How would you market/promote yourself as a Freelance writer to high-paying clients?

Hi guys!

How would you market yourself as a freelance writer/freelancer if you have already built up a pretty good portfolio w/h more than 130 positive(4.9/5.0) feedbacks on Freelancer.com?

Also,is there a way to find such high-paying prospects?Where can those people be found? Is there a sure way of getting to know such clients, or is it just luck if you get noticed by some of them along the way?

Thanks for your responses in advance!

Cheers

      Wow,Focusedlife

This is one of the coolest ways to respond to a general thread.I really appreciate you taking the time to do it. If I understand you ok,then you are saying that I should showcase my customer feedbacks as part of my portfolio that I can share with my clients? Are you saying that I should printscreen feedbacks and testimonials and showcase them on my other platforms?

If that is so,then I have to tell you that other platforms did not work out so well for me. Freelancer.com was the only platform where I could start my "career" as a freelancer. I have landed some jobs on Upwork, but those were just a couple of bucks here and there. The idea was the same there: land a few low paying jobs to build reputation. Although, the amount, volume and quality of the job offers was sh*t, and I came to learn that the amount of well-paid jobs on both Elance and Odesk were significantly lower, too. It is the same case with Freelancer, but it is getting harder and harder to get jobs there nowadays.

Having said that,I wanted to break out from this circle and find a way to gain access to clients a whole lot easier. How can I do that in ways other than sharing on other platforms that have not worked out so far?

Anyway, thanks for your response.I see that you are doing a way more lucrative business than I do with 5k book contracts and whatnot.Congrats and keep it up!

      Cheers

@TobinBell - What I did above was the sort of stuff I teach my students.

You MUST arrive like no one else, and you MUST be prolific.

Take the lemons and turn them into lemonades.

In other words, do the things that no one else will do towards a goal and you will achieve the results that no one else can get.

Weird how that works, but trust it does.

Leverage ALL of your output, not just for one end but as a cascade to be repurposed and placed on a different mantel.

Your work on any of the freelancing platforms can be releveraged by pointing those in other spots when/where you can.

Also, you shouldn't rely solely on those or ANY one platform for your clients.

You should employ outbound, inbound, strategies that leverage the power of proliferation.

    Put offers up, somewhere, everyday.

Respond to people that raise their hands for help, but throw grenades and make stuff happen everyday.

Spell out your services, step by step and pour salt on your customers wounds, every day.

When you can leverage others, do so.

    Increase your efficiency and effectiveness.

Study, then do, but more do.

Hope that was all helpful and wishing you the best of luck.

    Regards,

    Los

You can advertise in the Warriors for Hire section in this forum. Offer a discount to get a few orders under your belt. I assume you have your own hosted website and blog and keep that active. Join relevant Facebook groups. I am a member of several local business groups and find it is great for getting work. Gumtree is a way to advertise your services.

Advertise in as many places as you can because you don't know what work may come from each source. Track what ads are working well and what ones are not working at all.

It's not a problem but it is a wise idea if you're serious about your business. A site can list prices, have samples of your work, tell people about what you offer, have testimonials and show people that you are serious.

Don't use a free site, though. It's best to use a hosted site with your own domain name because you have more control.

    Create a website for sure.

Don't go American style, with a lot of flashy buttons and advertisements.
Keep it simple, stylish and to the point.
Have a page with your prices on it, maybe make them even a bit higher as on freelancer. So a client from freelancer likes the idea he gets a discount.
Have a page with references. Again keep it in one style.

    Good luck

    Hi,

go ahead and make a free account on iwriter.com If you are successful to become an elite writer, you can earn $15 or more per article of 500 words. Sometimes even more. At freelancer you will not get good clients. Most of them are the middle men or looking for cheap writers.

      Hey,Robert!

This is exactly the kind of rate (15 USD/500 words) which I am trying to stay away from/scale up in terms of revenue growth. I want to target high-paying clients and more prestigous projects.

Well, based on your sig, you have a tight niche coverage.

    That's a good start.

The more specialized you are, the higher the chance you can charge premium rates.

Having your own dedicated portfolio site helps though.

    Put one up.

    Then start networking.

First, learn about sales and marketing. Get very comfortable with promoting/selling yourself. Always be prospecting. There's a bunch of different ways, but focus on 1 or 2 in the beginning. Then you take them through a consultative sales process. This is how you position your value. Comeback with a proposal and cash that check. And... Most importantly, the money is in the follow up.

Would a video introduction help me attract more clients? Do high-paying clients use YouTube to find their freelancers at all? Also,if I were to buy a domain name and hosting, what would my domain name be? My name?Nickname?or some random domain name like hiremee.com or whatever?

      Thanks,guys!

Your name you can use, but if you are more known by a nickname, use that one. If you want to be found by your own name as well, use it in the title and Meta tags.

A video helps, but again, make it a stylish video that fits you. If you are a serious and good writer, the video should say the same.

  • It depends on your profit margin...

If you have huge margins & Customer Value, then you can use standard traffic methods (PPC, Solo Ads)

If not, then leverage more sources and build up a customer base (Fiver, ODesk, Freelancer, etc)

I think the best thing to do is write for brokers and private message clients that you find through these sites. A lot of times clients will message you and discuss starting a large project. You can even do all of the work through whatever platform you're using, such as freelancer. In many cases, it really is as simple as asking.
