'Putting all your eggs in one basket' or investing in a single entity. Most people also make the mistake of thinking that online marketing will make them a ton of money in a month or two, when in fact it takes years. Although i think that the biggest mistake made is the fact that some people may quit, when they truly have a chance to create something, an asset, from which they can benefit from for the rest of their lives.

The biggest of them all is not building email lists.
After all is said and done, you can start again with your email list - if you had one.
Email lists should be your first concern in Internet Marketing as it is with ANY business.

One of the biggest mistakes I made when starting out was getting stuck in
"learning mode" and not applying what was being taught.

I would buy course after course, trying a little bit here and there, but never
taking enough action to see the results I was after....

Well enough is enough already, stop looking for all the answers before you start!

You do have to put in the work to make progress each and every day, so go out
and start working on building your business.

Some call it " Paralysis of Analysis" ... always analyzing and trying to learn more and more; trying to completely perfect it all before starting out...only to end up never completing the learning/analysis, never convinced to get started. Never starting out on an outlined success path. This has been one of my serious mistakes.

Waiting to get things PERFECT before starting.

Most of us WAIT until we see that everything is ready before we start doing something, quoting directly from an article I read few days ago:

"If you’re working on something important, then you’ll never feel ready. A side effect of doing challenging work is that you’re pulled by excitement and pushed by confusion at the same time."

You’re bound to feel uncertain, unprepared, and unqualified. But let me assure you of this: what you have right now is enough. You can plan, delay, and revise all you want, but trust me, what you have now is enough to start. It doesn’t matter if you’re trying to start a business, lose weight, write a book, or achieve any number of goals… who you are, what you have, and what you know right now is good enough to get going."

To me, the biggest mistake I made in IM is that I always compare myself to other IMers, especially those 5 figure and 6 figure IMers. And, this makes me feel myself small. As a result, I always end up not doing anything because I thought whatever I did, I was not comparable to others.

In fact, all those 5 figure and 6 figure IMers, I believe now they were standing at where I am now; their 5 - 6 figure income did not come-by suddenly; this is the accumulation of their trial and error experiences, and they filter out the things that dont work and pick only the things that work. The key here: DO IT! No matter it is right or wrong, it is part of the learning process.

'Don't hope for it, but work for it.' This is the best motivational quote I heard this year. thanks.

Hopping from idea to idea after only a few days. Never learning one method and getting it to pay off. Every time you hop from shiny object to shiny object you go back to zero.

    Here's how growth really works.

People THINK it happens linearly. That's the red line.

    It doesn't.

Growth actually happens exponentially. That's the green line.

Meaning your beginning is low and slow.

    Nobody knows who you are.

They don't yet know to think of you as "The Person To Talk To" about your subject.

Your skill level is just starting out and growing.

Since you have the linear growth expectations, the actual results are disappointing.

The gap is the measurement of your disappointment.

    So you quit.

    Find another shiny object.

This is the process by which I have seen person after person in this forum chase shiny objects for YEARS and never get anything off the ground. Typical time to stick with an idea: three days.

What on earth can you get done in three days. (I'm not even asking the question.)

It takes longer than a few days or weeks or maybe even months to develop expertise in an area, and start to get known for it. Usually around the 90-day mark is when people start taking you seriously.

But if they knew you last week as the "SEO-pusher," and now you're presenting yourself as the "Listbuilding-pusher," and two months ago you appeared in front of them as the "Template Responsive website-pusher," how do you expect them to take you seriously?

    So don't hop.

Growth takes some time, not necessarily a long time, but some time to move up the exponential growth curve. Then you hit that point where the graph shoots up like a hockey stick.

    People know who you are.

They trust you will get results for what you say you do.

They know you haven't been hopping around from thing to thing.

Catalysts for this can be an event, like appearing on a popular TV show or podcast. The process can be accelerated. But if you give up after just a few days, you'll never get there.

    And that's the biggest mistake.

It's obvious that there are many "biggest" mistakes and most of us make several or all of them in our careers.

Here's one that doesn't get enough attention:

Not selling into demand. Demand for a given product or ebook or service is in a marketplace or it's not. No matter how hard you try and unless you're like Apple with a mega marketing budget, you're not going to create demand of something on a large scale.

Marketers often wonder why their "baby," their prized product, is not selling even if they are driving lots of traffic to their offer.

Whatever you sell, make certain before you release it, that there is an established market of people already wanting whatever it is!

The best to all of you,

        Steve

BY FAR, the number one mistake beginners make is believing the BS claims and promises being made by sub-par marketers... leading beginners to believe that internet marketing requires little to no work upfront and will yield you hundreds of dollars per day from some automated software.

Falling prey to these lies causes months, and even years, worth of wasted time searching for something that never existed in the first place, as well as it costing you hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars buying one crappy Clickbank offer after another.

Can you make money online? Absolutely.

Can you make money online while you sleep? Absolutely.

Can you automate it 100%? Absolutely. (Hiring someone else to manage certain aspects of your business is automated.)

Can you make thousands of dollars per day? Absolutely.

Is all of the above possible without any upfront work? HELL no. (Ask me how I know. )

Looks as if nothing has changed since the '90's: same list of mistakes to avoid.

I started back when one could actually speak with Declan Dunn (still miss him), bought his how-to and successfully followed it word for word. I still have the two loaded 3-ring binders. Been in the Warrior forum for yonks, too, but lost my original ID. Can't even remember what it was.

It seems that the only things that are different in this century are the social media outlets and java/aspnet/html coding and of the two, I fear screwing up in the social media part the most.

To me, building web sites is as much fun as playing puzzle games and trouble-shooting. Love it. So the media thing is just one more lesson to learn and problem to solve, and I'm sure I'll find what I need in the forum.

LOL!! I just remembered that some guru dude told me you can't make money in niche markets. Hope he didn't quit his day job.

To whom are you speaking, dear boy? Rather a broad statement with no explanation.

That is a prime example of a HUGE mistake in creating content - never assume your readers have a clue as to what is going on in your mind.

Content must be very clear to the reader regardless of level of education, culture, or native language. You have 2 seconds tops to capture your reader's interest such that they will at least read to your first linked referral to another page on your site or in-text product link, or notice that first real money-making ad in the right hand column and actually click on it.

One need not be particularly well-educated to make money on-line, one only needs to be knowledgeable about something, write good copy about it, know how to manage links and social media, and most of all - be persistent and willing to make mistakes. If the content is compelling enough, readers will even tolerate poor grammar and punctuation and typos.

On or off line, no one is successful without having a sore butt from self-kicking and a flat forehead from banging it on the wall.

Recommended reading for writing excellent copy: How to Win Friends and Influence People plus anything by Hemingway and Louis L'Amour and Edgar Rice Burroughs.

    Hi There...

A lot of people have mentioned some great points and I would have to agree with them, we are going to make mistakes in fact the more we do the best it is...as we are going to learn a lot more! I would say that it's best to learn from others that have been there before you, they have got more experience and know what works and what to avoid! Then it's working on a plan and putting into action over time this will sure build up and you will be learning in the process. As long as you learn from your mistakes that's the main thing, but getting a mentor is one of the best investment you can make..! Wish you all the best..

Lots of great points above. Some good ones that I have made or learned myself.

    Not taking action -

It can be easy to get immersed into researching how to make money online and getting ideas but not doing anything about it. The sooner you try, the sooner you can fail and learn from it. Trust me, you will fail.

    Not investing money -

Most people starting out in IM want to know the best ways to make a ton of money without spending any. If you are not willing to spend money to make money, your success will be hindered. IM is a business and should be treated as such. Lay out your overheads and understand how one investment will affect another. You may end up spending money and losing it out of your naivety, so make your your research is thorough and your investment may not bring immediate results .

    Get rich quick mindset -

People getting started in IM read all about it and read other people success stories. While you can replicate others success, it's not overnight and you can't just perform some action and bank from it the next day. IM is like any other skill you learn in life and the best way to get better is to practice and make mistakes.

    Blackhat tactics -

People read up on BH tactics and think that it will provide them with a quick ticket to the bank. This goes down the the impatience, lack of skill, and sometimes desperation of people. White-hat SEO is the way to build any sustainable business with an internet presence and should be researched and practiced extensively.

    Giving Up -

It took me years to get good at what I do and accumulate my knowledge to do it. I created over ten websites before one of them became successful and each one of them taught me multiple lessons that I can still look back on. Had I given up after a few years of failed websites and countless hours educating myself I would not even be writing this post let alone being able to call myself successful.

Too many people write what they think they should write because other people say they need to think that way. If that makes any sense.

    MY PAST MISTAKES

    1. Not organizing my list, keeping things scattered. This leads to even more work. You need a system, and we all have our own systems. Create your own system and do not copy what works for someone else, keep doing what works for you and take ideas from others.

    2. Blowing money on Ads. Do not do this unless you absolutely know what you are doing. They money will go straight out the window.

    3. Social Media is overrated. Don't count on Social Media to make you huge profits just by Tweeting. You need to build something through hard work, thought, concentration and focus. Mindless promotions don't do anything for profits.

    4. Buying stuff. Be careful what you invest in.

    5. PROCRASTINATION. Putting off what should be done today. Do something every day to grow whatever it is you are trying to grow.
