How to build a list outside of the IM niche

Greetings, everyone.

I've been in the IM niche for a while and know a decent bit about list building in that space. However, now I'm in a niche outside of the IM space. It's a sub niche of health & fitness.

Any great ideas on how to build a good list?

Thanks much,

Brian Sloan

You are building a list of potential customers..in your new niche, know their problem and create a capture page offering them a free gift relating to solving the problem..they opt-in and follow them up with emails..

B, create value targeted to your audience to grow your list. Value draws in subscribers. Not sure of your health and fitness sub niche, but make their dreams come true by solving their problems, through your blog post, videos, podcasts and eBooks. Post opt in forms to your blog and of course, toss in a squeeze page here and there to collect emails if you wish to go that route, to give away your free, valued stuff.

Independent of niche the value thing works well., Perfectly, really.

I'm in the blogging niche. I give away my free, 6,000 word, free eBook/blog post each week plus I give away my free podcast and I also sell an eBook weekly too, the one that I published for that week. I entice folks to offer their email address for all of the value that I'm giving to grow my list pronto. On a side note, that niche rocks. You'll have no end of problems to solve, with the obesity epidemic and I know you'll share that value through so many channels. Build that list by giving away valuable, free stuff, and you'll see that the sky really is the limit, as far as list building goes.

Create value. Become valuable. Boost your subscriber count.

If I were you I would contribute content to blogs and websites that focus on the same sub-niche you're targeting.

If you contribute high quality content, chances are you would get a lot of direct traffic to your link which should go to a page that convinces people to click on a link to go to your squeeze page.

Don’t link your squeeze page directly.

It reduces the probability that people would publish your guest post.

Instead, your link should lead to more information that convinces people to get into an ongoing conversation with you.

This ongoing conversation of course is your mailing list.

That’s how you play the game.

The best type of guest posts are infographics or case studies.

These types of content show the user that you know what you’re talking about.

    They establish credibility very quickly.

Also you can get your brand out there more easily with these types of posts.

You can try regular articles but those are a crapshoot.

Some situations they may work and other situations they don’t work at all.

Even in situations where they work, you will probably get better results if your try other methods.

  • Hi Brian

With your experience, I'd suggest you probably already have all the answers yourself. The process of list building is going to be basically the same whatever the niche, so the majority of the methods you used for the IM niche should work equally as well within in any niche. Boring but true

All the best with your online adventures

I tend to agree; list building principles and successes should hold true over multiple niches and markets.

The thing you'll find about non-IM markets is that the prospects tend to be less informed about the whole "list building" purpose and about the various tactics and strategies that marketers employ. Often, I find it is easier to get opt-ins in non-IM markets probably because these prospects aren't bombarded with opt-in requests at every turn as in the IM space.

Two suggestions about list building that are lost on many IMers: be creative and relevant in the niche. Stand out, separate yourself from all your competitors and try some things that are truly different and creative. And always remember to provide focused and relevant - to - the - niche info and analysis . . . stay on topic!

Paid ads, giving you the ability to do it quickly.

Bing is definitely a good spot.

You can also do media buys and solo ads.

    Hey Brian,
Definitely you might be a little more particular as far as running promos with your emails.

I do not do it as much as my List in MMO niche.

And the frequency should be less, imo.

People in MMO niche expect to get emails often. Even everyday.

People in niches like health and fitness will get turned of much quicker if you have high frequency, from my experience
