Need Suggestions: Which Angle for a WAH Website?

Here's the thing: I am a freelance writer/blogger and internet marketer. I'm currently building an informational/tutorial styled website (that includes a blog) to help others learn what I've learned in my experience.

My target niche market is the aspiring work-at-home mom crowd (I've been one for 15 years) to show them how to start a home based business as an entrepreneur. I'd take them from everything including conceptualizing an idea, to business license requirements, online marketing, software and hardware and building income streams.

I know there's an abundance of blog sites on work from home, how to blog, internet marketing, etc. so I don't want to keep beating that horse. But, I have a passion for my WAH topic and lots of experience. However, I think "work at home" is insanely broad, but I also don't want to box myself in with one (potentially too narrow) topic.

What topic/angle should I choose to stand out from the crowd?

    All those blogs and sites that you refer to are selling the same ideas
    as you will be selling. The only difference? Their stories.

    So if you want your site/blog to sell then TELL YOUR STORY.
    Your story is YOUR brand. Don't try to be different with the
    facts because at the end of the day the same marketing principles
    will remain such--principles. The only difference is the way they
    will be taught and YOUR way will be your story and how it
    connects with what you teach.

    Show me any successful blog in your market and I'll show you a
    marketer telling her story.

      Ray Edwards is right on with his advice. One thing that I would add is that you want your audience to know, like and trust you. I refer to it as the KiLT method. Use "your voice" and experiences and you should have no problem building your own crowd.

      Raydal, I like, no LOVE your perspective! Storytelling is an integral part of the success of any marketing or copywriting schematic, but I've never considered it as an angle in branding or narrowing such a broad niche. That's good!

        Well, there are a lot of marketers teaching the same lessons, but those
        who get the cultic following are those who can tell it with STYLE.

        Most of the successful mom at home sites I've seen have a very heavy
        dose of the creators story--family life, children, homeschooling, religion etc.
        Beneath the skin, the marketing lessons are the same.

          Yep , I think having a unique Story and to be able to articulate it in a way that will poignantly resonant with many others is an outstanding way to create your Brand and standout from the many others who do this.

          There is no question about that.

          Good storytelling captures and engages people like nothing else

    Defining your topic uniquely is only one of many, many ways to stand out in a crowded market.

    Other ways to be unique would include
    • Offering a quality of information that no one else delivers
    • Giving a unique perspective or analysis to the information you provide
    • Offering products that are unique that you have created
    • Giving the very best customer experience and service in the industry
    • Establishing a unique persona or "voice" in your business
    • Anything that you do that others won't do (like giving one-on-one help, giving quality information away freely, involving your customers in interactive learning, etc, etc)
    You might also think about establishing a community or membership site where you charge a subscription fee but give away your products for free.

    There are all kinds of ways to be unique beyond just the topics you choose to address.

    By the way, the "work at home mom" market is extremely competitive so you have your work cut out for you. But don't let that get you down ... if you truly provide a very high quality experience there will be room for you.

    I fully agree with Raydal. The great thing with telling your own story is that it is literally easy to do because you already know how you went through and you can just describe or narrate everything with ease. So just do it!

    I fully agree with Ray's advice, and indeed the story aspect of building your brand is massively powerful IF you execute it the right way - there are a plethora of 'Mom bloggers' and many of them approach it from the 'Girlie' perspective, all pink and Mom's Apple pie type of thing, also the Christian angle is pushed - there are not so many 'Funky' approaches, unique personality portraying irony, grit, and humor - it is worthwhile allowing yourself to really let loose with the unique angle. Just a thought - there is just so much 'Vanilla' personality stuff being produced these days.
