Newbie Tip: The More Descriptive Your Title, The More/Better Answers You'll Get

As everyone here should know, a Headline is the "Ad For The Ad", intended to get the attention of it's target audience and get them to read.

If you need help here, you're essentially advertising for help.
Your Thread Title's only goal is to get the attention of people who can help you
.

Unfortunately, here are some of the thread titles that have been recently posted here:
  • Have to know somthing
  • Can I do this?
  • A Few Silly Questions
  • help please
  • Newbie question
  • Stunned and confused
Guess what? I'm not clicking on those links, and neither are a lot of other knowledgeable people here. Result: Not only will you get less people reading your request for help, but it drastically decreases the possibility that the people who do click are knowledgeable on what you're asking about.

Don't get me wrong, I've posted vague thread titles for specific reasons before, but not when I'm trying to get a question answered.

If you don't learn this most basic fact about targeting and getting the right people's attention (here, in your own online promotions, and in life in general), your odds of success will remain drastically lowered.

To sum up: Whether or not you found this post useful personally, you at least knew exactly what it was about when you chose to click on it. Now pay it forward. Which brings me to the real reason I'm posting here; I wanted to ask you, do these jeans make me look fat?

Edit/Add: The 2nd problem: Titles that list a topic but don't indicate whether the post is asking for help or providing tips, etc. Example:

Subject: Affiliate Marketing

...Yeah, AND?...

- Do you need help understanding the concept?
- Do you have a successful example you want to share?
- Do you need feedback on what scripts/affiliate networks others use?
- Did your cat paw at the keys while you were away and that's what it happened to type?

Again, provide more info, especially if you're hoping for help.

Right on Tim, like most people I just scan the titles looking for places I can help out... if you're not giving me anything to go on then I'm not clicking.

You're absoultely right. Without threads being specific, can't be sure of what its about and whether its worth your time checking it out.

Another point to this is other new forum members looking to learn something won't know if there is something of value to learn in the thread.

Yes they/we can hover and view the first few lines of a thread and "possibly" find out that way what the thread is actually about but sometimes the first few lines are also filled with err "babble" for want of a better word, so someone who has a spare five minutes to help will move on to a thread that they can tell the contents of from the subject title and a new forum member will also move on to a different thread and may miss a valuable lesson.

Moving on to the important part of this thread, Tim if you return those jeans and perhaps go for a darker shade of denim, that may solve your problem
