Why Respect Trumps All on a Marketing Forum

Okay, let me change this intro so a few will stop flaming- which was the exact opposite of what I was trying to accomplish here. I am good at what I do and I have a lot of confidence in my abilities, so I enjoy giving advice and I love a good debate about hot topics.

There is only the smallest different between a healthy debate and a flame-filled argument though- do you know what that is? It's our intentions.

In fact, let me clear the air once and for all of my personal intentions. I'll even quote myself so it stands out-

I’m truly sorry if I ever hurt your feelings here. That certainly wasn’t my goal at the time, and I try my best to show others respect even when they are not showing any to me. So I apologize sincerely and ask for your forgiveness- even if I didn’t realize I had offended you in the first place.
If you’re wondering why I’m writing all of this- that’s simple.

We need to start having real discussions about marketing once again. But for that to happen, a lot of people (myself included) are going to have to dial back their egos just a little bit to make sure that everyone’s voice is heard. After all, this should not be an intimidating place…it’s impossible for people to learn anything in that kind of environment.

So I’ll ask you to do me a favor…which in turn is actually a favor for everyone here. Learn to respect your fellow warriors and make your intentions clear. Even if you don’t like them, it takes very little effort to extend a little bit of respect and make this a better place for all.

Thank you for reading.

Yes - that is probably the most humble statement that I have read in a very long time.

Do you think that should garner you any respect?

None at all...but I was hoping the other 7 1/2 paragraphs would. This wasn't about me anyway though.

Why so needy? A superstar should never be concerned about how they are perceived by others. What do they really know about you?
This wasn't about me anyway though.
No - more about me, I'm sure. lol

Respect is earned, not doled-out automatically simply because someone is breathing. Not every question, answer or comment deserves respect - - mine included.

Humble??? I'm laughing so hard I can hardly type!

Perhaps you confused the word with one of its antonyms (e.g. arrogant, conceited, boastful...)

Sarcasm | Definition of sarcasm by Merriam-Webster

the use of words that mean the opposite of what you really want to say especially in order to insult someone, to show irritation, or to be funny
If you made it past the first six words without bringing the insults, that may have been a little more clear.

Yes, I generally never claim any successes beyond the hundreds of millions. Even when I generate billions in sales, it's just so gauche to state it.

In marketing, ego is a worthless attribute. By all measures, including conversion and profitability, credible and convincing communication relies upon adept employment of empathy - true understanding of people's needs and wants with the willingness to respect and serve others.

From perspective through 40 years in business, be assured: The juvenile trait and practice of egoism builds barriers to both personal and business success.

People in need of products and services, seeking counsel prior to consumption, do not respond to those with the heart of a salesperson but will respond to those with the heart of a teacher.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with having a 'healthy' ego in the pursuit of any avocation. In reality is is one part of the equation that can define our level of self-confidence.

None of that precludes ego, nor are they mutually exclusive.

Yes, if taken too far. The secret to personal success is using all the various aspects of our personality traits in the correct ratios in a recipe that results in a perfect dish.

That sounds nice, but in the real world people respond to different sales and marketing techniques due to a wide range of ideas and emotions.

There is no one size fits all in any aspect of sales and marketing. There never has been and there never will be. Not as long as we are all different. That's what makes selling so interesting. The challenges presented by each new encounter are what give us the opportunity to acquire new skills based upon new realities that surface during those encounters.

Anyone who wants to tell you that there are universal and totally undeniable 'rules' in selling, just wants to sell you a book.

      Cheers. - Frank

      P.S. That's based on 50+ tears of selling, but who's counting? :-)

Keith, there are a LOT of people here I do NOT respect and never will. I don't care how bad they need money, the fact that their dog died, their desire to "help" everyone or whatever their situation is.

I don't respect liars, thieves, scammers, people that don't respect others (for example by being rude when someone tries to answer their questions but it's not exactly the answer they want), people that don't follow the rules, people that try to pull the wool over our eyes even if technically what they say isn't a lie, people too lazy to try on their own and just want a handout, etc.

I hope they are banned and never come back if they don't change. And when they break a forum rule I will report them every time. I will also point out that their claim to be able to get 100,234 visitors by tomorrow noon in their sig may be a little off when they are asking how to get traffic. If I didn't do these things - report, retort when necessary, etc. then I would be disrespecting the forum at large.

Everyone else I respect and am willing to give the benefit of the doubt. If there is no compelling reason to doubt I try not to.

    Mark
