Help with direction: Starting An Internet Business?

by SFNY
20 replies
I received a message about a month ago from a warrior but never heard back after responding. He asked me a few questions to help me with my direction and I responded but he never followed up.

This was my old thread: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...-business.html

I'm wondering what your thoughts are and what direction you think I should go given my responses to the questions (which I posted below). I'm totally undecided. I want to start an internet business but I'm not sure if I should go Ecommerce, Services, Leadgen or go the internet marketing route such as building a site that earns through Adsense, Affiliates, and digital products.

So question 1.

Do you want real* customers?

*Definition of a real customer is one with whom you have a relationship and accountability to.

Yes. I definitely like the idea of having real customers and building relationships with them. I started two businesses in my life and both involved real customers.

Question 2

Are you looking to create a business you can sell one day or a business to keep yourself in work?

I guess I'm looking for a business to keep myself in work with the potential to maybe sell also. It also depends on my living conditions and the actual work itself. I am 30 now and I retire from my real job in less then 10 years with a pension. I'm newly married and love the idea of having kids soon and building an income online that I can earn a living and spend a lot of time with my kids. Some people can have 3,4,5 careers in their life. The two businesses that I was in were fitness and nightlife - both very different markets and different from my actual job. If I was in business in an online business for 10 years, and the job wasn't fulfilling anymore and I got an offer, I would consider selling and getting into something new. If the business worked for my lifestyle, I wouldn't sell. I do like the possibility for a means to an end in entrepreneurship - the potential to sell the asset.

Question 3

What Country are you in?

I live in the USA, NY. I grew up in the city but now I live in the suburbs. There are local towns though that have a lot of restaurants and affluent vibrant communities.

Question 4

Are you from a City or a remote area?

You said you have some experience in developing sites, are you a programmer or an assembler of sites

I'm not a programmer. I have been using wordpress for close to 10 years and I'm pretty good with it and getting a site up. I work with thesis and know html, css, and have hosting so it wouldn't be very difficult for me to get a site up.

Question 5

What other skills do you have?

Other skills - I graduated with a BS in business. I'm a very creative guy and love to work with a team. I'm knowledgeable in marketing and learned a lot about advertising from running my promotional businesses (I started a nightlife marketing business when I was 19, promoting and coordinating events at nightclubs with a team of freelancers).

Question 6

What businesses have you worked in.

My last business was in fitness and I built a list to 1400 people in 4 months with launch rock. We also sold out of BETA and people loved our concept. This business was a subscription box business. I shut it down around a year ago right after BETA. Shipping rates were through the roof and our margins suffered.

I'm a very quick learner and have a detailed eye. I wouldn't sell something or put my name on anything unless it was branded right and portrayed high quality with a professional touch. I'm also a decent writer. Part of being in nightlife involved pitching venue owners, negotiating deals and drawing up proposals. Project management skills are up to par.

Lastly, I have very good work ethics and I'm personable. I'm a good guy and would never look to get over on someone because I wouldn't want it done to me. I'm a hustle type entrepreneur and I'm motivated and hungry.

Hopefully someone can give me a little direction. Thank you.

Does anyone happen to know of any mentors or mentor services out there with those willing to help a fellow 'trep out?

I think finding a mentor would probably be the best for me.

I fully agree with the above listed route and recommend no. 1 for you to begin with. There is a lot of money to be made without having the need to create your own product.

The best way is to invest in developing a business online. For that you need domain, hosting and an auto responder service. Get a domain on a niche that you want to start the business and host a landing page to collect email list. Then use the auto responder service to market to the list. Focus on generating traffic to your landing page and in time you will have a business to work your way out of a full time job.

I agree with the above post, I think you should definitely consider starting something online. This would give you the option of working from home and being able to spend time with your kids. A website takes time to build though but I think it is worth it because from the way I see it, it is something long term.

I have been a real estate agent for the past 5-6 years and I am trying to switch to internet marketing, building websites etc. Personally, not too long after I discovered the rewards/gains internet marketing can potentially provide, I really regretted not doing this earlier. I realise that after working for a company so long, after I quit I have nothing

I am now working on my new website that I think could help you. Have a look at it

            Hey, I appreciate it.

I'm familiar with building websites and have built a nice list in the past. I haven't really made money with websites but rather done it in the past as a hobby. I've been using thesis/wordpress for a while.

I have business experience. I built two businesses - 1 ecommerce, 1 online/offline promotion business in nightlife. We used a list to market our events and ourwebsite sell our tickets but most of the work was done offline. I understand what it takes, I just needed a little direction in the route I should go. I consider myself of having more of an entrepreneurial style then an IM mentality.

I wasn't sure if I should focus on doing a startup online, going the ecommerce route or to get into affiliate marketing - promoting a product basicially. For some reason, I feel like doing affiliate sites are more like a job then running a business. I could be wrong but that is why I'm here. I also have a love/hate relationship with the idea of relying on google organic search.

I appreciate your post. Thank you.

Thank you. This makes total sense to me and that is what I want. I guess I have to decide on the niche product and get to work. I realize that there are a lot of options and everything is in front of me. I just don't want to choose the wrong business.

It will take a while to build up your online presence. You must consistently post good content across the Internet where people can find your stuff. This will help you no matter what product/service you are selling!

(Tip: I use PLR to create unique content quickly.)

Rather than finding a mentor and paying thousands to them i prefer doing a Network Marketin business because you will get more than 100% from your sponsor as they will b successful only when you are successful. Knowledge can b gained if you're ready to put efforts but its good if somebody's focus is on earning you a lot of money than to just provide you with some knowledge as with that knowledge you'll ultimately earn money only so why not go directly for money and focus just in that...In Network Marketin th sponsor apart from telling you everythin about their current knowledge search new things themselves and tell you that will prove benefitial in earnin money. They also provide u tools to increase ur business for free as ur success is their success. Hence its better to start a network marketin business and utilise ur money bette than to pay for coachin and all. On the job trainin always cost less and be more productive then takin trainings first then utilisin those trainings. durin on th job trainin u also get to build ur business or earn money so it gives u nice feelings already. Wish u luck

There's really no purpose for a paid IM mentor anymore, especially with the success rate decreasing among students of so called coaching programs. Also, those questions you asked yourself are really good ones but at the end of the day you need to find out for yourself in what market you feel most comfortable at. Try to connect with other warriors and get a JV going outside the IM market. Bounce ideas of each other and follow up on what needs to be done.

I honestly never gave a JV some thought. That's actually not a bad idea at all. Everything I have learned has come hands on. When I owned my nightlife business, I never learned from others. I did start with a partner too. In fact, those who ran their own parties and promoted venues wanted to keep all the inside knowledge for themselves - drafting proposals, working deals with owners, building their teams, email lists, ect. I had to figure it out on my own. Even if I payed them to teach me they would probably have held the KEY things from me. They wanted that leverage and they knew we would become competitors one day. I understand your thought and thank you melchidex88.

get into affiliate marketing - promoting a product basicially.
This is the easiest way in.

My current main income, all I have to do is advertise and teach others how to duplicate my system. Everything else is handled by the company.

And I know a lot of successful marketers in both the online and offline industry that would strongly agree with me. It's a silly thing to think that one can only succeed when investing in some mentor/guru. Sure, networking and connecting is definitely key but paying $2997 for a coaching program where the content is drip-feed and automated really isn't.

Then there's the fact I know some marketers who work completely isolated from all that happens in the IM industry and everyone involved but who earn more in a day than those gurus make in a month.
