What skills should an Internet Marketer MUST possess to earn Money Online

Hi guys! *Sorry for the extra word in the title* :

Today I would like to put the million-dollar question that most of you will probably answer in a number of different ways. What I would like to know is what skills should an Internet Marketer possess to earn Money Online that could be used in one's professional life as well? I am mainly thinking about FREE Online courses(w/h paid certificates) and other crash courses that could be used on one's CV. In this way,one would not end up learning stuff that he/she cannot prove on paper but instead one would have both the skill and proof for if IM does not work out in the long term.

I am looking forward to your kind and educated input!

Warriors,you rock!

Cheers

To earn money online, one needs advertising skills which involves many aspects. Networking is another factor one could apply to build lasting relationships. Marketing research to understand the niche properly also functions as a good skill.

You must first find your niche, the better something you're passionate about, then find your business model and make it successful, with many trials, and replicable.

I'd focus more on CHARACTER TRAITS than skills...

    Skills can be learned...

Character is harder to come by.

Which character traits help you become successful in this field?

    Patience

    Perseverance

    Integrity

    Willingness to SACRIFICE

    Empathy

That's an interesting question. If I understood it correctly you seem to be asking whether there could be any concrete evidence that would prove one's expertise in IM (like a 'college' degree or something).

As far as I'm aware the industry doesn't have any formal training or 'internationally recognized' certification courses you can take. However, there are certain institutions that offer IT related services that could assist you in IM i.e website design, SEO, Google Adwords etc.

But I must add that you'll have to PROVE the relevance of that skill in the industry. And the only way to do that is by experience - which is gotten by the people who use their skills to SELL in IM.

IM is one career where you'll be paid to learn and to do that you'll have to use/obtaining a skill that offers enough value to other people's lives.

Depending on what you're doing, I found that being able to communicate clearly in English was a huge asset. You can always hire people to do voice recording or write for you, but for dealing directly with people being able to understand their needs and communicate your solutions. That's unfortunate for many, because the world is full of non-native speakers who are struggling in a mostly English medium.

Marketing is a very exciting career. You have to constantly come up with creative ways to catch people’s attention and create enthusiasm for a product line or a service.
You need to develop solid marketing plans and utilize resources to get those plans rolling and actually producing some good results.

Yes, marketing does follow some basic guidelines and you can base your decisions off of what has worked for others in the past. But, what sets Internet Marketing apart from other types of marketing careers is that you don’t have to spend years studying the skills that you need. You don’t have to spend years at a school to obtain a degree before you can have success.

Skills that are important, from my experience include:
      1. The ability to watch, observe, and apply what you learn from others to your own business. If you can replicate what successful marketers are doing, you will also make money.
      2. The skill that is generally called "driving traffic." You have to be able to push web buying prospects to your offers. There are many, many ways do it, but every niche is unique and different so you need to develop the ability to experiment, test, refine, and verify campaigns.
      3. Copywriting so you can draft compelling offers. This skill can be learned over time; but often it's best to hire out your copywriting tasks. You will either have to produce it yourself or hire someone to do it for you. It's critical to direct selling.
      4. Interacting effectively with prospects and customers. Customer service is critical and often spells success or disaster. People want to be treated fairly, like human beings, and they want prompt action on their own situations. Learn how to deal with customers and treat them as you would want to be treated.
      5. Become a finisher. Learn how to complete projects, campaigns, research, offers, products, etc on time. So many people never finish what they start. Learn this one skill and you will be miles ahead of the competition no matter what market you enter.
      6. Persistence. It's both a skill and a character trait. Learn to persist at whatever you do. Don't be easily sidetracked. Don't give up when obstacles block your way. Go the extra mile and do the things that your competition isn't willing to do. The market will reward you for your extra effort.
      The very best to you,

      Steve

Absolutely. Always keep learning. Of course there's the possibility of information overload so it's best to stick to one thing and focus on that rather than going from zero to hero in a variety of avenues.

  • TobinBell, my question to you is why assume Internet marketing won't work out for you in the long-term?

While I agree with TJoseph that "the industry doesn't have any formal training or 'internationally recognized' certification courses you can take" I have found the following set of skills and knowledge useful when applying for jobs:
    - HTML coding (the sole reason I got one of the jobs!) - personally, I signed up for a Codeacademy course but there are lots of other free courses out there
    - willingness to take on new challenges
    - leadership skills
    - time management skills (many business schools offer time management courses)
    - being self-employed (one of my potential employers openly said that he liked the fact that I'm self-employed)
    -being able to show initiative
    - excellent communication skills (necessary when networking)
    -problem-solving skills
    - analytical skills (being able to analyse complicated data)
    - copywriting
    -fluency in English
    - team working skills
    -SEO
    - consistency/perseverance

    Best of luck!

Thanks,Sandra! The reason my tone might seem a little pessimistic is because I am still to earn my first dime doing IM.This is probably why I am curious about what skills I might lack that render me incapable of achieving my first sale.

I really liked your response.I will keep an eye out for coding and time-management courses.

      • Hi Tobin!
You're most welcome. Just a few months ago I was in a similar position.

Now, while I still wouldn't consider myself an expert by any standards I am making a full-time living thanks to affiliate marketing and my business just keeps getting better and better. Still the feeling of helplessness, frustration and confusion is very fresh in my mind.

In my humble opinion, one of the easiest ways to start making money online is to write product reviews. It doesn't involve high start up costs and if done well you can benefit from free traffic for years to come!

While HTML is a useful skill when applying for jobs it's less so when trying to make money online. I'd focus on list building, traffic generation or copywriting instead. If you asked me what one skill you should learn if you want to make money online but at the same time stand out when applying for jobs I'd probably say copywriting. That way you can keep your options open.

If you need any help just drop me a line. I'll try to help you the best I can.

        Good luck!

ACTION - Take action. It sounds simple but this is the most important of all success. Number two be able to sell. Frank Kern said the problem with most internet marketers is that they cant sell their way out of a cardboard box. So the formula is this Action + Selling = SUCCESS. Again, this sounds simple but most new marketers spend all their time and money buying products, not selling products.

I'll say something apparently boring .. planning.

I remember when Mark Cuban once said on 'Shark Tank' that when he first started as an entrepreneur, he was just one guy in an empty room with a telephone and he just called like mad and went door to door pitching one product after another. The entrepreneur's mindset. It's all about how much are you willing to sacrifice and how hard you're willing to work to make it.

I think you'd need to have a talent for writing as a marketer. Being able to communicate effectively and efficiently is very important in business. Most people dread picking up the phone and cold-calling. People prefer email marketing which is why being able to write with the ability to be convincing and selling your service/product is important. For example, If you're looking for clients for a new SEO business that you're launching, you would need to get on the phone or get to emailing. But you need to convince the potential client as to why they should choose YOU over all the other guys out there who probably have been calling them and offering them the same service. Rather than telling them what you can do, it's better to tell them exactly what you WILL do for them and what they can expect as a result.

I think marketers need to be able to see a trickle of positive results for their efforts in the early going in order to keep at it. It's sort of like a person trying to lose weight and becomes discouraged when the scale isn't moving even after a week or two of intense efforts. There's that first hurdle where people fall flat and don't have the patience to keep going forward. So definitely the right mindset (patience, drive, etc) is key.

Affiliate Marketing is a standout amongst the most adored and favored techniques for profiting on the web, but since it's so mainstream it's similarly aggressive. There's yet a normal achievement rate as low as 4 - 5% on the grounds that numerous beginners commit the error of hurrying trying to profit quicker. profiting Online resemble building a cash making machine, and you need to place all the right parts in the opportune spot at the ideal time. It's a Journey, not a challenge and really profiting is a workmanship that favors accuracy and planning.
