Why Can't I Connect the Dots?

I have been asking a few questions the past few days in the Warrior Forum to try to help me get launched on a path to real online earnings. I have received a number of really good suggestions as well as some that I feel were a kick in my pants. Let me tell you a little more about me and see if we can find some answers.
I have spent a career in retail management and and have done quite a few online business projects that have ground to a halt in the past year or two. I made a good income with an Ebay store selling rabbit hutches until the recession drove up shipping costs to a point I could not make money. I made a steady $30 to $40 a month from Ehow for articles that I wrote until they changed their format. I have numerous Ezine articles and had Expert Status there until article marketing bombed. I set up sites and pages using Bum Marketing Techniques and got top ranking in Google in a day or two until Google made their changes. I have numerous Facebook Fan Pages, some with 100 plus followers, several Twitter accounts with as many as 600 followers on just one of them. I have literally thousands of followers on multiple Pinterest boards, a half dozen Google + accounts, several Blogger blogs, a bunch of niche websites, some in hugely popular niches such as Raising Chickens, with lots of activity, and one of my favorites which is using Tumblr blogs with hundreds and hundreds of followers on each. I got 334 clicks to Clickbank just this past week from only one Tumblr blog, without a sale. I have been an Amazon affiliate for about 6 years, have accounts with ShareASale, Commission Junction and the Ebay Enterprise Network. I have advertised various campaigns on Bing, on Google and on Facebook. I have joined forums, explored niches, wrote blog posts, made squeeze pages, started email lists, blogged, wrote articles, gave away quality content, never spammed or did anything unethical to anyone else. In short, I have tried more than my share of projects and have not seen results in the past year or so.
Beyond that, I am a burned out Baby Boomer that has a family to provide for, I work before work and after work on online endeavors, then work to pay bills in between, have retirement looming and really need to create a sustainable income - Now!
Major companies can take out an ad (with big budgets and name recognition of course) and make a PPC Ad campaign work - BUT I just Googled "Car Insurance" and the top ad in Google is for Car.Insure.com followed by AmicaCoverage.com, not State Farm, Geico or Progressive. The ones that come up first do not have name recognition, so how can they afford to pay the kind of money that a keyword click for Car Insurance would cost on Google?
It must be worth advertisers money and time to set a budget, target the right words, and run their campaign. Brick and Mortar companies expect ROI Today, not in 6 months or a few years. Small business owners need to know if they spend money to obtain any business goal, it must provide a return or they will not be in business very long.
With that said, I ask those that wish to share their knowledge, the following questions:

Which PPC network is best to advertise on without unlimited time or money to burn - Bing, Google, Facebook or something else?

As an Affiliate Marketer, which type program (not asking for your trade secrets) would you suggest for me to promote? An affiliate offer? A Clickbank offer? An Amazon product? A Pay Per Lead offer? Some other type offer? (what is the easiest to make money with?)

What groups or interest categories offer the best opportunities to sell to online and what type products to they typically buy that way. (again, not your trade secrets) For example, do lawyers typically buy office furniture online? Do most nurses order uniforms online? What are some product lines that typically outperform others when offered in PPC ads? You get the picture.
I do not wish to start another blog, or social media account. I am passionate about many things, but have not been monetarily successful by creating and giving good content and down the road asking for a sale that did not come. I cannot spend endless money to someday make money because I have bills to pay ongoing.
I want an affiliate product with a track record of making sales, with a advertising network that delivers targeted prospects at a reasonable cost, and to a group that has a track record of making similar purchases online. I will gladly spend $1000 a week on ads if I will generally make my investment back and have a profit left over, but I will not waste any more time or money.
If you have done well online and wish to share some of your knowledge to help out a fellow marketer that has somehow missed the right opportunities and has not been able to "connect the dots", then I wholeheartedly say Thank You and look forward to your suggestions!

You appear to be a Jack or Jane of all trades and a master at none. Find something you know and love and devote 100% of your effort to that one thing. You are going to get dozens of posts from people telling you exactly what you should do because it's what they do. They know nothing about you. Ignore them completely. Only your inner-voice can't point you in the right direction for your own future. There is no one here that can do that for you. No one.

Also, please ignore all of the post that tell you that you just need to 'believe in yourself.' Not one of those people are going to pay your rent when you are on the verge of being homeless. "Believe in yourself' is code for, "I have no idea, but I love to hear myself talk and to feel good about myself because I believe I actually helped someone when in reality I have done nothing truly helpful at all."

Frank, the fact of the matter is that if a person wants to achieve extraordinary success as an Entrepreneur/Internet Marketer they're going to have to believe in themselves and what they trying to accomplish. That is especially true during the more challenging times such as when dealing with setback and "failure."

I don't see anything wrong with people offering each other encouragement. What's your suggestion for supporting people who don't believe in themselves, Frank?

Not one of those people are going to pay your rent when you are on the verge of being homeless.
You keep saying that. And it's not our responsibility to help them through that unless they're someone we know personally or there is a way to help them through this Forum or their website. Something to remember is that you're not going to pay their rent either.

"Believe in yourself' is code for, "I have no idea, but I love to hear myself talk and to feel good about myself because I believe I actually helped someone when in reality I have done nothing truly helpful at all."
The reason why I offer people support is because I know there's a very good chance that someone reading (if not the OP) will remember something I have shared and that will ultimately help them put all the pieces together to from new more empowering beliefs. That's the way we learn - from listening to other people and appreciating how they see "The World."

I would never waste a moment of my life supporting someone that doesn't already believe in themselves, without being encouraged to do so.
You keep saying that. And it's not our responsibility to help them through that unless they're someone we know personally or there is a way to help them through this Forum or their website.
It's certainly not my responsibility. You can choose to spend your time any way you see fit. I regard every moment I have left on this planet as precious to me and I am extremely selective as to how I spend them. My way of helping people is to explain the truth about life as I have experienced it. There are two ways to approach changing your life. Ideas based on pure fact or those based on pie-in-the-sky delusion. If proffer the former and ignore the latter. They can accept that or ignore it. I couldn't care less.

Additionally, allow me to quote from a recent post of mine that will clarify my personal feelings on 'believing in yourself.'

One thing I want to clear up. Many folks get down on me because I ridicule the "Just believe in yourself and you will be a tremendous success" crowd. They miss my point, completely. They come at it from the idea that it doesn't matter what you do or don't know, or what you do or don't actually do. They truly feel that believing, wishing, hoping and praying has a concrete effect on your life. It does not!

If - and that is a BIG IF - if you determine you are serious, if you research your market, if you attempt to learn everything there is to learn, if you work as hard as possible every day, if you maintain a balance between work, family and friends, if you pay attention to your physical and mental health, if you are honest in your dealings with others, if you help others along the way where you are able, if you keep your eye on the goal, if you don't set those goals at an unrealistic level and if you don't allow anyone to deter you, then and only then will a healthy belief in yourself actually mean something that can serve as a rod of strength that can help you when things could be going better. No one believes in themselves more than I do. It is the driving force that has kept me alive through sickness, homelessness and great loss, both personal and financial. I know that I can do anything I put my mind to. I know that because I have accomplished it, not merely believed that I could. There isn't a person that I personally know that has done more with so little in the way of natural gifts than I have. So believing is good, once you know that you possess personal attributes that warrant that belief. Anything else is just, well - you know - applesauce! :-)

Before you can believe you can do anything you have to actually set out and do something. Otherwise you are simply playing pocket pool with your brain.

The reason why I offer people support is because I know there's a very good chance that someone reading (if not the OP) will remember something I have shared and that will ultimately help them put all the pieces together to from new more empowering beliefs. That's the way we learn - from listening to other people and appreciating how they see "The World."
Thanks for that, oh wise one. At my age I really don't need anyone explaining to me how life is supposed to work. You can pull that crap on the twenty-something crowd, but you'll forgive me if I pass on your rules of the road. My reality is based on a lifetime of applying real world techniques to finding my place in the world in an effort to create my own success and happiness. If I were still looking for a way to achieve those goals, your precepts might have some value to me. Since I have managed to achieve my goals without them, you'll hopefully understand that they have no value to me, in any way whatsoever.

If I were looking for a preacher, I'd be in church.

I appreciate the detailed and honest response, Frank.

I'm not here to argue with you, just presenting my opinion. (Which I believe has value.) In retrospect though I probably shouldn't have posted it.

Two things stood out to me about your OP: you were making good money selling rabbit hutches, and you raising chickens site is getting good traffic.

I've done a lot of the things you mentioned and got hit by the same roadblocks. Found a way to make money, then BOOM they chaged what worked. It forced me to do a lot of soul searching to find out what it was I really wanted to do and what I was really good at. It made me realize that I needed to not rely so much on things like article farm sites and Google ranking and really focus on what I was good at. But then I had to figure out what I was good at.

I wrote a reply on another thread here: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...l#post10153726

Which details what I did, how I discovered what I was good at and how I ran with it and turned it into a career. It's really long, over 1,000 words. But read it and you'll see how I stumbled around until I fell into the thing that worked for me. It might help you to organize your our situation into something that works.

now, reading your OP and then combining that with what I did as stated in that post I linked to, if it was me, if I was you, I'd take the rabbit hutches and the chicken site and I'd run with those things, because it sounds like you are good at them.

What I would do, is figure out a way to continue selling rabbit hutches but do it with less work and less shipping costs and, to me the answer is, instead of selling the hutch itself, why not write a book on how-to make rabbit hutches, sell it via Amazon Kindle, and then link that book to your raising chickens site.

Next I would expand the site, to be "Raising Chickens, Rabbits, and Other Small Livestock For Your Homestead" instead of just chickens (if you read the post I linked to, you'll know why I spun it this way too - homesteader here, my primary audience is homesteaders). Now add sections about raising rabbits, and then also other small animals such as ducks, turkeys, goats, etc.

Now, here's where the money maker is: write a set of How To Raise Livestock For Your Backyard/Homestead BOOKS for Kindle. Make each book at least 75 pages long, strive for 150 pages, and focus on a different animal each book (if you read my post, you know where I'm going with this and how it'll make money. The post actually tells you how to do this.) Make one book on raising chickens, one on raising rabbits...heck, if you can build rabbit hutches, you can build free range mini-coops for chickens, so write a book on how to build those as well. Become known as an expert in building mini shelters for small livestock, and link all those books into the side bar on your raising chickens site.

It sounds to me like you already have the traffic to your site and you already have the skill to build mini-shelters for small animals, I'd definitely combine those and look into writing books to sell to the people visiting your site, while expanding the site to similar topics of interest to those same visitors.

....I'm not sure if that's something you'd want to do or not, but, that's the way I'd connect the dots if it was me.

There is no simple answer to your inquiries, you come across as someone who is jaded, and assumes many things. Some people are good at business, while others lack the spark, the ability to connect with people and motivate them to buy. It is not so much a question of which affiliate product, or vendor - it is how you present these items to the people. You seem to be blaming changes online for your predicament, I would look within, those who cannot self reflect are doomed to keep repeating the same folly.

There are many platforms that allow you to earn good money writing still, as long as you can write relevant, interesting material, not just 'How To' dry factoids. The 'kick in the pants' comments could be of value to you, rather than dismiss everything that is not directly of utility, take them on-board and assess if there is something to learn. Being a baby boomer means you have certain experiences, but also possibly 'set ideas' about how things work - be prepared to re-assess, and actually change your approach.

How has it all worked out for you so-far? Not too good, then you must change things, learn new ways to seeing, new 'paradigms' (the only word that will do the job).
You are seeking a 'handyman' styled fix, it is not going to help you, you need to completely re-learn your approaches. That is my response, take it or leave it, it's up to you.

Connecting the dots usually means to draw a line from one point to another to reach destination.

What you are doing is more like drawing lines on a polka dot background and going in circles.

You've tried to do it all - and probably worked hard at that. You've had some successes but learned the reality of marketing offline or online - things change and you have to adapt. More than that - most of us don't do all things you've listed above - we don't have that kind of time/energy/interest.

That said - you ended a thread you started yesterday by announcing you would be starting THIS thread. That's crazy and unproductive. I get the impression of frantic and hectic rather than organized and productive.

You've had good replies and you need to stop the repetitive questions you've asked daily this week and take in the advice people are giving you.

You don't have to do it all - you need to do one or two things WELL. You need to provide something a certain market needs. You need to focus on what YOU know and where YOU can help people.

If something quit working due to shipping costs or google change - that's out of your control. Forget those things - they are irrelevant now. The only lesson to learn in those instances is WHEN to quit and move on.

      Hello ToMakeMoney,

I agree with DRP's suggestion to FOCUS. What's missing from your extensive sharing are:

      1. An optimized sales funnel - where visitors are presented with 2 or more related products at different price points.

      2. A recurring income product.

      3. High ticket items.

Those three online marketing tools can be applied to any niche. So if you do not want to try anything new, you could incorporate the above tools into one of your current niches.

I trust of course that you know how to drill down from a general niche to a specific niche and what to look for vis a vis monthly searches and competition to decide what niche to choose.

      Exactly!

If you write articles the same way you've written your original post, then no wonder you "haven't had success" with bum marketing...

Have you thought about using paragraphs? It's almost impossible to read massive blocks of text with no spacing.

Forget about PPC, unless you have a budget to burn without thinking about it.

Whatever you're going to do, just think about how you are going to generate traffic and whether you see yourself doing that for 3-6 months to come. Normally, it has to be something that interests you or you're passionate about, so that will help you to stick with it, despite seeing very little results in the beginning.

Why not put all that effort into writing a book on Kindle, preferably a fictional book and with an idea which could lead to a series of books. There are many effective courses showing you how to market a book with Kindle. If you think you could write the book, why not try it?

Look at some of the people who have sold very well on Kindle and buy one of their books and read it all the way through, if you think you could write as well or better than them, then give it a try. Stop doing everything else and concentrate solely on the book. You will probably succeed!

I won't point out some of key issues others have brought up about being jaded and focusing as you can see their comments (some good advice there).

As for the string of bad luck, you need to realize that the world constantly changes. Just because you put lots of effort into something today does not mean it will produce for you till the end of time without modifications.

Those two things being said, here is what I would do in your situation.

      1. Choose a niche you are passionate about. Setup a website that jives well with your chosen niche. Currently this seems to blog type sites or content focused sites. Generate content 3-4 times a week to start and then slow to 2-3 if you want more free time. Drive traffic (guest posting, forum posting, Youtube videos, articles, etc.) and set up some kind of monatization scheme (ads, newletter with affiliate links, sales funnel, etc). At this point you should be seeing results in even as little as a month.

      2. The next step is to stick to the main plan you setup in part 1 and continually improve it vs going out and starting something else. Start trying out some other traffic methods and diversify so you don't fall into the trap you had with your earlier businesses and lose all of your traffic one day. I would even go as far as to say you should even diversify your site presence in that niche and not just rely on single blog, but that is entirely up to your time commitment. The key here is to put most of your time and love towards your main niche and site and diversify so no one single event can take you out.

      3. Once you get to a point that your site is producing and has 2-4 strong traffic sources, you can look at starting something else to bump your income levels. Remember that the real benefit of internet business in not the whole "work from home" deal. That is a side effect in my mind. The real benefit of internet based businesses is the ability to scale. With this in mind, I wouldn't go out and start a completely new business in a completely different niche. I would look within my current niche or supplementary/sub niches so that you can use your now successful new business to scale into your next business. This will cut down on your startup time and let you make more money with a minimal increase in effort you were already putting into the first business. Note that I did not say you can stop putting effort into the first business. To make money, you need to keep everything running. Once you have money, you can substitute that for your time and effort via outsourcing if you want.

This is just one plan you could follow. Search around the forum, especially the War Room a bit and you will find tons of stuff to try if this one doesn't fit or seems incomplete. Just don't try them all! Good luck and I hope you can figure something that makes you happy and can provide for you!

Just because someone gives someone good advice doesn't mean they need to follow it. It could be something that may not be a good fit or interest for that person. If I was looking for advice, I would look for it from many and then choose which seems like would work best for me. Just blindly making statements like online marketing isn't for you, just because the OP says he has gotten good advice, but hasn't reacted in the way you deem correct amazes me.

When people start threads, get good advice, and then start more threads on the EXACT SAME THING, it is not the advice that's holding them back.

And I didn't state anything blindly- just read his story above. He used to be able to rank sites in two days with link spam, keyword stuffing and other black hat methods, so now he is searching for an equally simple way to "cheat the system" without putting forth any time or effort.

He doesn't want to pay for ads, he doesn't want to put in any sweat equity or take anyone else's advice, so what does that leave? Quitting. That's the only sensible option.

I guess it's a matter of how one reads between the lines. I just didn't take way what you did and I don't pass judgement on what they have done in the past be it white hat or black hat. I just looked at it as someone that has tried many things and just hasn't had success and while still wanting to continue is probably waiting for that one thing that makes the most sense before taking action.

I guess I understand where your coming from, but thought that QUIT, was a bit extreme.

Webster's Dictionary defines the word "Forum" in several ways including:

          - public meeting place for open discussion
          - a medium (as a newspaper or online service) of open discussion or expression of ideas

          kk075

If I misunderstood that Warrior Forum is not a place to discuss ideas, simply a place to kick someone that you don't know anything about for the fun of it, then I am sorry. I thought that a positive discussion of ideas to help other members is a good thing. Your comments are not only unfair and not welcome, but you make many assumptions, such as using Black Hat methods, which I did not participate in. If General Motors knew a trick to get higher ranking in search engines without cheating or breaking rules, do you think they would? You bet your online income they would!
If you do not want to help others seeking advice, then why don't you keep your narrow minded thoughts to yourself and learn to not pass judgement on people or situations that you know nothing about. I wanted the suggestions of others that have been successful, or lucky, or just there first and want to share their ideas - not a lecture from someone on a soapbox looking for attention.

What are you talking about? I gave you great advice and I also explained why the stuff you did a few years back doesn't work anymore. That's why you can't connect the dots...you want fast and simple with something that doesn't work that way anymore. Others offered a variety of advice in another thread, yet you basically came here and said that wasn't good enough....somehow this forum owed you even more.

The answer here is simple- if you won't invest time on building a website the right way and you're not going to invest any money in advertising, then you are 100% wasting your time. That's not an opinion, it's a fact.

I can tell you what I have been doing and has worked for me since day 1, but it's not for everyone.
I say more or less the same thing when members ask what works, so I'm just going to copy/past a post I made, as I'm too lazy tonight to write something from scratch.

CPA lead generation combined with list building/buying.

With leads there is nothing to buy (no credit card required), all you need to do is get people to fill out a form, So conversion rates tend to be higher. I typically stick with leads that have a make, get or save money angle to them (but not 100% exclusively), because they tend to have mass appeal to the general public, so a high volume of prospects exists. There are many good leads that pay $20-$60 and more depending on the vertical, that work well on front-end campaigns.

I generate 100% of my traffic through email and simply because building list / buying data gives you an asset that you can market to over and over. I spend zero money, unless it creates the direct collection of email data. This allows me to build large cost effective mailing lists and in the end, every thing then comes down to how many messages do I need to send to break-even on my list acquisition costs, when should I promote a new offer and how aggressive can I get away with being, which all is achieved by closely watching your stats.

One plus with list generation lists is that you don't have to try and build a relationship with your lists, as it's really not going to make any significant difference in your conversions. So there's less work. You just send offers till they unsubscribe, which I'm sure most think is bad, but a good percentage will stick around for years. At the very beginning I do try and indoctrinate users with preframing the company as an authority on providing the best internet offers and do a couple static things in the message to add some professionalism.

The biggest downside for anyone just starting out is that most networks want around $1K per week to get weekly payouts, so till you can do that, you will have to be able to front all you expenses until you get paid. Also you want to sign up with many networks, so you can test offers between them and offers that are similar to find which really generate the most income. So this thins out how much you are generating between the networks and makes the $1K each harder. Once your rolling this becomes a non issue.

Anyway, that's the short of the long and isn't for everyone. But done right, all B.S. aside can produce
    6-7 figures.

I was close to having a similar story to you but the difference has been to take time out and develop my mindset to set myself up for success first.

For example, there are a gazillion things to make money with online and what's worked for me in focusing on 1 or at max combining the two you're most passionate about (not necessarily what makes the most money initially).

    my two pennies.

You sound highly disgruntled. Although i must admit, i've had my *moments* regarding online marketing in general .

Nevertheless, focus and settle down, and just focus on one concept. To make things easy for yourself, find a small rabid niche, use PPC to reach these people, and ONLY use this method.

This way when sales start rolling in, you can actually start on building the 80% of your business operations (backend sales, affiliate marketing, email marketing, continuity programs, memberships, automation, etc).

If all that fails.... go sell on ebay.

    Woah!

You are all over the place.

I honestly think that you yourself have no idea what you want. It sounds harsh. It is, I know, but pussyfooting around the problem won't solve it for you.

If you don't know yourself what it is that you want, specifically, then no one can help you.

Figure out what you like, what you are good at and what you could see yourself doing and then go and do that and commit to it 100%

    Good luck

In your circumstance where you obviously currently have funds available your best investment would be to find a mentor that you could work with one on one.

With your experience it is highly likely that you are 95% of the way there already. Having somebody pick your business apart with you often reveals tiny little things that you are missing, and that are simply solved.

All the advice in the world, particularly from some of the people on here, won't help you move forward in the same way that somebody focusing on your business will.

I agree with Nick Barton that your best option at this point is to find a mentor. You already have the skills and experience, you just need someone to help you connect those dots.

But things change. You just got to keep up with the changes and keep going and modify a few things as you go. It's normal. The world is not static; everything is evolving.

If you want to make consistent money online, you need to treat it like a proper business - exactly like you would run a brick and mortar business.
Think in terms of business plan, investment, effort, ROI & reinvesting etc.

The mistake a lot of people make is to treat IM like a hobby - putting in hours when they can afford free time, hopping from method to method, spending more time reading other people's sales pages and success stories and buying every shiny object that gets launched.

Remember, the only way you can succeed is by creating real, lasting value and getting people to see and invest in that value.
