of articles and then maybe 2 more to proof read and edit.

wordpress.org is used only to download it and install on your own domain and server. If you want host for free you should use wordpress.com

If you have your own domain and hosting, you just need to create dabatase and user, upload and extract wordpress, after type you domain adress and folow instructions. Very simple.

I suggest you go to YouTube and enter some focused search terms. You will get many instructional videos to watch.

Most hosts have a script like Fantastico or Softaculous that you access from your control panel.. Use the script to install wordpress. Be sure to enter your email so it sends you your password in case you forget. If the script defaults to a silly username like 'admin' then go into users from wordpress dashboard |users and add a new administrative user. Double check that it works in another browser. Now change the admin rights from 'admin' to 'user or subscriber'. Pick a theme and start adding content.

Once you've got your domain and hosting, you can install WordPress straight from Cpanel. Most hosting companies offer this now - and if they don't have Cpanel with Fantastico or Softalicilous, they generally have their own proprietary control panel with a button to install WordPress and other popular, open source programs. You don't usually have to bother going to wordpress.org, downloading the software and setting it up manually anymore.

So all I need to do is register with wordpress.org?

Do you know if my wordpress.com (the free one) will work on.org?

Or would I need a new account?

You don't need to register with wordpress.org. The best way for a newbie to begin their Wordpress journey involves simply buying a domain name from somewhere such as NameCheap, then opening a hosting account at a hosting company NOT part of the Endurance International Group. Don't touch any of them.

Just make sure the company you choose has cPanel, then you will be able to instal WordPress directly using either Fantastico or Softalicilous.

Update your nameservers with NameCheap (they have good instructions as well as a video) and you're ready to go.

Wordpress Codex will also provide you with a great deal of documented guidance and help.
