Poll: White Board Videos: Love Them or Hate Them?

I was thinking of getting a white board animated video made for Youtube because I personally like them and they grab my attention. Just wondering how others feel about them. Do they catch your attention or do you immediately click off them? And do you prefer them with or without voice over?

Nowadays, ranking videos requires us - more than ever - to consider "bounce rate." A high bounce rate? Low ranking. The inverse relationship means we need to sufficiently engage the audience so that they stick around. There are many tricks for it. The obvious one? Make a video your audience will watch and sit through, right the way to the end.

The best type of videos to use, in order of how they affect bounce rate:

    1. Live Action + Production Effects (often including animation).
    2. Live Action.
    3. Animation + Voice-Over.
    4. Animation.
    5. Slide-Shows + Voice-Over.
    6. Slide-Shows.

The answer, then? They're around the middle, Judy. What I'd recommend is making your own videos. You'll spend more on the software / service initially, but save countless hundreds or thousands in the long-term, depending on your output.

Thanks Tom. I have made some videos, although I have gotten away from it a bit. I figured it would be fun to try something new

Good point Niche Man. Maybe a better question would have been is: how they are working for those who use them.

I personally think they are pretty cool. They do catch my attention and I like them without voice, but it's all personal preference of course.

That's a good question and one that's come up quite often here. But I just want to give you a word of caution asking that on a marketing forum. Unless your target market is specifically Internet Marketers in this forum you may not get the most accurate answers. Here's why
    • Many here have seen tons of white board animation videos and grown weary.
    • Many here have probably used them and grown weary.
    • Many here have probably seen a lot of bad ones and grown weary.
But that doesn't automatically mean your target market has.

But to answer your question, for me personally it depends.
    • What the product or service is.
    • How good your script is ... does it get my attention and hold it.
    • Is it long enough to tell the story -- but not so long it loses my interest.
In short I won't click away just because I see it's a white board video like I've heard some say here. It all comes down to how well it's put together, the product and of course the message.

My only pet peeve are the one's with no voice.

I think they suck...I find them very annoying and never watch them. I actually tried making some quite some years back and found that they didn't work very well for my audience at all..

    Question:

When they look at 10+ sites that are doing the exact same thing (a whiteboard), how are you standing out and catching their attention by using one?

I guess I look at it a different way. If I am on Youtube and searching for a video with specific keywords and a white board video comes up I may or may not click on it depending on the title of the video.

I guess time will tell. I am having one made as an experiment but for the most part I will create my own.

I can get that, but how many videos come up with that title when you search any meaningful keyword that the user has to choose from?

Personally I love white board videos. I have seen both good and bad white board videos, it all depends on the title and how the content is presented inside the video. If the narrative is clear and the script is interesting, there's no reason why your audience would turn their back on your white board video.

    Their tired...

It seems everyone and their dog has them... thanks to Fiverr.

With that said, a good concept and script can and DO make a big difference.

I agree / feel they are lining up their waterskis to jump over the shark fairly soon, and concentrating on the best way to get your message out (visually and audibly) is the best bet, even with a small budget towards equipment and software.

They're getting rather commonplace - especially the ones with the computer generated hand - or stuff done with templates on services like PowToon.

    You need a video that:
    1. Grabs the viewers' attention and compels them to watch it until the end, and
    2. Can easily be distinguished from other videos in your niche.
Usually that starts with scripting and with an original idea.

Take a look at the other videos for your niche on sites like YouTube, then make sure you come up with something original and different, so you stand out from the crowd.

I like watching whiteboard videos. But, what make them interesting to me is the voice over it and the fun of the animation. So, without the voice, you lose the attention; you lose the promotion effect.

  • I like them for specifically promoting something on a salespage, but for a YouTube video, maybe not so much. Only because they are meant to go straight into promoting something, in my opinion. I think that there are other ways to make captivating youtube videos. While they can be good, I just use them for promoting offline businesses and other salespages I may create.

      Agreed 100%.

However, I have seen some that are quite good that involve statistics and data, instead of just cartoon drawings.

I use them all the time....you'll find one in the site in my signature too. They work well. You know what a lot depends on how its presented. The Fiverr guys usually stick to stock images and offer nothing out of the ordinary....but if you have a well crafted and personalized white board vid it can work wonders.

I like em. I remember when UPS had their whiteboard animation on TV a few years ago. It really got to me. I mean i *really* understood how their shipping process works, and why they're one of the top pics for shipping in the US - and overseas. I like them with voice too. Need the voice.

I don't really like or dislike the format. Like many other forms of communication, it depends on the execution. Engage me, inform me and/or entertain me, and you can use white board (or pink board), with or without voice-over, and I'm good.

Bore me, pressure me and/or insult my intelligence, and it doesn't matter what format you use. I am outta there...

When I first saw one, I thought, "Wow, that's amazing! How do they do that?"

Now, I just think they are boring and bothersome.
I would rather see a video of a live person.

I do not have any preference about the white board BUT the first 15 seconds of the video is really important to me.

It will determine if the whole video is worth my time.

We use them and most of all, many of our offline clients LOVE the ones we create for them.

Something about combining cartoons with real life - they amuse people and many times hold their attention longer (least in our studies).

Best I can tell, ones with voice over work better than just music.

I think if you have a good story or message, you can use softwares like VideoMakerFX and/or Explaindio to create your own videos with animations and music... It would probably generate some traffic from YouTube if the content is very good :-)

Some of my top controls use a doodle to get the message over.

    They work.

But... it's important to remember to test your copy, cheap... first. Then... you can ramp it up into a doodle - if you're converting.

    The point is...

Copy will convert ugly and simple- if it's going to convert at all.

Doodle are about making the campaign more potentially scalable.
