Where do you get good developers for large projects?

I have a web app idea and want to have it developed. The main problem is that I have not had too much success finding good developers for fairly large projects. This project would likely take 3 or 4 months for one developer to finish. I would estimate it would cost $20,000 to $50,000.

I know that most on here are marketers/entrepreneurs (that don't do their own development) so I thought this might be a good place to ask.

Has anyone here had success finding great developers that don't quit before the project is done? What websites are the best for a large project? Odesk? Elance? Local?

How do you hire good developers?

I'd be willing to bet that you could not only find the answer to your question, but also someone willing to do the job if you moved this question down to the "Programming" section.

I use elance primarily, but I suspect any of the major ones would be similar.

There are no real guarantees that they won't flake out on you, but the key to finding quality people is to really read the reviews. Focus only on the ones that have directly relevant experience to your project, then go for the best combination of quantity and quality reviews (that cover the skills you need) over the longest amount of time.

Sounds like a project for a FIRM that uses elance and freelancer to get jobs. Start there. Don't bother with Odesk.

Agreed. At this level, you need an organization with the "Oomph" and infrastructure to handle your project, not a fly-by-night solopreneur.

You need someone with E&O insurance, proven skill/past projects under their belt, and who has demonstrated they're going to be sticking around.

An IT firm that bills around $50-60K a month and employs 3-5 people is the right fit.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I posted the project on Elance, Freelancer, and Upwork. Elance had the best quality applicants, followed by Upwork. I'm sorry to say that Freelancer did not have any quality developers who applied for the job but that has been my experience.

I have usually been using Upwork and even with this large project I received one or two quality bids. But the quality was even higher on Elance and I was able to find a developer who is able to think clearly about the project, has a wide knowledge of all the technologies and has good solutions for each aspect. He only does large projects! His bid is on the low end of the range that I gave in my first post but it was higher than anyone else!

Thanks again for all that replied!

If you don't have any idea on how to program then it's best to find trusted developers first by testing it out on small projects.

By doing this, you will be able to build a relationship with your developer and know the skillset without committing on large projects.

I am a web developer myself and worked on several big projects but still gets scared on working on big project simply because of the uncertainty that working hundreds of hours on a project and in the end the project owner will just back out and the developers don't get paid.

I suggest that you divide the project into different phases in a way that it can be completed in a month or weeks per phase.

Once the phase completed you have the option whether to continue working with the same developer or find better dev that suits your needs.

This will also give the developer the assurance that they will get paid at the same time.

I mostly use Elance for many of my outsourcing needs. I have hear that UpWork (formerly Odesk) is quite good for this type of work. However, I did utilize Odesk for some content creation and was not happy with the freelancers I attracted. And, of course, the parent of Warrior Forum... Freelancer.

I agree with @Marked09. As a developer I would have concerns about getting paid on a large project from a 1 or 2 person operation with which I had zero to little familiarity. Flaking out works on both sides. Better to build the relationship one small segment of the project at a time.

Right now Elance and Upwork are the largest freelancing platform , you have large project and you need to find a good developer.
Your project can be completed by two ways
    1. Hourly base
    2. Fixed price.

Elance is good for fixed price job here you can find individual developers as well as good team of developers.
Upwork is good for hourly based project , here you can only interact with Individual.

    Thanks

I think elance is the best in this regard.

odesk which is now upwork is also a good option but you have to check feedback from real buyers before hiring seller from upwork.

    Regards!

I'm a big fan of Upwork (formerly Odesk and Elance)!

But don't expect to put a quick job post up and then have the a great developer come running. You will need to put a lot of time into your posting and then will need to sift your way through A LOT of rubbish to find a decent freelancer.

Make sure you ask them for samples of previous work - Obvious I know.

Upwork and Elance this are the two places to find a good developers not just good but high talented as well. but I think you know that good developers cost more money. for example if do a search on this two website for the top freelancer developer you will find that there some of them cost $50/hour but this are the people who know what they are doing you can contact anyone and tell him about your project.

For this big project, I would like to recommend you to hire local workers. Most of the time we can see the Online virtual workers work as a part time worker. Expert worker do both Local Job & freelancing works. So You should hire local freelancer to compel this project fairly. Thanks

Involve in your local developers community. Events like Startup Weekend will help you look for talent. That way you can know the developer team in person and communication will be more fluid and faster.

You probably have a Facebook account. Send a shout out to your friends and see if anyone knows a programmer that can help you with this. They may even have experience working with the person or company.
