New here, hungry for information :)

Hi, I'm new here and to marketing. One of my well to do clients of my family's (barely standing) home cleaning business told me ebay and affiliation was my best bet for a low/no cost business start up. Since then I've researched a lot and found myself here. Now I'd like to know what others here recommend as a good starting point, or maybe a ladder of which to climb. Not to brag, but I feel like a god among men when it comes to using my head (when I want to) and spotting BS, so if any recommendations require smarts to pull off, I'll take them as another option.

I really appreciate any help I can get, and look forward to being a resource of knowledge here on this forum over time. Thanks

Good. In that case use your head to think of a need/demand in the market that you can fill and monetize. It's really that easy. And fundamentally it's really no different online than online so if you have experience with a home cleaning business or anything else you should be able to figure this out.

That's entrepreneurship 101 Kilgore. But thanks, you did encourage me to invest a little more confidence in being original. But right now I'm trying to get a feel for Internet marketing. I've been reading outdated books. For instance I don't know if trade shows are worth looking into or if I should join worldwidebrands to avoid taking risks with crooked/shoddy dropshippers. I don't know if I should be reading about buyer psychology in regard to sites like eBay as every item I can fathom is on there at every price I'm the range. I could be inventive and try to have someone make me an app with my non existent money to record every existing item on Amazon and eBay to fill what's missing on either. I could think up something neat for kickstarter...etc. I don't know the dynamics of competition. I'm lacking real world experience and hope that a compassionate fellow could share information to keep me out of pitfalls or point me to the best resources on avoiding them. I want to know if others have started on eBay and later found it to be their weakest marketing income. It's once I have a feel for the actual environment I'm in that I can play it to my advantage seamlessly.

Right now I'm thinking it would be better to network and see things from other's perspective to get a more realistic idea of this world. I'm scared of wasting more time not providing my family a decent life, so I really don't want to mess this up. From what I've heard there is a massive amount of failure here.

        Hello,

You can get started with affiliate marketing but I would recommend you still stick to your main source of income for now as learning and mastering affiliate marketing may take time before you can make a decent income and concentrate on it.

The best way out is to invest in developing a business online. For that you need domain, hosting and an auto responder service. Get a domain on a niche that you want to start the business and host a landing page to collect email list. Then use the auto responder service to market to the list. Focus on generating traffic to your landing page and in time you will have a business to work your way out of a full time job.

Hi Loyalotus, apart from money to invest your concern should be how much time you're ready to put into your IM business...there are many low cost options but also requires efforts. Network Marketin is one of them which pays passiv and residual income after some time but takes some effort to build that business.
In any case you should build a subscriber list that is an online asset. It takes some time but if you hav your list with nice numbers then it surely pays you off very well in long term...one promotional mail could turn few thousand dollars to you if the quality of your list is good.

    No, they don't.

From what I've heard there is a massive amount of failure here.
    You heard right.

Try to find someone with a vested interest in your success. Most people will just want to sell you info. products but they can't offer any real advice because they don't have any experience. A ten year old can set-up a squeeze page and promote an ebook or video tutorials without having any actual knowledge of the subject.

The most important requirement for success is the ability to tell the truth from the BS. That's why a lot of newbies fail. They listen to the wrong people.
