Howdy all.

I'm looking for a windows utility that will find and replace a chunk of text on a bunch of files at once. (I'm udpating the opt-in form on my website and need to put new code in a hundred or so HTML files.)

On my old computer, I used to use a freeware program called Win Easy for this, but I can't find it anywhere online. Anyone have a (preferably freeware) alternative or a working download link for Win Easy?

      thanks Chris. It's close but not quite right, as it appears to only allow me to change a single line of text. (it stops at a line break) I have about a paragraph's worth to change.

        I use notepad++ can search whole folders and replace a paragraph if you need to.

          I will second that. Notepad++ is a great tool and its free! It has support for all web languages which makes readability and editing easy.

          After you install notepad++, here's what you need to do:

          Select or highlight all the files you wish to edit (if everything in your folder will be edited just hit control+a). Then you can right-click on one of the objects to bring up the context menu, and there should be an option "Edit with Notepad++". click it!

          This will open up all the files in tabbed windows. Now look up at the menus and find the Search menu, and choose 'Replace' from the drop down. Here you will have a dialog box in which you will input the text to find and the text to change it with. There is a button on the right that says 'Replace all in all opened documents'. This will update every instance of the original code with the new code in every open file.

          After this is done you can go to File and select 'Save All'. This will save all the open files, then you can close notepad++ and you are done!

            thanks Vossman and Luckies. the issue I'm having is that it only allows me to paste the first line of the paragraph into the search box. (the code has some line breaks in it and Textpad++ won't allow me to post the entire chunk of code -- it cuts off at the first line break).

            Any ideas?

              it really depends how long your paragraph is. If you highlight the text and than click "find" it will add more than one line, but is still limited.

              Being opensource you could edit the source code if you have the right skills

    I would suggest that when you find a solution, you don't replace the code on the page, but instead, place your new code in an external file ... then replace all your current code with a call, calling in the one external file. That way, next time you want to make a change, you are just changing your external file and it will automatically pull in the amended version all the way through your site.

    In php you would use the include function to do this. PHP Tutorial - Include File
