Why do most people fail online?

I woke up this morning and I was thought to myself for a long time about the most common reasons why so many people fail online. I thought that the most common reasons are:

1. Lack of faith and belief- When I started learning about how to make money online, I will admit I was very sceptical and weary about the whole idea. I guess that is how a lot of other people think that online success is not possible because all their lives they hved worked a 9-5 or worked for money by some other physical means. Too them making money online is a foreign idea, an alien idea which is too good to be true.

2.Failing to invest in your education- So many people want to do things on their own. For example I knew this guy who wanted to make money online and decided to make a website on Guava trees! Problem with that is like reason number 1 , there are not a lot of products about Guava trees to sale. So this is why a lot of people fail. They fail to learn the right way on how to do things with all the bad information, products and scams out there.

3.Failing to choose the right niche- A lot of people will immediately start to make a website or start building an email list based on what they think will work for them instead of doing the research first. You see doing a lot of research and finding out whether your niche is profitable

4.Giving up to early- We are all familiar with this one. So many people are chasing get rich quick schemes and overnight success with a push of the button. Unfortunately many people fall to a lot of bad information out there, and give up too soon when they do not see a Clickbank sale a day after they put their site up. Very few online marketers make fortunes overnight. Online success requires following a formula other successful markers have used and making mistakes until you become a master of that formula. But many give up to early before they even find out. A great way to keep me going is to always think that success is very near when we are just about to give up.

In my opinion if you want to make money online and succeed, it all begins in the mindset. If you have a vision of what you want, believe in it, invest in you education and immediately take action and make mistakes then there is no stopping you from doing and achieve whatever goals you want to achieve.

Why do you think most people fail online?

I vote for #3 hands down (he, he - what did you expect "me" to say).

But a close number 2 is Wrong Approach. - meaning most people who jump into online marketing approach it as a "money making opportunity"
    as opposed to a "Business".

So, when business related problems sock them in the face (like a Floyd Mayweather jab ) they stumble, stall-out or sink.

I truly think people fail mainly because they do not have the right mindset to begin with.

It all seems glamorous and easy money when you see some of the 'dreams' that are sold by snake oil salesmen in here

The charlatans fail to tell the unsuspecting newbie that building an online business will be very tedious at times and that you must learn to appreciate this and embrace it

      Yes so true.

I bet most of the people starting out in here cannot tell you the difference between an Income Statement and a Balance Sheet.

he, he ... nor do most Internet marketers care. In fact I don't ever recall seeing or hearing any Gurus ever mention balance sheet or income statement in any of their "All You Need To Know " courses. So, the quiet message most newbies hear is ...
        - You Don't really need to know about accounting (that much).
        - It's not a top priority to know about accounting.
        or
        - You can learn that stuff later or it's optional.

I don't ever recall a newbie asking an accounting related question on this forum. If I did I would probably faint. Probably one more reason among many why the failure rate stays so high. Let a brick and mortar "business" try that. But then again if you don't look at your I.M as a business ( but just a money making opportunity) why should you worry about balance sheets and financial statements?

I feel like most people that enter the IM field expect fast and instant results, and when they don't get that, they simply give up.

It takes a lot of hard work for the most part to get started at the beginning. You also need a bit of luck to come your way as well. I'm currently making around $1000-1100 a month via Adsense with two sites that I bought at a very good deal, but I sort of got lucky that I ran into a seller who needed funds.

All of these reasons are flawed.

    1. Faith and belief sound nice, but are irrelevant. I could believe I'll sell a million Flying Spaghetti Monster bumper stickers with all the faith I can muster, but without the right tools, preparation and research I'll fail.

    2) Investment in education is deceptive. You don't need to invest anything but your focus. The information is flying all around us. Learning it is free. Isolating the quality information is challenging, and applying it is something else entirely. Newbies cannot be expected to understand this intuitively.

    3) Choosing a niche is nice, but it is an advanced concept. The abuse of this concept is what leads so many people down the road to oblivion. When you are new to business you don't need niche research. You need to identify problems you can solve for other human beings, and sell them those solutions. Finding a niche you know nothing about exacerbates the problem of too many crappy web businesses selling crappy products out there.

    4) Giving up early can be a good thing. When something isn't working, you need to identify it, analyze what went wrong, and if necessary, cut your losses. Knowing when to fold it up is a learned skill, and newbies are not going to have the experience or judgment to recognize when it is the best solution.

I don't mean to be a downer, but it is generic, vague rah rah posts like this that make so many people think they can do this when they are ill equipped to run a business - any kind of business. The people going up in flames all around us every day are a testament to that.

Let me put it another way... anyone can read this post, check off all the boxes, put a sincere effort into it following every happy thought, and still most will fail.

Want to know why so many people fail online? Because they are led to believe there is a vast market for mediocrity out there, and they feel they can serve that market without any of the tools a real business owner with skin in the game would be forced to utilize.

        Touche.

But it does bear noting that this definition is not necessarily in lockstep with the common perception of niche research, particularly as sold to new marketers.

In my experience, online and off, very few people genuinely succeed at being in business for themselves. Personally, I don't see any shame in that - kudos for those who at least tried.

Business is all about management - planning, executing, analyzing, adapting and repeating the process over and over. Diversifying assets, experimenting, identifying and improving weaknesses and exploiting strengths, along with consistency, patience and a lot of hard work play a role as well.

If it were easy, everyone would be an Internet Millionaire.

Unfortunately, so many people get sucked into the idea that they can make millions on autopilot, they fail right out of the gate, spending more money than they'll ever make, having nothing to show for their effort other than a large pile of debt.

The good news is that it is possible to make money online, given time and effort and I do know a lot of people who make a decent living at it. But, they focused on developing one idea at a time, not giving up, and then expanding on what they achieved incrementally.

Forget WSO's, forget the Get Rich Quick schemes and focus on building a REAL business that will still be generating revenue for you 20 years from now.

I think focusing on one idea at a time is really key. It's too easy to get caught up in Shiny Object Syndrome and run off to the next idea before you've given the first one sufficient time and effort.

    Hi,
Indeed the biggest issue is Mindset problems
People need of course courses to learn how a business works and how to do it - but then the mind takes over in connecting with people - Many people not understand they project their thoughts to the outside world and when those thoughts filled with negative charged thoughts this is what is coming back in results

For many people who start out this seems nonsens, but for experience people its not as they became aware of it in the years of working on their own business. I still believe that it helps alot to get the book of napoleon hill think and grow rich and read it day in and day out, non stop till one understands the messages and finds the secret of success = also watching videos on motivation speakers like bob proctor or other amazing people will surely help to improve the mind and use positive thoughts towards the goal and success in business

And the hardest one is to have a 100% commitment and FAITH it will appear no matter what happens - not many get the big hit directly - its almost like a test on Faith before we get rewarded for the work we did exercising this Mind

But that is what I believe and happened to me when I saw success after time

    leo

I think the most common reason people fail is because most people starting out have the mistaken notion that working online is all about working in your pajamas, working little hours, and just putting up some sort of online mall and POOF, money starts rolling in.

The reality is you have to work hard or even harder than a traditional brick and mortar business due to extremely high competition, being perceived as a scam, and also the super high potential of getting scammed yourself.

Based on my experience and from lurking on here for quite some time, most people fail because they start a website and are extremely surprised they can't make $10, 000 within a week. IM isn't really a get rich quick scheme. If you want the money, you need to put in the work.

I also think a lot of people are distracted by so many bogus offers promising kingly returns in less than an hour and keep jumping from each one to the next and wasting money instead of just picking one thing, learning it and working it till you master it....

People fail online for several reason. What you need to ask is what does it take to be successful on line.
I'll give you the steps to success right here.
    1- find a mentor/ coach
2- stick with one of three niches (make money, weight loss, Heath care)
3- build a list of buyers not freebie seekers
4- build a realtionship of trust and value with your list.
5- stick with one area of marketing till you master it.
    That's it my friend.

Most people fail online because they don't have a business plan that works. They are also too become too easily sucked into random ideas presented to them by 'gurus' that promise quick money, but deliver very little, and certainly not a sustainable business.

Success is 100% guaranteed if you're willing to keep taking action until you reach your goal(s). That's not to say that some people won't find running a successful website/business easier than others however I believe that absolutely anyone can be successful online providing that they're willing to do whatever it takes.

I think there would be a lot less failures if newbies swallowed their pride and worked with a mentor from the start. There are mentors in all niches. They charge fees for their coaching, but the amount you pay is peanuts compared to what you could make by following their advice.
When I started I thought I knew it all and would soon be making money online. I was wrong.
It took a while, but I finally realized I wasn't going to get anywhere without a mentor, someone to tell me what to do, and show me how to do it.
    Keep smiling!

Don't want to sound negative but a marketer competing with super websites is a uphill battle at best. If you don't find a untapped niche it is pretty bleak. Not saying it can't be done but its going to be long and hard. It seems like the best thing would be work together and make sure everyone gets paid.

You had me right up until this one. Not exactly sure what you mean here, but it sounds like you are giving yourself permission to condition your success on the support of others.

Don't do that. Instead, figure out how you are going to make your mark on the world, then do it.

Of course it can be done. The world is full of untapped niches, unexplored ideas, unrealized inspirations. Give me a truly unique selling position any day of the week over becoming the next amazon, and I'll take it.

You are way more experienced with IM than me but as a observer it seems like the people making money are the ones who own platforms where others meet and do business. Whether it is Amazon or dating sites the platform makes money. So IM's would be no different.

Some people give up in frustration after starting on ebay - one of the easiest places online to make money with. They know that starting their own website is a daunting task, and when they hear the words "Search Engine Optimization", they give up instantly. And they continue thinking this way for years. Some people repeat this process over and over again.

There are many reasons, but for me it's the wrong information, really. It starts from there. If newbies have that wrong information that overnight riches eith minimsl work are real, they quit when they see nothing in their bank account. If they have the wrong information on how to identify a market, make money, gaib traffic and bild a list, their efforts will be all for naught. You can work hatd all you want but you better equip yourself with the right information and right mindset to succeed at anything. Internet marketing is all about being smart.

Because business is for Gladiators only. Many people are not willing to become the type of person they have to become in order to succeed.

They are not willing to do the work that is necessary. They are looking for the easy, effortless way to riches. Once they realize how much work is REALLY required to succeed they quit. And the truth is, they should quit.

I think they fail to realise that online business is no different than offline business - you need your own offers/products, your list of customers, and lots of general business knowledge.

Not to mention the very hard work you need to put in, consistently. As Seth Godin says - you need to show up, and you need to ship.

    People fail due to:

    - unrealistic expectations.
    - Belief that if they have a laptop, easy money is almost a guarantee.
    - Not having a team to help fill in the gaps in areas where they are lacking.
    - Not having clear goals, and a sufficient game plan to achieve them.

Nice. In my opinion, point 4 is why 99% are failed.

    Hey Dave,

I agree.. I feel that this is very useful and beneficial for people to understand why they are failing online. One of my favorite factors that you mentioned is "Lack of Faith and Belief"

I think that the reason that a lot of people lack faith and belief is because they probably have tried making money online and never succeeded, so they lack confidence in themselves...which is totally natural by the way.

One of the key factors of succeeding online is Developing Our Mindset We can do this by reprogramming our mindsets for success. Forget about the T.V. Instead of waking up and watching the news, listen to a positive audio full of motivation and inspiration. Read a good book everyday for 30 minutes. Books that I have read are "Think and Grow Rich", "The Four Hour Work Week", "The Science Of Getting Rich and many others. You can also watch motivational videos on Youtube by leaders like Les Brown, Jim Rohn, Tony Robbins, etc. If you don't like to read, there is also audio books on youtube. The point is that people need to understand that their past does not equal their future, and no matter what their current situation is, they can succeed if they can just take apply Personal Development to their daily activity.

As for Lack of Investment you are absolutely right on point! People need to understand that they don't know it all. It's funny because once people join a program, they want instant gratification. They want to make money online right away, but they need to understand they it takes money to make money. Only money conscience people make money. People are willing to invest in things that are completely useless to them, but are not willing to invest for the growth of their financial future. It's mind boggling to me. I am a huge fan of informational products because a lot of products are provided by people who are top earners, experts and people who have succeeded. If you want to make money online, you need the proper training and strategies to do so.

They don't know their target market or audience- "When you are marketing to everyone you are marketing to no one" It's CRUCIAL to know WHOyou are marketing to, know what their needs, desires and wants are, and where to find them. Once you do find them...PROVIDE VALUE to your audience.

It's amazing to me how people will go to the University for 4 years and get theirdegree, but once they join an online business, and don't see results in the time they want to see them....THEY QUITJust like any offline business, it takes time to build it. If they don't see results, they hop on to the next thing. Being consistent and taking daily action for the growth of your online business will eventually pay off...just DON'T GIVE UP

    Why people fail online?
    Lack of belief
    Lack of training
They don't know their target market
They don't have enough leads or people to talk to
They don't have a daily or weekly income to leverage marketing costs
    They Give Up

I think you're right on the money about people giving up too early. For anyone reading, it's HIGHLY unlikely you're going to get rich overnight. This happens to maybe 1 in every 300 MILLION people. I consider making money online "Easy" in the sense that it isn't manual labor...but it's also HARD and TIME CONSUMING (at least in the beginning). Be prepared to invest a lot of time and money in the beginning learning the ropes. Once you find something that works, stick with it. Again, if you go into this with the expectation of getting rich overnight then you'll almost certainly be disappointed, in which time, you'll probably give up (which isn't good). Instead, focus on learning, growing, enjoying the process, and eventually you will succeed. Rant DONE.

I would add stubbornness and laziness to the list.
Stubbornness - because sometimes, some people refuse to listen! Thinking you know everything doesn't mean you actually do.
Laziness - because if you don't make an effort to continue to learn, you'll just be stuck with what you know and the others will wave as they pass you by!

I would add one more point to his list:

    5. Expectations that are too high - Most of the times people think they can earn money overnight. I think it's the problem with a consumers culture, expecting money fast but not working hard enough. There is a quote saying ''Don't work hard, work smart'', which I think can't be more wrong and it perfectly proves the point in this case.

Ah, actually you should be doing both. Working hard ...at Working Smart. Most people just stress doing one or the other and miss the double-barrel advantage of doing both at the same time.

Most people don't have good enough guidance to have success quickly, and learning on your own takes a lot of time and determination. It's very hard to build a business.
