High Traffic Site Need Hosting Advice

Hello all, currently my site has went rather viral and traffic has jumped from around 100,000 impressions per day to just over 5 million per day and at times the site is running slow and even goes offline completely.

I am currently using bluehost and run the site on their standard VPS so I definitely need to upgrade.

Can someone point me in the right direction for what I need such as a dedicated server or something? My site has random traffic spikes depending on how viral the content goes as some articles can get 20K+ visits other can go viral and get 1 million + visits so traffic is spiking randomly and need hosting that can handle this.

Any advice is welcome thank you.

    Hi.

I think you're right in saying that you'll need a dedicated server to cope with the high volume of traffic your site's getting. I've just looked at the Hostgator packages and I can't see any that would be sufficient.

Easyspace do a dedicated hosting package called 'The Beast' that might be worth checking out.

Good luck in finding the package that best suits your needs. It sounds like your site is doing amazingly well btw!

Thanks for the advice, I have hired a developer and server admin to move me to a dedicated server with choopa so all should be good once that is complete!

The traffic spike is definitely a learning curve ha.

It's time to leave budget hosts (Bluehost, yuck), and start to look at quality.
I would strongly urge you to look at LiquidWeb. Get a managed cloud VPS or dedicated.
If you go cheap, your site may die from slowness or downtime. Don't risk it.

Given your user profile, you might want to consider a cloud-based solution rather than using a dedicated server. You'd definitely need someone technical to help set this up and administer this, however (though the same holds true for a dedicated server and really even for a VPS). We use AWS, but there are plenty of other providers as well: Rackspace, Azure and DigitalOcean come to mind. But the advantage to a cloud-based model (if implemented correctly) is that you can sale up your infrastructure as your demand increases and scale down your infrastructure as demand decreases. You can even automate this process (as we did), so that as the load increases on your site more servers are spun up automatically. Depending on your needs, you might also want to look at a full page cache like Varnish to speed up your responses and reduce the load on your webservers.

Wow! What is your source of traffic? That is a whole pile of traffic, is it free or paid traffic?

A Bluehost VPS is handling 5 million impressions a day?

No it wasn't handling it at all, it crashes and site was going offline however the server is still counting the traffic and the pages its coming into. When talking with bluehost tech they estimated the numbers (which I have no idea how they done that? ssh he said).

Been on liquidweb dedicated approx 9 hours now and have just over 1,2 million impressions with 260K+ uniques and its doing fine. Running via cloudflare CDN as well.

Thanks for all the input, in the end it was between choopa and liquidweb and decided with liquidweb. Its been a learning curve actually understanding processors, ram and gb which has all now sunk in, least now when I go buy a new all in one desktop I understand all that jargon as well now!
