Opinions on what to use for my website

Hi guys, wanted a quick bit of help from you. I tried searching but get some weird results.

Basically i want to start my website but want to clarify a few things first. See the only website i have built before is on weebly (not for profit) but i actually want to create a site that will kind of be a base for my brand. I suppose it will include a blog, a page where i review products and services ive used, maybe the odd affiliate marketing stuff etc
I feel weebly isnt the best for this, i find the blog function a but unstable when writing lengthy blog posts. So what i am really asking is what is my best option for hosting and building my website, it doesnt have to be fancy, just something i can manage myself and where i can do the tasks mentioned above.
Im not talking building one page sites for a niche product here im thinkingg more a home for my brand and products (as and when i make them).
Is wordpress a must when it comes to a website with a blog?
I have heard stuff about bluehost, anyone using that? Would appreciate some thoughts guys,
Thanks.

Here's what I would do and I do do...

    1/ Get a namecheap account
2/ Find a great domain name (try a including a primary kwd) and register it at namecheap
3/ You can also host your site at namecheap although any place is as good as any other for a cheap shared hosting account which is what you will need, so set one up at namecheap as well to keep everything all together.
4/ Install wordpress using fantastico in your new cpanel and choose a theme.
5/ Learn the back end of wordpress and design your amazing new site. There is tons of help out there to learn wordpress and it's really easy and really fun and has such an amazing amount of variety that you can change anything you like. Keep experimenting with designs and layouts and themes and plugins and you are just going to totally fall in love with wordpress I guarantee it.

Weebly is ok, but definitely has limitations. It is more for a few page starter website, IMHO.

As for what you are wanting to do, I would definitely recommend WordPress. It's easy to use and learn, has tons of info around the web where you can get help if you need any, and for what you are wanting to do, it would work really well.

You will probably just need a shared hosting plan, Namecheap is great for that and have awesome support.

Most hosting companies have one form or another of a one-click installer to install Wordpress for you if you are unfamiliar with doing it manually.

As many here and around the internet will tell you, stay away from and hosting company owned by EIG (hostgator, ipage, fatcow, etc) unless you want stress and BS to deal with at one time or another.

I think a nice shared hosting plan to start yourself out and using Wordpress will give you some great results.

I have a couple dozen Wordpress sites myself and love it's ease of use for my purposes. I am not an expert by any means but I have done a lot of experimenting and testing with it as well as some other similar CMS/Blog software's and for what you are looking to do I think you will be very happy with it.

      Your post got my attention.

What is the problem of using any hosting company owned by EIG?
      I always recommend HG,
also what Hosting company are you using or you recommend?

Well, I had used them in the past with no problems in the past. Then last year I got 2 hosting accounts (with 2 different EIG hosting companies) with them again for some other low-end projects and had no problems for about 6 months or so.

Then out of the blue they froze one account saying my sites had potential malicious infections. They told me the only way they would unlock my account was if I bought their Sitelock security package (about $90 per website per year). They basically would not release my access to my sites unless I paid their extortion attempt $.

It after fighting with them on dozens of different phone calls I got them unlocked after jumping through their hoops. I had during that time went ahead and uploaded my websites to another host I had for other projects (Namecheap, Awesome Host) and got my sites live finally.

With the exact same files (exactly the same from a backup) I had a couple of independent highly known and top security companies, run their checks and they found ZERO malicious files.

I called the EIG hosting company and told them and spoke to a manager (again) and told him what was found. What the EIG host found were POTENTIAL backdoors in a couple of WordPress plugins and THATS what they were flagging my files as malicious for.

When speaking to the manager I got him to clearly admit that there wasn't any actual malicious files (NONE of my sites ever have had any) but just possible security holes with a WP plugin, he said "Well aren't potential backdoor threats just as bad as a malicious file?".

That was BS, there are basically potential backdoor threats in many WP plugins. I get my sites shut down for several days and lose money for that?

I even had additional security in place but because there was a reported potential backdoor threat, they shut me down! They have done this same exact scam with countless others as I had later found out.

The software that they were using to supposedly detect their malicious file threats is the exact same software (Sitelock) company of who's security software account upgrades they were trying to sell at $99 per website.

Don't get me wrong, there is no guarantee that you WILL have this happen. However, if you are one of the unlucky ones you will be cursing the day you bought hosting from them.

A few of their hosting companies, like Hostgator, used to be good hosting to use till they were bought by EIG.

Before you buy hosting from them, do yourself a favor and do a Google/Bing/Yahoo/etc. search for their Sitelock scams. I wish I had before buying from them.

I am NOT trying to be slanderous of them, I am just stating what has happened to me and many other unsuspecting buyers.

I guess I must be one of the lucky ones because I have used Hostgator for over 8 years and never had a problem with them. Anyway good luck with your endeavors.

I agree. Also not having an uptime monitor (e.g. uptimerobot.com) setup to know how much downtime your website is really experiencing.

Well, Hostgator used to be a good company for inexpensive hosting. Then when EIG bought them they switched to using their support, business practices, etc. and they just aren't what they used to be.

Don't get me wrong, many people won't have any big issues with them. However for those who do, it will be a very stressful experience.

I have dealt with their (EIG who now owns Hostgator) support and people (the same for their hosting companies) through 2 different companies of theirs and had bad experiences at both. Several other website developers that I know have had the same bad experiences.

Many people won't experience the stress and BS of theirs, but for me I would rather go anywhere else.

Their people are very nice on the phone for the most part, they just need a bit more technical knowledge from the tech standpoint.

Self hosted Wordpress is a good choice for your blog.

    Positive Side
    1. It is free.
    2. You can create backup for your entire site easily. (who knows what might happened)
    3. A lot of themes to choose from.
    4. A lot of plugins to choose from.

    Negative Side
    1. The most popular CMS attacked by hackers. (Learn how to setup security properly and you will reduce the attack)
    2. Most spammed CMS by comment spammer.
