Just how important are Emails in IM?

I see everywhere links asking for emails and we'll send you this and that for free etc.. Even some sites that just have a email box claiming you can make lots of money and they'll send you a guide how to do it. Can you seriously make a lot of money by just collecting emails? What do they do with them?

Emails are probably the most important thing in IM. They are probably the best way to make long term money. You can do several things with your email list including sending them affiliate offers, offering to send the affiliate offers of someone else for a fee, or even sell the entire list to someone else. Just make sure the list you build are all interested in the same types of products (i.e. your niche,) and you will be able to make money off that list.

Is there a way to organize people who sign up from a particular one of my websites into a certain list that I can categorize?

Yes absolutely. You can create as many targeted lists as you'd like. It's as simple as creating a new list in your email service provider, and name it for that list. So if it's for your cooking blog for example, you can call the list "Seth's Cooking List" and capture e-mails specifically for that list.

Furthermore, you can create custom follow-up series for each individual list, so if someone signs up for your cooking list on your blog, you might send them 5-7 days of pre-written e-mails with some cooking tips, recipes, etc.

Then on another list you have, say in the sports niche, you will create a completely separate list and follow-up series. I know a few niche marketers who do it this way.

Yeah, you can set up different campaigns in your autoresponder based on which site people signed up from.

The reason why email is so powerful is because it enables you to reach people whenever you want, and send them whatever you want. This is in stark contrast to the typical behavior of website visitors: they come and go whenever they wish, and read whatever they wish. What happens if a visitor doesn't return because they've forgotten your website address? That's right, you lose their business.

But with email marketing, you can nudge them into coming back to your website, or you can just send them the content right into their inbox. Plus, you get to send them the content in the order you want, so you can maximize profits. Now you control when and how often they get in contact with you and your offers. Now you can stand to make a whole lot more money.

Regarding why everyone gives away free stuff, it's simple: it's a "bribe" to get them to hand you over their email address. It increases the chances of them signing-up, so therefore the list of your emails.

Having a well build buyers list is the life blood of IM. Products come and go but if you build a relationship with your list you can sell them just about anything and bank on it.

Very important , keep in mind you can still Make money without doing this, but this is normally much better.

Look up list building to get an idea of the potential of this and to find out what others are doing.

I think I understand where the thread starter is coming from.

It seems that there are just so many email squeeze pages scattered all over the Internet.

It seems that everybody is fixated on getting everybody else's email.

There seems to be a lot of saturation out there.

It's too easy to get jaded and skeptical as to whether these email lists actually make money.

Well, let me remind you as to what is actually happening when people sign up for your list.

When you get somebody to sign up for your mailing list, they're essentially giving you information to develop a business relationship with them.

They're giving you permission to talk to them regarding a particular set of topics.

    This is a tremendous opportunity.

Compare this with trying to beat down the front door with ads and getting them to listen to you.

Instead, you're starting off at a far superior position.

You are at a stage where this person is giving you permission to essentially convince them.

The best way to do this of course is to send credible information that establishes you as an authority.

In short, your mailing list exists to build trust in the eyes of your prospects.

The more trust your list generates, the higher the likelihood your list members will convert.

Not only would they convert on one offer, but if they trust you enough, they can convert again and again on different offers you send to your list.

Put simply, your list is a passive income asset.

What I mean by that is you only work once to build your list.

However, you can reap sales and conversions from each member for a long time to come.

    It beats working a job.

When you work at a job, you show up for one day, put in one day's worth of work, and you get paid for one day.

If you don't show up for work the next day, you don't get paid.

With a mailing list, you create a digital asset where you work only once to create the list, and then the list generates income for a long time to come.

Which position would you rather be in?

Emails and building a list are quite important in IM. And if you know how to relate with and gain your subscriber's trust, you can indeed earn money from it. You start off by building your list, send these people emails with information, tips, advice, funny stuff..... you name it! It all depends on your niche and on your approach. And once you establish a relationship with your subscribers, you go ahead and try to convert them into buyers. It takes a while, but if you play your cards right it's worth it.

Email Marketing should be the number 1 priority if you're an internet business, you can have all the websites you want, social networks whatever, but the best way an online business owner can communicate directly with a potential customer or customers is through email. Not everyone visit too many websites, social networks, but many people use email like a phone ! Also its a fact that a web visitor takes around 5-7 before making a buying decision. If someone come to your site first time and they leave, how you're going to get them back, through email. Also email is the "secret" tool GURUS use to make thousands in minutes!

Talk for yourself. Plenty of people still prefer reading. Actually, most of them.

Also, if reading was obsolete, then we wouldn't have newspapers anymore, just YouTube and other video services.

This thread highlights the main attitude of the forum.

Yes, there's money to be made from keeping an active list, but it should not be the focus of your business. I think it's dangerous for newcomers to try and jump straight for email marketing as their sole source of income - Like many try, and even more suggest.

What they don't tell you, is that most people are only interacting with a small portion of their overall list. I see a lot of people only getting 2-5% open rates, especially in the MMO niche.

You still have to put the work in - optimizing, testing, writing copy, segmenting, building products to sell. It's not as easy as hitting "send" if you really want to be successful.

Consider this fact - I have a few different highly targeted lists that combined, number close to a million. More than 10% of that is made up of various buyers lists. I have never marketed my buyers list, and I haven't touched my other subscribers in over six months.

Why? Because there's other things out there, that are much more profitable, with less work involved. Don't get me wrong, I managed that list for over a year solid, focusing all my time on it. I made a ton of money, and through extensive testing I was able to see over 60% open rates, which is phenomenal especially in the diet niche. I put it on the back burner because it's not as scalable as I like to work with.

I'd much rather see (a directly scalable) 200% roi today (from affiliate marketing) than have the "possibility" of 200%+ roi sometime in the future, with much more work involved, and be dependent upon esp's that can shut you down anytime. I'm a huge advocate of self hosted AR's, but that's another discussion.

    TLDR
I'm not trying to put email marketing down. I think it's a great way to remarket abandoned leads, and have a separate stream of income, but do not focus an entire business around it.

Sure email marketing is an awesome avenue to make money, but let's not forget about our core objective.

==>> To fulfill the needs of our subscribers<<==

I have had the fortune or should I say the un-fortune of being on a number of marketers list. It's mainly for educational purposes and to see collectively how they operate in my particular niche.

Needless to say, it can use a little improvement.

Guys and girls the first thing that a subscriber is interested in is what are you going to do for them. Period. End of story.

They are not interested in pitch after pitch after pitch. But, that's the majority of what you see in email correspondence.

I get it. You are in business to make money and that's fine, but at least attempt to fulfill the need of why your subscriber opted in to your list.

They are raising their hands and saying "Help Me!"

You on the other hand is going straight for the kill. Slamming your offers down their throat without allowing them a chance to even get to know you.

You've probably heard that people like to do business with those they know, like and trust. How about we start there and see where it leads us.

That will separate you from the masses who are just in it for the $$. That will get your emails opened and that my friends will ensure that you're around for the longterm and not just a fly by night operation.

Contrary to popular belief and teachings....the money IS NOT IN THE LIST. It's in the RELATIONSHIP you have with the list (subscribers).

    Just my .03 cents....

You can't stand in the doorway of your store as your past customers and visitors walk by, " Hey, John! Haven't seen you in a while. Come on in and see the cool new stuff I have."

Your online business is your virtual store. Your email list is how you get "in front" of your customers.

    THE MOST IMPORTANT THING.

Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. If you look at most (not all) successful businesses online, you'll notice that the bulk of their success can be attributed to email marketing. If you're not able to maintain contact with visitors after they've left your site, then there's little chance of them ever coming back. You can literally make money from your email list from day 1:

    - WITHOUT getting ranked in Google
    - WITHOUT selling any of your own products
    - WITHOUT hiring a customer support team
    - WITHOUT writing your own emails (you can often get them from the affiliate's site)
    - WITHOUT spending 12+ hours per day working

Email marketing is by far the most efficient way to make money online today.

Yes -- email marketing is easily the best way to market to your customers. Look at all of the top companies in the world; they ask for your email, do they not? I would argue that it's also one of the easiest ways to make consistent money on the Internet ( once you have a large enough list ) without having to rank niche sites or similar ventures.

The value of a list can vary depending on how it was obtained and how it's managed.

A list with only 1,000 highly targeted leads which are expertly managed can easily outpull a list of 10,000 leads processed incorrectly.

So you have to start with quality traffic that matches your sites niche, then treat that traffic extremely well and get them to like you. No hype or hard sells allowed.

Provide value first to activate the law of reciprocity, and then make a compelling offer in a straightforward way. This works beautifully.

I have a system I use to build lists of both email and actual mailbox addresses. Then I send direct mail to the home address and the traffic converts amazingly well.

Having a list is very important for building
a long term business on the internet

As you can see even in my signature I
    collect people's email addresses

But more than just getting an email it is the
relationship you build with your subscribers
    that is more important

You cannot look at them as just another email

Every email has a person behind it that wants
    to accomplish something

Your job is to help them go from point A to
Point B and some of those people will be
willing to pay to get further information from you

Some people question whether if you're an affiliate marketer why you would want to create a list...Let me put that question to bed right away.

I'm an affiliate marketer, myself, so I look at it like this: to earn anything worth talking about, through affiliate marketing, you need to do three things...

    (i) Keep your potential customers returning to the sales page (because very, very few people buy anything much at their first visit to a sales page!);

    (ii) Make increasing sales (ideally at progressively higher prices) to the same "captive audience" who regularly rely on and trust your recommendations - that's actually where most of the long-term income is, in affiliate marketing;

(iii) Establish the credibility and trust necessary to do both the above by earning's people respect as a provider of niche-related information.

Without building lists, of course, you can't do any of the three and you'd just be throwing away almost all the traffic you ever generate that doesn't buy anything immediately.

It would be just like trying to run the bath without putting the plug in the hole before opening the taps.

What kind of way to run a business would that be?
For most people, most of the time, it's just about as simple as that.
