Niche Websites vs. List Building?

Hi there,

I would like to get back into building niche websites as an extra side of passive income but am curious if I should just focus more on list building instead.

I already do have an email list and a couple of different blogs but always loved the idea of ranking niche sites and making affiliate commissions.

Any advice on which direction I should go?

After you've established your niche. Now's the time to build your list, build your relationship with that list and build quality, targeted content and offers to that list. Don't delay ... or worse, ignore these vital steps.

    why not both?

Build your niche sited and share to your list.

Nice thing about niche sites is once you set them up then just run in the background producing sales 24/7

  • I highly recommend getting those sites made, and it guess along the way, during your free time, start focusing on your list. It doesn't even have to be at the same time. It could be building a niche site for a week, and then focusing on list building the next.

Building a niche site does take time to do, but the nice thing is that once one is setup, you can use whatever time that you have to do whatever you want while you earn that passive income from those niche sites.

You can also try building a niche site so that YOU CAN build your list in those niches, if that seems viable for you.

    My advice?

    Do both.

And pick a niche that you LOVE.

(A lot of people say it doesn't matter... But it does)...

Want to know how I know?

Because I've had DOZENS of niche sites over the years...

And I let them all wane and die. Regardless of profitability...

Because I simply grew tired of maintaining them.

So... Pick a niche (or niches) that you love...

And prepare to build something that lasts a lifetime.

    Not just a few seasons.

My $.02, and I wish you well.

      Great advice everyone...

How much maintenance goes into keeping these sites "alive" and ranked high in Google?

Keeping them alive can be cheap. For example you can use wordpress cms for all of them.

Ranking high is a different ball game. That could take lot of effort. Onsite and offsite.

You should do both at the same time. In other words, when are building a niche site, you should also be building a list. That way, you have two ways to generate income (search engines and the list) instead of just one.

No reason not to do both ! And use them to compliment each other

Email marketing to a list is just one part of a business model. If it works well with your business model then fine, if not then there is no reason you need to use it.

However, many IM'ers like building a list whether or not it is essential to their success, because it acts as an insurance policy in case a Google update kills their website traffic. If you built a list, then even if your traffic dies, you can continue making sales to the list.

So email marketing does have a certain appeal in that it is less risky than regular organic SEO traffic business models.

  • Hello Evan

My advice is, first find your niche, build a website of excellent quality and just completed the website with parts list creation.

I echo those that have already replied. Do both. I would say build up your niche site into a decent authority site and use to build a list.

This vs. That, Then vs. Now

Get rid of the vs. Do one or the other, preferably both. get off the fence and make a decision. We can't make it for you.

It's always better to focus on list building. In fact, it should be a prime goal no matter what business model you chose for your mainstream income or extra income.

You always have an option to segment your lists as per the context. And if a mail is suitable to send to multiple lists, why not to send it to those lists instead of just one?
