Which blogs have been more successful for traffic generation? Niche topics or broad topics?
I personally have had a mixed experience when it comes to selecting topics. So what works best for blog? Niche or broad topics?

  • As always, the answer is not black and white

In (very) general terms, the wider the niche, the bigger the audience and therefore the larger the traffic.

HOWEVER - because you are not sure exactly what interests that traffic, whatever you offer them in terms of products or services will only attract a small proportion of those viewers.

So high traffic - low conversion

So looking at this from the other side - the narrower the niche, the fewer the people who it will interest and therefore visit your blog.

HOWEVER - you know exactly what interests the visitors and therefore it should be relatively straight forward to present them with offers that will be of interest them. Thus resulting in a far greater percentage taking you up on the offer.

Here we have low traffic - high conversion

As I say, as ever it is not just a matter of which type of blog will attract the most traffic

I hope this helps and I wish you all the best with your online adventure

The Beginner's Friend gave you a good summary of pros and cons.

I would suggest whatever niche (broad or narrow) you do choose, you pick one you actually know and care about. Better to pick something you can do a really expert job on than something that you think has potential on its own but YOU do not have any strong grasp on.

Definitely a niche, but anything I choose must be able to write valuable content, people do not like limited information, therefore they do not like the person supplying it.

Niche is always a better choice, assuming we are talking about a niche, which has a decent audience, say at least 5 figures/month search volume for the main keywords.

Yes, you want to narrow down your target market, but you don't want to be marketing to a tiny micro-niche with very limited opportunities, so balance is the key.

The bigger the market (niche) the better. If you're just getting started out I would enter a market where there are tons of buyers. Competition doesn't matter and tell you the truth the more competition there is the better. A lot of competition means you're in a market where there is money to be made. Trying to find some tight/hidden niche where there is no competition is probably not the best use of your time. I always go broad when picking out a niche. Just my two cents...

Generally speaking, I would say niche blogs work best because of how the search engines work. However, "lifestyle" blogs are more general in nature and get lots of traffic and make lots of money. If you're not going into the "lifestyle" kind of blog, I'd stick with a niche one.

I like niche blogs, but sometimes you can get too narrow of a niche. So narrow that it will be almost impossible to get traffic.

Also, make sure that the niche you choose has traffic that spends money online and make sure there are affiliate offers available as well.
